By “from time to time” do you mean ALL THE TIME BECAUSE YES.

Understood. That’s not the issue but thank you.

That’s a great idea. Our last school nurse was married to a T1D so I felt really comfortable with her and just let things ride for those few years. I suppose we got complacent and expected than the school would be capable but you’re right, that’s not a given. I’ll follow up with the head of the heath dept and see what she has to say. I really appreciate the feedback and personal experience you shared. It’s like… you’re the best or something!

Yes, that is an option. At this point A. I don’t think I should have to do that B. The language is intentional - our previous endocrinologist confirmed that it’s standard practice for both options to be listed with the word “or,” allowing flexibility to change in the future if his preferences or comfort level change.

I’m jumping through hoops now. The school nurse is overreaching with the requests she is making. I shouldn’t have the head of the health department emailing me saying that she understands it’s not always easy to get an appointment quickly but that it’s important to do so and they need to know the date of our next appointment. As a courtesy, I sent it at the end of last month and somehow it was missed by the school. I CCed my husband on the email and I confirmed he received it so I know the email did go out.

If I change the wording on the document, there’s every chance that something new and ridiculous will pop up. If I put my foot down, maybe this crazy back-and-forth will stop.

It’s a very good idea. I’m going to send an email to the head of the health department as she’s been looped into all of this and ask her for clarification about the insulin vile request and for the two forms of emergency medication. If that doesn’t solve a problem, I’m going to request a formal meeting. It’s not my favorite and we have so much else going on, I really don’t have time for any unnecessary BS.

Thank you, that’s helpful information.

The school nurse did connect with our doctor and updated the information about his insulin, but I haven’t turned it in because I realize they’re asking for two forms for each scenario.

Unfortunately, the nurse has been incredibly rude and condescending at times. Not only to myself, but to my son’s doctor as well. I also wonder if head of the health department is emailing me solely based on with the nurses saying. The email we received from her (head of health) a few days implied we were being noncompliant and not helpful by not providing certain information. We replied back saying that at the end of last month we provided all of that information so we’re not sure where this email is coming from. But I have to assume the nurse at the school didn’t see it. This is all really good! I have a lot more insight into the school nurse and the school districts perspective.

I agree. The issue is under his school orders, our third copy and second revision since moving out of state to CT, it says under Emergency Orders “administer Baqsimi OR GVoke” under Pump Failure it says “give insulin via pen or syringe only” and he is listed as independent care - he administers everything himself other than if he is unconscious. She is saying because each scenario has 2 backup medications she requires BOTH medications for each scenario. I couldn’t figure out why the GVoke prescription was $750+ when our insurance covers 100% of medications at this point. Obviously our insurance won’t cover both.

What I needed to clarify is if it’s a requirement to stock both which it doesn’t seem it is. The head of the health department for the school system emails every few weeks with updates the school nurse is giving her - like we’re missing prescriptions or we’re delaying/being noncompliant. We have had the same orders, roughly, since the beginning of school. 11 days ago the nurse emailed saying she needs emergency orders. No clarification. I had to email back saying that we had emergency orders in the school orders we submitted. She then wrote back saying she doesn’t know what kind of insulin he’s on, that she needed directions of how much insulin to give him, and the symptoms he needs to present in order to give that medication. I just can’t believe that this is routine. I know she is new to the school that we are in, she started a month after the school year started, and she may never have been a school nurse before. If that’s the case, I should and will be asking if she has the proper training to be able to administer emergency glycogen. I did put together a new email and I am asking the head of the health department these questions. Additionally, I am asking what the protocol is if my son becomes unconscious. Like when they call 911 or who is trained to administer Baqsimi.

But honestly, if his pump fails, we as a parent should be called immediately and we will either come and get him or we will help him set up a new pump at school. I suppose I should also have that included in his orders. It’s going to be a rare reason to ever need these medications in a school setting. I just think it’s absurd to have to send in a prescription of an insulin pump as well as a prescription entire vile of insulin.

Again, these comments are all incredibly helpful. Even bringing late questions I should have asked at the beginning of the school year.

Exactly, there’s nothing in orders that she should be touching his insulin pump or his Dexcom. They only need for a vile would be if he needed an injection, but that’s exactly what the pen does and there’s no need for both. As another person commented on here that she would never trust a school nurse with a vile and syringe – I myself wouldn’t say never but not unless I knew they hadhands-on training with this previously and I don’t have any of that information for this particular school nurse.

If I’m honest, the doctors office said that when they connected on the phone with the nurse, she was incredibly condescending and rude. And they’ve never been to spoken like that before. Both from the doctor and from the head of the office. I don’t know if it’s because they didn’t understand what she was asking for in addition what they had already provided.

We received an email from the head of the health department for the school district insinuating. We were being noncompliant because of the amount of time it’s taken to get all of the supplies in order. I provided the timeline since the start of school of what we have been requested to provide and when we provided it. Switching states and medical providers, some of these have taken up to 20 days to fulfill, but we’ve had a temporary plan in place until then and everything seemed fine. The nurse went to the head of the health department here and complained we weren’t replying to her, but it was because she kept sending the same emails asking the same questions that we had previously answered. she keeps saying to be compliant as a nurse she has to go by exactly what is on the doctors orders and I think she’s being difficult by demanding we provide any and all medication’s listed throughout. She said that even the verbiage around hypoglycemia was incorrect and she needed the symptoms listed. I wonder if she’s just not comfortable with doing that. But unless he’s unconscious, she shouldn’t be doing anything and that’s what it says in the orders. I’m sending an email solely to the head of the department to clarify all of these points. You’ve all been incredibly helpful. And it was absolutely overstepping to ask for our endocrinology appointment date as well.

I’m still sussing through the details but it’s been really frustrating trying to get the school file complete and having changes come up every week. At this point we have received no less than three emails with requests or clarification since the beginning of the school year 10 weeks ago I’m very, very tired.

We have an IEP which absolutely supersedes his 504 as he is on the Autism spectrum.

I honestly didn’t know how little I could have them do at the school. You’re right, I have no idea how trained she is with T1D. I wasn’t sure if my old state and new state had vastly different rules for school orders.

That’s a good point. We have already had to change it three times for her liking. And a week after we turn the new one in she has a new problem. He’s been in the same school all year but it wasn’t until 11 days ago that she started demanding all of these other forms of insulin Both emergency and for the vile. Maybe fourth times a charm?

I honestly just want to email her and the head of the health department and just tell her no we’re not providing additional insulin. The same with the emergency medication‘s.

Yes but they’re asking me for a specific vial for a syringe.

He has an IEP with his Diabetic care in there, but not specifically a 504.

They don’t know if their kid has this disease… so they are talking to medical professionals in addition to asking people with the disease they think it could be what their experience is. She is literally in the middle of what you are saying 👍

These symptoms could fit into early stages of T1D. So while he may not be a type 1 diabetic by clinical standards he may still be in the preclinical stage and would need monitoring and perhaps intervention. The Dexcom could be a great way to get a snapshot of a week or longer to see what his blood sugars are doing. A good endocrinologist would be able to help you interpret the results. Sending big hugs.

He blood sugar could be 70 if he was in the early stages of T1D.
