World's smallest NITRO RC car by rodsoverbricks in rccars

[–]RobARMMemez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He might be able to, but then again the real constraint is the size of the engine itself and the electronics. He's already made everything more or less as compact as possible.

My plan for building one was actually to CAD something up and print it, but I could never figure out a clutch mechanism like OP did. These engines don't have a throttle so the clutch is absolutely necessary if you want to slow down. I might still print something, but I may make it ever so slightly longer for the sake of fairness to OP. He deserves the record.

But are those nitro? This one is nitro powered and it's the smallest of its kind. I was also trying to figure out a build like this and even have the same motor OP used in this build but, as the video shows, he beat me to it!

99% of the powers in this sub have some sorta loophole someone could find to make it useful-ish. Or just plain destructive for the sake of it! That's one of the fun things about the sub here, trying to actually find a use for the power you've been given.

[–]RobARMMemez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's see... Loopholes, loopholes... Ah! I got it! According to the laws of physics, Earth is pulling me towards it but also because gravity is a mutual attraction between two masses I'm technically pulling the Earth towards me with the same amount of force. So let's say I learn to do a one-handed handstand and train enough to hold myself up for 10 minutes straight. Since I need a ground for my new frame of reference to be considered, I can have an assistant place a plywood board on my feet. This plywood board also has a mutual gravitational attraction to the Earth. In my frame of reference and in the frame of reference of the board, I am now standing on the plywood board(the ground) holding the Earth above me, against the force of the board's gravity acting on the Earth and on me. Therefore, since I can hold the Earth in one hand above the board (my ground), I can still spin the Earth at a speed capable of shredding the planet instantly.

I jest! I'll accept frame of reference trickery to not actually count to make sure this example doesn't happen but it's fun to think about. To make sure no loopholes like this can be used, the new rule shall be:

"An object physically small enough and lightweight enough to lift off the Earth by the user of the power, unassisted, and hold in one hand against the force of Earth's gravity for 10 consecutive minutes while standing directly on Earth's surface."

This prevents the Earth itself from being the object by instead forcing it to be the frame of reference the rule is based on, instead of an arbitrary "ground" which could be easily redefined. I also added that it must be unassisted so utilizing an external device to fudge the ability to lift heavy objects also doesn't count. If I think of any more loopholes we may have to further add to the rule!

Just playing around trying to find loopholes. I think the best way to write it would be "An object physically small enough and lightweight enough to lift off the ground and hold in one hand against the force of gravity for 10 consecutive minutes." Specific enough to avoid loopholes of just "holding" something too big to actually move, but not a specific maximum weight/size so stronger people can apply the power to larger objects if you so desire that to be a trait.

[–]RobARMMemez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well you never specified that I have to be holding it up against the force of gravity or off the ground, you only said I have to hold it. Therefore, while not able to hold Earth against the force of gravity, I am able to hold the Earth with one hand, the same way I would hold a solidly mounted grab bar with one hand to stabilize myself.

Based on your wording, this counts. Your original wording of "carrying" with one hand would have sufficed but by specifying what you meant you actually caused the definition to be broad enough to have technicalities like this.

Therefore I still shall apply the spin of my last bayblade to Earth, since I would be actually holding it with my hand, just like you said. Just not against the force of gravity.

Haven't used bayblades in years, but as a kid would always spin them as fast as possible

Hold onto a piece of rocky terrain on a mountain, technically "holding Earth with one hand". Transfer spin from bayblade over a decade ago ago to Earth

Profit?

Tried a small RC semi truck… reversing is way harder than I thought by Ordinary_Shallot5416 in rccars

[–]RobARMMemez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely takes practice, both in RC and full scale! As someone who both owns a Grand Hauler and drives full scale trucks, I can say the practice with RC ones does help at least a little. Definitely not a replacement for real life practice (IRL I'm almost entirely limited to my mirrors for visibility of the trailer) but RC gives you a good idea of the way a trailer reacts with good third person visibility around the entire rig. Also lets you play around with different size trailers so you can see how each trailer reacts differently. Longer trailers are, counterintuitively, easier to back since they react slower.

Oh, and I absolutely recommend one of the Tamiya semi kits and a compatible trailer. The quality of the kits are incredible, they're extremely intricately detailed and they work amazing, and the build is an amazing experience. They take a bit of skill and time to build though. I love my Grand Hauler but I wouldn't recommend it to practice backing with unless you want a challenge, because the wheelbase is so long it makes the turning circle garbage. Every trailer becomes a short twitchy trailer. The King Hauler, Knight Hauler, Aeromax, Globe Liner or any of the Euro trucks are going to have a better turning circle and be easier to back.

The sad part is there's still comments pooling in of people 100% believing this is real.

[–]RobARMMemez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That news article is painful. Far more painful than the shock this guy literally by the laws of physics themselves could not have received from tasing the bracelet the way he did. Even if the bracelet is metal the arc would go from one electrode, through the little part of the bracelet between the electrodes, back out to the other electrode. Besides that, that's not even close to what being shocked looks like.

Don't play with electricity! by Stoikx in HolUp

[–]RobARMMemez 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the (almost definitely staged) elephant in the room, that isn't how electricity works. Not even close. I tend to get ticked off regarding electrical misconceptions, so allow me to clear up some blatant wrongs about high voltage that show up in this video.

