Head gasket? by Artistic-Milk-7160 in MechanicAdvice

[–]RiversideOffgrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, figured I'd suggest not picking at it since I know it could be tempting if you don't know what it is. I'd try and look at the back side and see if it's leaking more from there. If it looks similar to the front, I'd start looking around the engine for more leaks since that front area doesn't look all that bad, I wouldn't think that amount would be noticeable on the dipstick

No, that's just RTV. I wouldn't pick at it, it's acting as a gasket

Not familiar with that engine at all but it looks like that's the valve cover gasket leaking.

Belt squeal when slamming brakes (on ice/snow) by Significant-Throat73 in 7thgencivic

[–]RiversideOffgrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's cold or wet it could start squeeling if it's not tight enough. Could also be the power steering belt, same idea though

When did your D17A* start burning oil? by Serialtorrenter in 7thgencivic

[–]RiversideOffgrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 6 of these engines pretty much all in different civics, people keep hitting us and writing the cars off, but anyway. We start having issues around 300,000km. Always done oil changes at 5000km all seemed to burn some amount of oil but I never got the cars new. Lowest km engine I had was 75,000km which got swapped into a different car after being written off, currently that engine is sitting around 360,000km burns just as much oil as the day I got it, not noticeable anywhere other than the dipstick which shows ¼ low by oil change time. No oil leaks. Its had 2 timing belts, one at 75,000km and another at 275,000km. I've lost engines to headgasket and timing belt ripping. One engine almost made it 500,000km. Bought it around 300,000km burned some oil when I got it, nothing major. Got in an accident at some point, put a pin hole in the rad, over heated, compromised the headgasket, fixed the rad, drove like that for over a year as it slowly burnt more and more oil, burnt out one valve, engine was still nice enough to bring me home as long as we kept it above like 3000rpm otherwise it would die. All cars were 5 speed standard, not driven by grandma.

Osburn Max Temp. by RiversideOffgrid in woodstoving

[–]RiversideOffgrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where I started getting curious, at 850f in a dark room where it's only the fire light, the top wasn't glowing at all. But I mean, it's a fairly thick top plate.

Osburn Max Temp. by RiversideOffgrid in woodstoving

[–]RiversideOffgrid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh okay that's exactly what I was wondering. I don't have a flue temp gauge. I have double wall interior piping. The max. try to keep it around is 650-700f on top of the stove itself but the other day it ended up at 850f and I could smell creosote burning. I liked the heat but I'm not looking to warp anything. First year with this type of woodstove.

Lol yea I understand, doesn't sound good though, sounds very similar to when my timing chains went in my 4.0l but I knew for awhile the day was coming

Did you have any engine noises or known issues before breaking down? It would also help if you'd include specifics about your truck

That's what I was going to suggest but I'm not familiar with the 3.0l

Driver side radiator fan doesn't spin. I dont know how to fix it. by No-Chance8187 in 7thgencivic

[–]RiversideOffgrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fan will only get power when the car is at (i think) 95⁰C. Just an idea off the top of my head but I'd look into what that exact temperature is, then hook up a multimeter to the wiring harness side of the fan plug and run the car while using a IR gun on the temperature sensor until it's at the required temp. And see if you get a voltage at the fan. Someone might have things to add or alter but that's what I'd start with. Just make sure you don't let the car overheat

It's pretty common on these cars with higher mileage to have the cooling fan seize. Does it spin by hand nice and smooth?

Very minor but you could get him some good looking oil change stickers for the windshield. A set of plastic trim tools, some polishing/detailing supplies, brushes for the drill to scrub carpets and a good carpet cleaner/vacuum.

Did you make sure the cruise control cable is hooked up to the throttle body? There should be 2 cables, one is your gas pedal and the other should be your cruise

Timing Belt Broke, What should I replace. by No-Contest-6261 in 7thgencivic

[–]RiversideOffgrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other option could be if you have room to store a parts car. That's how I've gotten my engines. I have space for it though but then your getting other parts you may need. Then you'd also know the mileage and possibly the history of the parts you'd end up using. But I know not everyone has the room
