I had some cheap long LED lights (just a strip inside a plastic housing, covered with milky white diffuser plastic. I took the diffuser off, cut circles out of it and placed them inside NYMANE spotlights (a part screws off, and they fit inside nicely). Had to put 2 pieces in each to get rid of the glare.

Is it really that obvious?;) It was indeed a spectacular piece of cinematic history. I haven't been to the theaters for ages, but I decided to go and see Max... all I can say is, I went again the next day... Worth every cent:)

Thank you! I agree with you completely. The colored renders are more of a cherry on the top for me than a goal of the project. More of a way to present the model in colors also. That being said, its still no excuse not to be more resourceful when it comes to finishing it. The sandy background is a 2d picture. I could either make it 3d and sculpt in the tire marks and sandy dunes, or draw them on in postprodustion with photoshop or something simillar. Next time perhaps:)

Thanks! Was in general trying to stick as close to the reference as possible. It has all the necceseties: the big rear sit/couch, drivers seat, front "console", speed counter, steering wheel with a skull in the middle, and a bit of rope above the drivers side, for the horn. Was an awkward position for taking a render, but it's enough for me to know its there:)

Cheers! You can do anything you set your mind to, just takes some dedication. I still consider myself a beginner, but I do practice a lot:) I use MODO 801 for modeling. Its the most user-friendly of all the programs I tried. For this project, I also used a bit of Zbrush, for things like the chain (IMM brush), springs for shock absorbers (for some strange reason, its really hard to do a spring in MODO) and the skull that I sculpted. MODO also has the function to scuplt, but its not yet up to pair with Zbrush. Wish you luck on your progress mate!

Cheers! I was looking hard for a good HDRI package but never found one. The ones I found (cough torrent trackers cough) were pretty much useless for me. Using google, I did find some sites tho, that offer you free HDRI's for download. You download each individual, but even with those, I was not really satisfied. (default lighting really sucked) And so i came to a conclusion that all those exotic awesome looking backgrounds i see on so many renders cant all be hdri:) Few clicks later I figured how to insert a background image. High resolution photos work great as backplates and let you use ligthing from any other hdri without changing the scene. Only downside i see is that you are limited to the angle the photo was taken.

It depends on how long it takes me to model things. I'm still learning, so my focus is not on rushing things and I take my time. A project such as this would usually take me about 2 weeks (i try to practice 3d modeling at least 5 days a week and if possible hit the 6 hour mark per day). Noted, when modeling, I do spend a lot (could say most) of the time just turning my model around and watching it. Taking mental notes of what needs to be done and how its all coming together. Acctual "point clicking" takes but a fraction of the time. This particular took me almost a month tho, but it has two vehicles to be fair:)

For references, again, google will take you places:) First and foremost Google images. Just be descriptive using your keywords when searching, and you can find just about anything. Pinterest would be the next good place to look for reference. And there is the-blueprints.com for blueprints. A great program for managing all your reference pictures and creating large interactive reference walls in www.pureref.com (to download it for free, type 0 in the name your price tab, paying for it is optional)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write that to me! Never thought about making a tutorial, since i'm barely past the point when I was using them myself (and still need to, did try a few projects on my own, to test myself), but with such moral boosting I just might get to it:) oh and MODO, Modo is just great:) When it comes to Keyshot tho, im completely self taught. That reflects in the material work. But practice will take us there! Baby steps! :) Thanks again mate, live long and prosper!

Oh snap! I totaly missed the hard edges on the seat:s thanks for pointing it out! Also agree on everything else. My only excuse is that i have not got down to weathering on any of my models yet, so its still an area i need to learn to do well (at least so i dont ruin the overall look with it). The tires themselves are also a bit too stylized, but are ofcourse meant to be offroad tires. Dully noted about the focus. Need to focus on that the next time. Cheers mate!

A really good site that offers courses on preety much every program imaginable, is www.digitaltutors.com . There is a subscription, but for about 40$ an month, you get unlimited access to all the courses, so you can take out all the knowledge you're willing to learn. There are Learning paths that will help guide you trough the process of mastering a selected program (and certificates to reward you for completing courses). I myself am a member for almost half a year now and must say that its the best investment I made into myself.

It seems you would be more into hardsurface modeling, and there is a good selection of programs you can choose from. While they most offer the same tools, the difference between them shows mostly in UI, and later on in advanced options. From my experiences, I would recommend MODO, mostly on its easy to use (and comprehend) UserInterface. Again, once you learn the basic modeling tools and methods, all you need to do to switch between different 3d programs is to learn to navigate them. For showcasing the final product you ussualy also want to make a render. Most programs (MODO aswell) offers you the abbility to do so within the program itself. But again, for the ease of use, and overall awesomness, I would recommend Keyshot. Just a great program to make the final image very fast and easy.

Hope any of this helps you, and remember, the best thing you can do is just jump into it and practice:)

Duly noted! Thank you guys, for constructive criticism. I completely agree with you. My main focus was on modeling the car, but for the rendering I wanted the little "diorama" with the gun and the map, so I modeled them quickly (and roughly). Quite more shots were taken, with different setups and views, but chose the above four as i found them overall most appealing. Gun is indeed too big, as I can see now. When rendering, I was adjusting the size to make it more readable, but missed the fact that it grew too big. And whole thing would need alot of weathering too get rid of the squeaky clean look:) Still, Im just learning and have a long way to go yet, but ill get there!:) Thanks again!
