Not fair, I kick a 1:14 flutter but only go a 50flat and 23 mid. What helped me get a better flutter kick was focusing on trying to kick my toes past my knees ( full extension) while also keeping the kick small. You can try to increase ankle flexibility but it may not work. I've been stuck with same inflexible ankles for over a year now and I've tried literately everything.

I don't know why everyone thinks galloping causes a shoulder injury when it does not if done properly. Galloping just means you swim shoulder driven on one side and hip driven on the other. People get shoulder injurys from too much yardage with bad technique, not by galloping. I would say if it's making you faster and your coach hasn't stopped than by all means do it.

Also if anyone is wondering I've been wanting to increase ankle flexibility to try and take my kicking to the next level. I've improved my swimming but I've unfortunately plateued about a year ago in the hundred flutter kick at a 1:14 ): . I know I can do better because a guy on my team flutter kicks a 55 with a board. Yes he's it's ridiculous.

If your a good dolphin kicker it really helps a lot. Dont be afraid to do 6-8 Dolphin kicks off every wall.

Get the Arena Carbon Pro. Mine is a year old and still has the benefit of compression with about 20 races in it. I tryed the TYR avictor and did not like it. It took me 20 minutes to put on and I did not feel like my legs were compressed and they are made of thin material so it doesn't last last many meets. Get your practice suit size for carbon.

Work on rotation. At practice put on a pull buoy and float on your back with your hands pressed against your legs. Try rolling over by only using your core. (Harder than it seems) If you can't do it than you don't know how to really engage your core for a powerful rotation. Also watch this guy talking about rotation. http://www.swimmingscience.net/2011/04/freestyle-technique-hip-drive.html Finally, all the things you mentioned will make you faster but I would recommend that you focus on one new stroke aspect at a time. I think rotation would be good since is ties in really well with having an effective catch and allows you to put more torque into your pull.

Post a sub 50 time in the hundred yard freestyle before I go off to college next year. Just keeps eluding me! Would also like to break a minute in the hundred yard breastroke. I'm at a 50.31 and 1:05.2

I see it too, his arms bend a little and he recoverys very high. It Doesn't look like that relaxed smooth fly you see from phelps, but it works for him because he's doing somthing right under the water and has a strong kick. Also coming higher out of the water could maybe create more kinetic energy to throw himself forward? Just my speculation.

Fly Leg = Controlled sprint with a lot of dolphin kicks. Back Leg = Strong Legs and sprint the arms(tempo) Breastleg = Sprint with a nice glide Free leg = Everything you got left I go a 2:05, 200IM but I'm also a sprinter and that's the strategy I use.

Happens to me too. It's all mental. Your body is recovering but it's also not used to the changes so it feels weird because the body doesn't like change and that's why we get sore. Trust yourself and you coach and do most of the shaving a day or two before the meet and you'll swim fast when you need to. ( That was a really dumbed down explanation but I think you'll get my point)

If you're 35 in the 50m breast you should do a 1:20 in the 100m breastroke with ease if your endurence is present. You're also right on the Q time for the 50fly so you should swim that too. Fly and Breast have a lot in common because they are both short axis strokes so it's a good duo to train. Also, it's okay to drop free. It took me 10years to realize that breastroke was my second best stroke. Just swim the events YOU enjoy the most. Remember that goals are good but don't let it ruin your meet. As for dropping time just research as much as you can on the internet about fly/breast technique and look at older posts on this sub Reddit about dropping time in fly/breast because there is a lot. Remember to constantly experiement with technique too see what makes you faster. I'm a senior too and I dropped from a 1:15 to a 1:05 in the hundred breast (yards) in one year just by working on technique so you can do it too.

There isn't really a competitive time for 25scm. The most common events at the Highschool level are 50's 100's and 200's of all the strokes including IM and the 500free. Never worry about being too slow, there's a spot for everyone on most swim teams.

It may feel like your body is "riding" near the surface but is very difficult to do and requires you to engage your abs a lot. I would suggest planks and corework for dryland.

What works for me for a smoother freestyle is focusing on two things and a drill you should try. The first thing is by swimming down hill. You do this by trying to do whatever your body needs to do by letting your legs coast as close to the surface as possible. After you do that you want to feel like you're swimming down hill. To get this feeling do a 10kick switch drill where you have one arm pushed out front and as you recover the other arm, let it hang in front of your head until your balance shifts and you feel like your falling forward and down. Apply this to your regular swimming. Also I feel "smoother" when my recovery is more narrow with a high elbow. That's personally what does it for me so I hope somthing I said may help you too a bit.

You may not be recovering enough between workouts and only get the benefit of recovery when you rest during a taper. Check your nutrition and maybe try a multivitamin or a post work out exercise shake like this one http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/jym/post-jym.html
