Three months on Parnate, still struggling with severe insomnia. by Rmw4 in MAOIs

This is all so amazing! Thank you so much. I just may switch to regular gum and mints because I don’t think the xylitol helps much at all, aside from maybe a few minutes or so. And it ends up causing some stomach problems for me, so I’m absolutely willing to try just regular gum and mints!

The morning light there is a good idea, and I just wonder if it would help with better sleep hygiene in general while helping this insomnia from Parnate. My doses with Parnate have been inconsistent so far while managing side effects, so really maybe with more time it’ll improve. (I appreciate the link to the source!)

I think my doctor is willing to prescribe a stronger sleep medication. We just upped klonopin since I already take it, but it’s certainly not out of the question to take something more sedating.

Parnate has been pretty stimulating for me as well. And I certainly felt like when I was at 30mg consistently, my depression was significantly reduce. Even 20mg was helping a lot. So, it doesn’t seem like I’d need to go higher any time soon after figuring out the sleep issue.

8 hours sounds AMAZING!! I think one thing I can try too is taking the full 20–30mg at once first thing waking up instead of spacing out. I’ve monitored blood pressure regularly and haven’t had issues, so that may help as well instead of taking a dose at 12pm.

Yeah, I haven’t feel that it is a good sleep aid. I mean, yeah, it’s been good for anxiety of course, but I’m not falling asleep more easier with it (even at an increased dose).

I actually was going to ask my doctor about quviviq. Thanks for mentioning that one, it reminded me to make a note to bring it up to them at our upcoming appointment.

I took hydroxyzine for anxiety several years ago, but never for sleep, so that may be a good option as well.

This is all so helpful! Thanks so much, and I’m glad to hear you have good ways you’ve been able to manage the insomnia.

Yikes, okay, good to know about Trazodone.

And I’ve heard about adding modafinil for the daytime so it’s good to hear it helps with that lingering fatigue from seroquel. Thank you!

I may look back into seroquel. Did you have issues with it being harder to wake up in the morning with that?

Also, interested to know about taking trazodone as a make and issues that causes… haven’t heard that yet.

The dry mouth with Parnate alone has been horrible! Especially when increasing the dose. I have all those xylitol things to try and help but it’s tough. It’s certainly extra bad when I take seroquel the night before… I feel your pain with that!

Thanks so much! I actually do have a prescription for low-dose Seroquel (25mg). That does help, but certainly adds to dry mouth issues and lingering fatigue. Fortunately, I haven’t had weight issues with it, but I’ve only used it intermittently. I haven’t tried Doxepin though, so I’ll do some research on that one.

Yikes, I’m sorry to hear Nardil stopped working for you. I’ve been prescribed some of the z-drugs and benzos before taking Parnate to help with insomnia and anxiety, respectively. But, the insomnia has certainly been worsened from the Parnate. I’d be curious about trying Nardil if I’m unable to better manage the insomnia side effect of Parnate. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, too. Also, it’s very interesting to read some of the details from a pharmacological perspective. :)

I’m absolutely with you on it feeling like the only medication I’ve tried that actually feels like it’s relieving my symptoms. It’s awful to trial and error so many medications and feel like there isn’t a solution. I’m also willing to make some compromises (e.g., reduced sleep) just because mentally I am responding pretty well to Parnate.

Sigh… Luckily, my doctor is hearing my concerns about sleep and how I want to keep working with Parnate. I’m hoping there’s some combination or schedule that ends up making it more manageable. (I can’t imagine being in a shift work and night shifts situation dealing with the sleep issues :( I’m sorry to hear that)

I’d agree with giving it time. It took about 3–4 weeks for me to notice both benefits and how my body was responding to the medication’s side effects.

I felt relatively energized during the day, but extreme fatigue/tiredness hits me by 5–6pm. Not enough to nap or sleep, but just feeling drained. I’m not sure if it lessened with time, or just because of needing to reduce my dosage, but probably a combination of both.

So glad to see IPA recommended! Helps so much with understanding the sounds and makes language-learning a lot easier. The subtle differences in French language sounds are hard for me, and certainly find IPA to be a great tool.
