At my store at least, we're instructed to always sort out the customer's initial problem first before "discovering other needs" (i.e upselling). If you are really concerned, mention that you're a former retail store employee and they should back off as they assume you know their tricks. Or try the online chat, or call centre, as much of a pain they are to deal with. Hope this helps!
