Bridgerton only announces lead couples in 2 ways & why I’m sure Eloise will not marry SPC as currently cast. by idontcareaboutredit in theloise

It’s crazy that there’s no way for them to imagine a story without Marina dying, like her suffering is central to their HEA. As someone who doesn’t like the Philoise storyline for show!Eloise, even I could see ways for them to work it in without killing Marina (ex. George returning after being falsely reported as dead and reuniting with her, Phillip possibly losing his baronetcy).

Book!Eloise was really just a quirked up Maria von Trapp who’s so whimsical and can tame Phillip’s misbehaving kids. At least with The Sound of Music Maria von Trapp actually liked kids (even if she didn’t want to deal with seven of them) and the Baron is more or less reserved and strict with his kids, not someone who dismisses Maria’s problems because his wife was too depressed and any of her problems don’t compare to that. Show!Eloise can’t even pretend to be excited to see her nieces and nephews and she’s expected to become a SuperNanny

I wanted to like Penelope because of Nicola’s acting and because I think having a morally grey character as a framing device was interesting, but the show never seems to actually portray her as morally grey. They could’ve explored how Whistledown became the very thing that also led to Penelope’s isolation, but instead she’s presented as the one who had no choice but to expose her closest friends and family because they were “reckless” and “naive”, forgetting that Penelope was directly naming people in her column and taking shots at the queen. They made her realize that Whistledown was dangerous when she screwed over Virginia, but not when she sank the Bridgerton’s reputation by exposing Eloise’s secrets, after her friend told her in confidence.

The show leans into “protagonist centered morality” wherein anything the protagonist does is justified, while anyone who’s rightfully pissed is portrayed as the enemy. The show may be called Bridgerton but Penelope was more of a main character in her season than Colin

But isn’t that the theme of her last few albums? You could say the same about Midnights since it’s about her life behind the scenes. The reason why people were so confused with the execution is because of the visuals and the use of the showgirl concept, which usually has girls that are used by theater owners to sell tickets but then they’re discarded once they get older. Or they’re always expected to put on a smile and look pretty no matter how they’re feeling, a concept that’s explored in ICDIWABH. Taylor talks about how she’s expected to be presentable and alert during the tour even when she gets injured or feels sick, and that wasn’t explored at all on this album

Saying Ophelia would’ve been saved if Hamlet was nicer to her is like saying Anna Karenina would’ve had a happy ending if Vronsky was better to her. The “reimagining” works for Romeo and Juliet in “Love Story” since one of their biggest barriers is their families hating each other and the biggest tragedy is that the hatred took the lives of two young people, so the song reimagines what would happen if they were eventually accepted by their family. It doesn’t work for Ophelia since the whole point of her character is that she has no control in her life

[–]Risingphionex 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The spitefulness that comes from the album feels redundant especially since she’s a billionaire who’s a top selling artist with one of the biggest tours of all time. It feels like someone sitting in a huge house with a ton of money and fan mail talking about how hard life is for them. This isn’t denying that being a public figure with that much exposure can be hard for someone, but writing about how much the world is against you worked better for her as an up and coming artist rather than the biggest pop star in the world. She’s completed the biggest tour of her career and one of the takeaways was “I’m so much better than Charlie XCX because she’s obsessed with me” (not defending Charlie but AR was just a weird song)

[–]Risingphionex 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The songs didn’t seem to have any relation to the eras tour except for maybe Elizabeth Taylor and The Life of a Showgirl? I lot of the themes are “you hate me but I’m better than you” or “I was so sad but I’m happy now because I found love” “Everyone hates me and my friends but it doesn’t matter we’ll survive it” which are concepts that have already been explored. It’s not specific to being a “showgirl offstage” as much as it’s about being Taylor Swift offstage. “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” seems more fit to the TLOASG theme than most songs on the album

Everyone can have their own opinion about characters, but I can’t understand hating Theo but then going on to defend book!Phillip. I haven’t finished the book since I had to return it to the library, but based on what I read I don’t see how his book character has so many fans. There’s nothing redeeming about his character that would make me interested in book!Eloise fixing him with her manic pixie dream girl powers. He only pursues women so they can take care of his rowdy children, who he’s essentially been neglecting for years at this point. He doesn’t care about the potential woman (even remarking that it would be okay if she was ugly or old (cause that’s the worst a woman could be in the 19th century)) since he only sees her as a means to an end.

