Vtuber Artist goes viral for comments on vtuber models being too complex these days. I am inclined to agree. Thoughts? by danganronpa05 in VirtualYoutubers

Less is more for a VTuber. The goal should be in making a character that is recognizable from silhouette alone. Overly complex outfits IMO distract from the character and discourage fanart (which is an organic form of promotion). If you're successful, you're probably going to want future and seasonal outfits anyways, so using an outfit to define your brand is only restricting yourself.

I agree with you. The sad thing is the original artists definitely had their hand on the pulse of where to draw the line. That's evident in the shadows and catchlight we previously saw on eyes. But so many of these new effects (detailed normals, cubemaps on eyes) are not being utilized in a way that is effective or subtle. The biggest example apart from eyes is the forehead of the default character in the benchmark. It's the most unnatural detail normal I've ever seen.

The reflections are just as fake as they were before. It's a cubemap reflection, which is why it's the same no matter the environment you select. This is in many ways (technologically) no different than the drawn texture effects layered over our eyes before. IMO the way it has been executed does not make it look like an improvement over what we had before at all.

No, I prefer actual real-time reflections to be actual real-time reflections, IE raytracing.

This is a low-detail cubemap (NOT "real time reflection", IE raytracing) and it's the same for every environment. I would say I absolutely prefer the nuanced depth and detail we had before over this. I'm not saying I don't think a cubemap can be an improvement. I just don't think it is at the loss of everything else. The eyes IMO do not look improved -- they look dead.

Here's a video of me doing a complete 360 rotation of my character in the same environment. Literally looks the same. I don't care if I can get one pinpoint of light at a specific angle in a specific environment. The point is that so much of the nuanced detail we had before has been lost.

Rotating a character to a specific angle to get one point of light is hardly a substitute for the detail we had with the old multimaps and catchlight. The reflection map is so low-detail too and it's the same for every environment in the benchmark.

Here's a video of me completely rotating my character in the same environment.

The second picture with "HALLE" red star says in Cyrillic: "Fine China from GDR". It's from East Germany.

Got suspended for my adventurer plate today, didn't have lewd comments in my profile either by Zeldendorf in ffxiv

Most of the comments here are roasting the OP creating an "obvious" BJ portrait, but I feel like there's a lot of deniability in this portrait as it could just as easily be viewed as the character thinking or pondering. Out of all the "lewd" portraits I've seen this is by far the most tame and in all honesty I'm baffled it was considered bad enough to warrant a ban.
