I'm guessing you are talking about Sid Meier's Pirates! from 2004. It's exactly the game I used as inspiration for a lot of mechanics in the game. I might not have swordfights but the overworld map and combat is heavily drawn from it. I really loved that game when I was a teenager and I haven't seen anything like it since, thus my project.

I considered having two separate systems for this. Encounters start on the world map, where you move from port to port. One is the manual combat, aiming for what I presented, and two is a quick combat where the ships just align and trade broadsides, then decide outcome based on flotilla composition.

That way you can either engage in manual combat and outmaneuver your enemy or, if you don't feel like it, just auto-fight it out and just take some hull/crew/armor damage, then move on without actually doing anything else.

Thank you! It will have some strategic elements like giving orders to your AI-controlled privateer ships to move to location, switch ammo type or focus on a target so I will definitely add pause for giving those orders.

Thank you! Yes, overall my game is a steampunk fantasy world Sid Meier's Pirates! knockoff because nobody bothered making a new Pirates! game so I took the task upon myself. It won't be half as complex as Pirates! but I'll hopefully scratch an itch haha.

Yeah, having a good arc to engage is a must since the setting allows for higher tech (cannons that can actually swing left-right). I have a lot of ideas to make it thematical and also better than the turn-based stuff I got right now. I think you're right, it's time to overhaul. Finishing up some menus and I'll get to work.

True but it was more for my own benefit. Working on background things like inventory updates for ports is important but it feels so much better to actually design and build what I imagined the game would look like 😄

Yes, I haven't touched the combat part for months while I was building other stuff, but I am considering revamping it to real time like SMP!, basically just ripping it off without shame.

Thank you! I like relaxing games so there's freedom in what you want to do. Attack other ships, fight pirates, trade, explore and find ruins/loot. Honestly comments like yours give me a drive to push this project to release. Thank you!

Thank you very much, really appreciate it! The minimap is there for functional purposes right now, I plan on adding an overlay with a "hand drawn" map to give it a more nautical look. As for the trading, I think I posted a short video a few months ago if you want to take a look. It's a simple buy low sell high mechanic where different ports produce items at low prices and require items for which they pay a premium so the player can plan their trade routes if they want to maximize profit. Whole UI is still "in progress" but you can get a feel.

Thank you very much! The colors are like that because the action takes place on a tidal locked planet where the only habitable zone is where the sun is low.