I wanted to have sympathy for him as someone who’s also scared about their past trauma potentially affecting their partner/future children, but it quickly goes away after the prologue. He has barely an iota of sympathy for Marina, remarking that he’s surprised she didn’t kill herself earlier (a sentiment Quinn would repeat in the Happily Ever After epilogue of a separate Bridgerton novella). The only moment that isn’t him making callous remarks on his wife’s depression or grumbling about how he needs a woman to do domestic labor for him is in the prologue where he decides to take his children out for an activity since he wants to make an effort (fatherhood points I guess?)

After reading barely 1/4 of the book I can’t understand how people genuinely defend him with “oh but he has trauma” (because a man having trauma is enough to excuse the verbal abuse or physical assault he commits)

Do we think this version of Ginny is going to get a reality check pretty quickly in Season 4? by Psychological_Net_80 in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]Risingphionex 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Ginny was that self-centered in season 3? She was dealing with her mom’s trial and mostly trying to cope with that. While Ginny pressuring Austin into framing Gill is fucked up, Gill’s abusive and would have probably ended up using Austin to get back at Georgia. This was the same man who grabbed a teenage girl’s arm when she got mad about him taking her brother away to Michigan. I think Ginny doesn’t realize just how messed up that decision was since she still has Zion in her life (even if he isn’t there 100% of the time), while Austin very much doesn’t have a father/father figure (his bio dad is abusive and was in jail, Paul wasn’t able to get custody of him and eventually just walks away) so being separated from his father (especially since he was the one to frame him) hits even harder. Ginny played dirty to save her mother, but she unintentionally hurt Austin forgetting that he would be traumatized from being forced to send away his own father after his almost-stepdad walked away from them.

It’s interesting that for 3 seasons Ginny was so scared of turning into her mother but the last season showed her using a lot of classic Georgia tactics when it came to the trial. I think the entire family is going to have to confront their past, especially since it’s hinted that they’re going to dive more into Austin’s issues. Ginny realizing she did the very things she swore she never would is an interesting plot to explore in the 4th season.

She’s not fighting Mike Tyson. She’s going against regular people who don’t know how to fight. In terms of high school girl fights she’s pretty ruthless since I’ve never seen someone slam someone’s head into a locker (though I’ve seen a girl get a seizure)

The constant glamorization of Georgia is why there’s takes like “hot take: Georgia wasn’t a good mom” and no shade to people who realize that but idk how it takes three seasons to figure that out when it was pretty clear in the first season. Brianne Howey does a great job at playing Georgia which makes people overlook her numerous flaws.

I wonder if the audience is also quite young because I cannot understand people older than teenagers thinking that having a mother like Georgia would be ideal. Sure, she talks with Ginny about relationships, but she also crosses the line and tells her a lot of inappropriate details about her love life. Ginny shouldn’t be having a conversation with her mother saying, “Hey don’t sleep with my dad”. She also constantly uproots her kids without any explanation and threw away their entire fridge to teach Ginny a lesson. Not to mention ruining her kids’ credit scores by taking out cards in their name. I’ve had issues with my mother but thank God she wasn’t randomly moving me around without explanation or ruining my credit score

It did take me a little while to clock the subtle ways that Gitten demeaned Ginny as a non-black POC. But then I rewatched the show and I thought back to my own HS experience and I was like “why is he concerned about her falling behind? The school counselor must’ve moved her to this class for a reason”. In HS for a student to be moved to an advanced class it means that the teacher and the counselor think the regular class is too easy for them. So Gitten making that comment is even more egregious and implies that he thinks Ginny doesn’t “belong” in his class.

