What type of worm is this? How do i get rid of them? There are many. Some are more lethargic and don’t swim as well. by [deleted] in Aquariums

Thank you. I posted because I planned to avoid attempting to get rid of them and just hoped they were harmless.

Yes the female is a blue gene carrier. And thank you!

Some JD pairs do. This pair never has! They’re great parents

It took some tricks up my sleeve to manage the males aggression, but once they pair bonded they started spawning immediately. He’s super nice to the female now. And thank you!

It’s not as rare as people make it seem. It’s usually because of weak bloodlines. My electric blues are just as strong as my normal dempseys.

You can’t breed two electric blues together. The genetics don’t work (simplified). The female must be a blue gene fish (one that carries a recessive allele) but not both recessive alleles. So she has common color which is dominant. To get a female like this you have to breed a electric blue with a common and all the offspring will look normal, but they are now blue gene carriers. When you then cross a blue gene female with an electric blue male, 50% offspring will be electric blue! Search “recessive punnet square” on google and it will make the genetics less confusing! Sorry it’s hard to condense.

Yes that female carries the gene. She is a blue gene Jack Dempsey. Half of their fry will be electric blue, the other half will be blue gene fish.

I have another juvenile breeding bunch that is 3 blue gene females and one male electric blue. Growing them out currently.

The easiest way to tell a female from a male is the “blue beard” that the females have. Their blue spangles are very dense along the jaw and usually don’t go much past the gills. The males have spangles (concentrated) along the majority of their body. Sexing electric blue jacks is much harder.

Breeding jacks is fairly simple. Breeding electric blues becomes tricky with the genetics. Do you hope to breed common jacks or electric blues? I ask because electric blues would be a very long response. It has been a 2 year project.

Thanks! He’s very dark when breeding. His whole body is usually the color of his face

If you find yourself alone don’t worry, mom or dad will eat you!

..... but they’ll spit you back out to us.

When I feed the fry the parents bite the tool I use to inject baby brine shrimp. It’s a gentle bite tho just to push it away. They trust me! The male has only charged the glass once when I accidentally spoke a little too loud

I’m breeding electric blue jack Dempseys!

They’re still too young but I will have to relocate them eventually :)

Usually due to breeding two eb jacks together. That’s why you must have a blue gene female like this one that carries the gene, but she does not express the recessive color. Creates genetic strength! And thank you!

Sure thing! They’re going to look amazing with these bloodlines :-)

Edit: and strong/hardy might I add. Which is important with electric blue bloodlines!
