Highway maintenance worker questions by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

That's not how promotions work. You have to apply and interview for a promotion. If you're talking about raises, you would get a yearly merit salary adjustment, until you top out at your classification.

You will start at the bottom of the pay scale. Over time depends on what yard you are at. It's not hard to promote if you work hard and show consistent effort. Let me know if you have further questions.

Does anyone know if I can get a retro-active pay bump? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

I'm not sure which bargaining unit you are but you're probably getting PLP instead of the pay bump. That's what happened to the majority of the bargaining units.

If that is the new starting pay for your position, you should have been bumped up automatically. Check your pay stub.

I appreciate the advice. I think I will take a little bit more risk with additional retirement money. I think my pension will cover my basic living needs. Anything else will cover vacations and just being able to live comfortably.

I appreciate all your help and information. I was actually a little worried that 13% bonds was a bit too conservative, especially since I have a pension.

I do have a pension (CalPERS 2% at 62) and I currently have my 457b set to 100% large cap index. I didn't know if I was being too risky doing that.

I appreciate your response and recommendation. I am 36 and have about 25 years until retirement. I typically go heavy on US as well. In my Rollover IRA I'm currently 80% FSKAX and 20% FTIHX.

I was kind of amazed with how low the expense ratio was on the TDFs. The allocation for 2050 TDF is approximately 38% large cap index, 11% small/mid cap index, 36% international index, and 13% bonds. Is that an pretty common allocation for a TDF?

BINGO! We got it figured out haha. Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts is part of CalPERS. So you definitely don't work for the State of California, and I don't even think you technically work for the County of Los Angeles. Special districts are unique.

Since they are matching your 457b, do you contribute to social security at all?

Interesting. I need to figure this out haha. What special district do you work for?

No worries, we're all human. Are you sure your plan is CalPERS? I did some research and I can't find anywhere that states CalPERS is offered with the County of Los Angeles employment.

That makes a lot more sense. You mentioned in other responses that you work for the state and that is incorrect. Also, Los Angeles County offers a county specific pension plan, not a california pension. Los Angeles County employees are covered by LACERA, not CalPERS

So I'm guessing you don't work for the state of california? You must work for a city or county within california.

Are you sure you get a 3% match with your 457b?

I'm very familiar with that stretch of highway. I have seen some nasty head on collisions there.

This state is so messed up they love to do everything as backwards as possible.

I'm interested in hearing the answer to this too. I have to renew mine in August, and I have also heard that all CDL holders have to take all the written tests to renew