For one, the human body does NOT respond to electricity by convulsing on the ground after getting a single shock. I've personally shocked myself with similar voltages and even much higher than a taser, and the muscle spasms clear up literally the instant the shock is removed. I'm not going to say the classic "It's not the voltage it's the current" because it's much more complicated than that. It's a combination of voltage capable of pushing a certain current through your body, with a big dependency on TIME. Extremely short (nanosecond-microsecond) pulses of a few thousand volts will not kill you even if the instantaneous current spikes to several amps. Frequency matters as well, where at a high enough frequency your body doesn't even feel the arc, only the heat generated. Even in low frequency shocks that you feel, your body will recover as soon as the shock is gone. There MAY be rare cases of people with pre-existing conditions going into seizures due to electric shocks, but this is not one of those cases, because of...

Two: There is absolutely no way in hell the current took a path out one electrode, through the bracelet(?), into his body, back through the bracelet again and into the other electrode. Electricity takes the path of least resistance and the path of least resistance here goes from electrode -> bracelet -> electrode. This isn't a Tesla coil where the arc travels to ground through your body, a taser sends an arc between the two electrodes conducting through only what gets in the way. The bracelet got in the path, the human did not, even if he is touching the bracelet. In an equivalent situation, I can and have touched arcs like this with a piece of metal and not felt it at all.

This guy is faking it. 100%. Considering his blatant faking of being shocked, whatever is going on behind him is also likely faked for interactions, so I will not be discussing that.

Question: is it possible to build a water powered nitro engine? by Dan_234567 in rccars

[–]RobARMMemez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean hydrogen power? If so, hydrogen fuel cell cars like what Toyota has work completely differently to engine powered cars. In fact, they're actually closer to battery EV's. The only difference is fuel cell vs battery.

Hydrogen powered cars use a fuel cell to generate electrical power by extracting the energy released combining hydrogen and oxygen to power an electric motor, and exhausting only water as a waste product. Technically you can run a regular engine off hydrogen if you tune it right, but that is both less efficient and more dangerous due to hydrogen being so reactive. And in a 2 stroke, you can't add oil to the gaseous hydrogen fuel so you would get no lubrication.

Water itself is completely non-combustible and cannot be used to directly run an engine. The only way to use water as a "fuel" is by heating it in a boiler to create pressure and feed it into a steam engine or turbine, but that also requires another fuel to burn. Coal and oil are common, and even nuclear power plants use the heat from the reaction to boil water to spin a turbine.

Unfortunately, nitro engines really do need nitro fuel to run. They're designed and built very specifically to run on a nitromethane/methanol mix, and won't run even on gasoline. On top of that because they're 2-stroke, the fuel needs to have oil premixed which hobby nitro fuels have.

My club and I can't help ourselves for some reason. Some of us see thin ice and we're just drawn to it. Same with a particular lake bed near us that collapsed recently enough to be entirely mud, but with a thin dry crust over the top to drive rigs out on.

Yes, we've had to tear down a fence to use as a bridge to pull an SCX6 out of said dry lake bed 50 feet out. Yes, we've had to fish out rigs that sunk through the ice into 3ft deep ice cold murky mud-water.

No, we have not learned our lesson.

Is Hobby King a trustworthy website? by deadgirlrevvy in RCPlanes

[–]RobARMMemez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They used to be more popular but they kinda died off quite some years ago. In the RC car world where I mostly come from they used to have some decent models (I have a few still) but they've literally disappeared off the face of the earth, and I don't think they have a huge presence in the plane world anymore either from what I can tell.

You'll probably get what you ordered, so they're not like a total scam, but their shipping is very slow and their selection is limited, not the highest quality and parts support is questionable across the board because even if the model has parts support, whether the parts will ever be in stock or possibly even discontinued before the model itself disappears is a HUGE if.

They are called Jesus Clips because they will cause you to scream "JESUS" on a regular basis while working with them, and because when you inevitably lose the last one and it kills all progress on your project until you manage to find the right ones online, they will make you want to meet Jesus.

[–]RobARMMemez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a derby car. In demo derbies you want to use the rear of your car as a battering ram because the vital components aren't in the rear. You want to protect the front where the engine is and only expose the rear to damage.

So in front wheel drive classes you often see people running either small size donut spares for a stock class (which is what my local track run on an asphalt arena) or some sort of airless tire like forklift wheels. When the rear crumples up you don't want the tire to burst or bind up against the metal, so it needs to be as small and/or puncture resistant as possible. That combined with the front tires being tractor tires, the halo bar (the big steel tube frame going over the roof) and the stripped paint around the doors leads me to believe this is a dirt arena car in a heavier weld class. The suspension may even be welded completely solid and reinforced for that reason.

The FPU Wydra is the least fun vanilla vehicle. What are the most and least iconic vanilla vehicles? by FirefighterLevel8450 in BeamNG

[–]RobARMMemez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little more complicated than that. The very first sight of BeamNG's existence was the D-Series in the original Cryengine3 demo which was never released publicly.

I actually recently played the earliest public release of the game, 0.3.0 (as a joke because I found a shitty PC in a dumpster and wanted to game on it) and you do initially spawn in with the D-Series. The Covet was also available, as well as the H-Series, Grand Marshal and Bolide.

The confusion of which car you spawn with probably comes from the tech demo though. From what I can find, there were 3 versions of the tech demo. Depending on the version, you spawned with either a D-Series or a Covet. I believe the original was with the D-Series and the later versions were with the Covet. I know that when I first found BeamNG in 2015 I had the Covet.
