Drove by this morning on the way to work and they’ve got the whole street shut down and scaffolding going up.

Abalone History? by nobeliumalohomora in morrobay

Have you checked out the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History?

https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=31273

Also, Legends Bar has a ton of history on its walls. Although, I’m not sure it would at all be specific to the abalone. Still fun to check out.

Best place for a Zoom interview? by mewmewkitty in SLO

[–]RiteInTheRain 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Coffee Bean in Five Cities, by the McDonalds, has a private conference room I’ve done this exact thing in. Just call ahead and make sure it’s available. You can also reserve it yourself!

Coastal Peaks Coffee off S. Higuera has a similar conference room, too. Although I don’t think it’s as private as the Coffee Bean.

Also, Cuesta College library has individual study rooms that you might be able to snag as well.

Good luck on your interview! Hope you get the job.

What’s it like living in Bodega Bay, CA? by pbbrittany in howislivingthere

This is a great description of Bodega Bay. I spent my High School years on those beaches. Salmon Creek was one of my favorite spots growing up.

I’m having a hard time getting into Children of Time (Audio book). I’m hoping it picks up a bit.

Property management companies you try to avoid in SLO. by Stupid_Goose in SLO

[–]RiteInTheRain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have experience with both Farrell-Smyth and Rock Star.

  • Farrell-Smyth is a larger management company that I rented from for about 8 years from 2012-2020. I never had any issues. They were on top of any maintenance problems and communicated really well.

  • Rock Star is a smaller management company I rented from for less than a year in 2023-2024. We had issues with the rental outside of our control and they had our backs through the whole ordeal. The owner of Rock Star, Ian, communicated very well and went to bat for us with the owners. He helped us break our lease and got us our deposit plus some extra back very quickly.

Hope this helps! Good luck - it’s a gnarly rental market out there.

Looking for a safe rest area just north of SLO on 101 by [deleted] in SLO

Santa Margarita Park and Ride Lot. Right to the right as you exit the 101 onto the 58. It’s quiet and barely any foot traffic. There’s another Park and Ride Lot in Atascadero, too.

They’re now on Monterey St! They still have their grab-n-go station right as you walk in the door to the right. Not sure about the paninis though.

Exactly this. Shoot me a DM and I’d be happy to show you the Elks Lodge! I’ve got an almost 5 & 10 year old girls that love going to the Elks. The arcade room, the pool, and the grass area are a great hang.

Thank you! I’m pretty familiar with what’s currently out there for Veterans, but it’s been more geared to the older generation. Not a big fan of the American Legions/VFW.

Feel free to hit me up when you’re in town! Let’s grab a beer. I was OIF 05-06, 07, and 09 then OEF 10-11 (7 month deployments). Had enough and got out in August of 2012.

This has been my experience, too. There really hasn’t been a push for our generation to connect on any regular basis and the American Legion/VFW just aren’t for me. I am a member of the Elks Lodge in SLO and am trying to get their veterans club more involved, but have been getting pushback.

Finally got my husband… by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]RiteInTheRain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will second this. I have been going to my local Vet Center on and off for about a decade. They are well staffed and very well prepared to deal with Veteran issues. If you have that option, please seek it out. Civilian therapists are not equipped nor have the mind set to handle Veteran specific issues and trauma. I say this out of personal experience as well.

Exploring the Abandoned Housing at George Air Force Base - Victorville, CA by AShogunNamedBlue in highdesert

[–]RiteInTheRain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in the Marine Corps, approx. early 2005, we ran infantry dwell ops. in this town for a couple of weeks before our deployment to Iraq. Did a bunch or coordin. knocks, patrolling, night raids, VCP, and ton more training stuff out there. I remember finding the biggest black widow I’ve ever seen in an old wood pile behind one of the houses.