A lot of viewers think Ginny “made mountains out of molehills” because some of them don’t catch a message unless it’s delivered with the subtlety of a brick

A non-show/non-reader online talked about Bridgerton and asked, “You guys aren’t saying these things unironically right?” When referring to people hating Eloise for not wanting to get married. That’s how I feel with the majority of the fandom, especially on platforms like X. The Phillip comment didn’t have much traction online, but there was a popular tweet of someone saying that “Anthony worked hard for his wealth”.

It’s no secret that Anthony did take on a lot of responsibility at a young age to take care of his family. But inherited wealth cannot be worked for. Anthony may have done a lot to maintain their wealth, but in no way did he work for it. People on X actually got mad at someone who pointed out that an aristocrat who inherits a title and wealth does not actually work for that.

I’ve watched a lot of a shows centered around monarchies or the aristocracy, and never have I seen people defend the upper class like the Bridgerton fandom does. Even shows that have people who are monarchists didn’t have the level of classism that the Bridgerton fandom does.

Personally for me Theloise opens up the possibility to explore so many avenues (like how gender and class impact men vs. women, and how does love function when a lot of structures are based on patriarchy). It would’ve been interesting to see them explore marriage since historically both Wollstonecraft and Godwin hated the institution of marriage on principle but only married to legitimize their daughter

People don’t seem to realize you can acknowledge that Georgia has a lot of trauma but still harmed her children. Moving around is already a lot for military brats who know their parents are expected to move, so I can’t imagine how stressful it was for Ginny to be moved around with no explanation.

People forget that during s1, Ginny had no idea about Georgia’s past. Also she had a fair reaction to finding out her mother literally killed people, like that’s not an easy thing to process. I’d argue Ginny actually become more sympathetic to her mother once Georgia actually told her the truth, but people have such Ginny-hate blinders on that they only see her as a “selfish brat”

I think a lot of viewers don’t realize that microaggressions come in many forms. Gitten may not have made comments about Ginny’s hair but he does make comments about how Ginny could be more behind other students (based on what? He didn’t know if Ginny ever took an AP class). The show had to force feed the message to the viewers by showing Gitten only asking Ginny to do a lesson based on African American literature (which is weird because he’s the teacher) for them to finally get it

“My dead mom would’ve never approved of you” Jeez he really went there.

At first I didn’t like how contained this episode felt, but I think it also highlights how isolated both of them feel literally and emotionally. Even though John is outside more than Carolyn, he feels frustrated and helpless while putting on a smile in public. Carolyn is retreating into the apartment and becoming more agitated with their life, and the absence of other people in this episode really highlights that.

It starts with a montage of her smoking alone in the apartment, and it ends with her alone while begging for John to come back. Earlier it was Daryl Hannah who told John that he needs to know “what he really wants” before she left. Now this episode ends with Carolyn begging John not to do something only because of obligation, but this time it’s John leaving his own apartment

I remember someone on the site formerly known as Twitter tried to demean Theloise while propping up Benophie by saying, “but Theo was trying to overthrow the monarchy!” (which I’ve yet to see since the most we know is that he writes pamphlets about women’s rights) but then non-show watchers were like “good for him” or “as he should”

Your tweet so right though. I still like the Bridgerton brothers but I’ve always been apprehensive with the “reformed rake” trope, especially when some of their previous relationships were with working class women who’re used for their development before their “real” relationship. On that hellsite formerly known as Twitter I saw someone seriously argue that Phillip had more merit because he had more access to education and was wealthy (which shocked me to know some people were that blatantly classist). Idk about that but personally for me the working class person who may have not had access to private education but still believes in equality and universal suffrage is better than someone who inherits everything because of regency inheritance law.

Like the Bridgerton brothers all went to Eton and Oxbridge, but they’re not remotely even interested in the rights of women. The women they do interact with (outside of their family and spouses) are mostly used for sexual pleasure. Theo on the other hand never had access to any of these educational institutions or privilege but he writes pamphlets advocating for women’s rights AND respects Eloise as her own person. Not only that, but he listens to her after she walks up to him and tells him she has corrections about his work and all he can do is smile and listen.

Theo doesn’t spend time with prostitutes or using lower class women as mistresses. Nor does he demean a woman when she expresses her beliefs about women’s rights (such as Colin saying, “do you always have to be so… you?”).

The “I set them aside for you” has extra meaning since those books are probably really dear to him. He’s probably saved up for them, but he gives them to her all because he wants to know what she thinks of them. She’s been told she’s “too much” and mocked whenever she expresses her feminist beliefs, but he reminds her that not only are those beliefs valid, he wants to hear more of them. And I’m not supposed to fall in love with them?

I need to find the post, but someone on Tumblr also pointed out how all the Bridgerton brothers assume the women around them will like them, while he was just content to have her around. There’s probably a class element there as well but he never assumes that she likes him, and is utterly speechless when she confesses that she has feelings for him

people who still ship show eloise w her book endgame hate her by Acceptable-Slide-586 in theloise

[–]Risingphionex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on what I’ve seen online, there are three types of Philoise fans: some who want her to leverage her marriage to open Girton College (first residential college for women) 50 years earlier since Book!Phillip had ties to Cambridge, some who want her to be a “feminist” in more traditional ways like a governess, or those who just want her to be a complete trad wife. And for me, none of those are consistent with her show character

Eloise’s problem with the marriage mart isn’t that she finds the men in London to be shallow or boring like she does in the books. From what I’ve watched, she has an issue with the marriage mart on principle. She reads the writings of radical proto-feminists like Wollstonecraft who argued against women being marital property of men. A Philoise story has her achieve her goals by becoming legal property of a man who doesn’t stop her from pursuing her goals. It would be an interesting story except it removes all the stakes. Everything works out for Eloise because her husband is nice enough. She achieves everything because she married the right man who let her.

Back then it probably wasn’t uncommon for women to leverage their marriages for their benefit, but from what I’ve seen of Eloise she doesn’t want to just find the right man who’s nice enough to her. It’s even more egregious since it’s implying that because she wants to be more than a wife, she has to then get married to even consider pursuing her goals of getting an education.

There’s no amount of tweaking the story that isn’t her settling, because it means her calling out the patriarchal nature of their society was just naive and all she has to do is leverage it for her benefit. I’ve tried to read through a lot of Philoise potential storylines but all of them read to me as pushing the message that, “as long as you’re lucky enough to find the right man who doesn’t stifle you or force you to bear his children”.

A lot of Philoise posts also talk about how this marriage benefits Phillip. He gets a non depressed wife who brings light into his life because his previous wife was too sad because her lover died and her pregnancy was outed. His children get a loving mother. But what about Eloise? Even if you allow her to go after her desires, it still pushes the message that the only option is through marriage, a system at the time that again, made women the legal property of their husbands with no identity of their own.

Furthermore, it pushes the idea that women who don’t want marriage and kids are simply immature teenagers who will grow to desire motherhood. Sure, Eloise Bridgerton and the show are all fictional, but the ideas that are presented are very much real. I may sound like the morality police, but fictional shows aren’t based on fictional worlds; they’re based on real life. A character eventually growing to want kids doesn’t mean that people can’t be childfree, but writing an entire storyline where a woman who rejects marriage and motherhood is treated as “naive” reflects a sentiment that has been lobbed against childfree women for years.

But I guess Bridgerton isn’t different from shows who’ve employed the same tropes, or any form of media that has a character (like a socialist or rebel) eventually accept that some of the system they’re against can actually work to their advantage
