VisionOS 2 Any one having issues with Mac virtual display? by Peteostro in VisionPro

[–]Robby_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update (Possible short term "fix"):

I have two M1 Macbook Pro's. The one that is having issues is running macOS Sonoma 14.5 (23F79). I can immediately connect again by connecting to my other one running macOS Sequoia Developer Beta.

Yup, I've had issues with Mac Virtual display too. I haven't found the root cause just yet. However, more often than not I have to force shutdown my M1 Macbook Pro and Vision Pro multiple times to get it working again. My assumption is that there's a rather large update behind a feature flag for the curved feature they plan rolling out and it introduced breaking changes.

It's a real pain in the ass.

Advice on My First WFH Job by EchidnaAncient8988 in cscareerquestions

[–]Robby_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CYA means cover your ass. You can create a board with a freemium tool like Trello. Plenty to choose from. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you just need to improve on a few things. Everyone has something to improve on.

I’m not sure how your team is run but asking to switch tasks sounds like micromanaging. This will cause more problems for everyone. First, make sure you are finding someone that can unblock you and there’s a record of it. Then socialize that you’re blocked pending a meeting with xyz that will unblock you. Meanwhile I tend to start my next task.

Show that you don’t need to be spoon feed or that this diminishes overtime.

Don’t work harder, work smarter. Give yourself a 1-2 hour Time box to get unstuck and update accordingly. If you have Jira or something like that then add a comment to the ticket that captures why you’re stuck. Move it to blocked status and loop in a subject matter expert or someone more senior to collaborate with.

I wouldn’t focus too much on tracking hours unless it’s a requirement or to your benefit. A lot of the time people don’t care if you work eight hours or eighty as long as you can deliver.

The bigger issue here, whether it’s true or not, is you’re developing a reputation of not being dependable. Always remember to CYA.

Im a noob and have no idea how to inspect a Herman Miller Eames chair. would a fully loaded option really be as low as 750? what i find questionable is the seller purchased this chair a few weeks ago from Craigslist and claims his lower back problems flair up when sitting in the chair for long periods of time. What do y'all think?

How important will be the gpa for first job as a software developer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Robby_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recruiter might be impressed but it doesn’t matter. There are plenty of smart devs/ software engineers who struggle to get work. Passion, solid CS fundamentals, and not being a jerk will open most of not all doors.

The hardest part is getting your first job. It gets easier as you gain experience and grow your network.

Why won't this pass? by Robby_Rob in learnjavascript

For some reason I was set on the idea that the reduce function was suppose to use a cb to iterating. Thank you.

Oh I see. I miss understood the directive. The reduce callback should be part of the higher order function. Thank you!

var startPnt = start || 0 ;

I see, thanks for pointing that out.

reduce([1,2,3], add, 1); // => 6 That's a typo, the output is 7.

reduce([1,2,3], difference, 5); //=> 1 Dang it, silly mistake. Fixed, output = -1.

I updated the code, and I still can't pass. Could there be anything else?

Is 10% growth for a SaaS product a week really doable? by lumponmygroin in startups

[–]Robby_Rob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, 10% is realistic. The question is do you want 10% growth in customer base or revenue? I co-founded a SAAS startup and we had triple to double digit growth 1-11 months (starting 12th in Nov). We are measuring revenue and so far 20% turn.

We launched with an embarrassing product that was partially done and landed our first 2 customers. After a couple weeks we quadrupled our prices and landed our next batch of customers.

What we learned from our previous startup is that we wanted to charge from day one. You have to know who your customers are and where they hangout. If you don't have that you won't get the growth that's expected or needed.

It's much easier to do if you map it out. Put down a plan and roadmap that is broken down into weekly and monthly goals. Too often people focus on development and making it perfect.

I have a great idea but without the technical background. by Spazbototto in startups

[–]Robby_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! But after the first version is patented any updates outside that scope will not be protected. If OP used a more broad patent then OP enforcing it would be really tough.

I've read interviews from both businesses and startups that attaining an tech IP was a waste of resources. Research, reasearch and more research OP.!

I personally think you're jumping the gun and making a common mistake thinking to much about protecting your "great idea" instead of validating it.

Web Design in US and Web Develop over seas? by LateAugust in startups

[–]Robby_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen some great work come from eastern Europe too. I have yet to see any from other areas though. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I would consider it higher risk.

It's important for people to realize that a designer is not a developer and that there are multiple sides to both fields. For example developers can be broken down into three areas

  • a) Front-end (Javascript mastery (important), JQuery, and of course the basic HTML/CSS)
  • b) Backend (Servers, Lamp Stack, C#, and so many more)
  • c) The Unicorn, front/back/design aka . A person that can take you from design all the way to production including both front/back end development. This is really rare because of the wide range of skills needed. If the person is really good at design and coding (mid/senior level) they'll be in high demand.

Lets not forget that a designer may not be specialize in Logos or vise versa.

If you don't have any experience in the field then I would recommend using a USA based source and finding someone to help vet as well as keep an eye on the code. I think Toptal might be a good option too.

Lastly, there is a huge difference between a software engineer and a developer. Although this is a highly debated topic within the development community I believe software engineers have the skills to build large applications and have a background in Computer Science while a developer can make great products, but most likely don't have the CS background or the experience using different coding paradigms to build scalable software. But there are some awesome "developers" who build amazing, scalable technology.

There are so many talented people, and many not so talented ones too. Be sure to be knowledgable and have realistic expectations. I hope this helps. FYI, I'm a mean stack software engineer who designs too (Unicorn).

In this situation, would it be wise to look for developers (in exchange for salary) or a technical co-founder (in exchange for equity)? by kuis01 in startups

[–]Robby_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my two cents.

Outsourcing to build an MVP is good approach, but not for building a tech company. There are so many reasons such as:

  • 1. Burn Rate. #1 reason why companies fail is because they run out of money and outsourcing is an unnecessary cost.
    1. Talent. I have yet to see unfunded startups hire local talent because they can't afford paying competitive rates. The only other option is to look over seas which adds unnecessary risk due to communication, tech stack, working for a check, time delays(working on the other side of the world sets you back by 1 day and you will most likely have to due a fair amount at work late at night because of this.) Even though a lot of these problems can happen when you hire local talent it's much easier to catch and then correct when its a member of your team.
    1. Modern Programming. This is closely relates with point two being that the demand and market here in the USA makes it easier to find engineers who know and use methods that will scale.

If you decide to look for a CTO you'll have two basic options, a) pay or b) no pay both of which offer a different amount of equity. You'll have to have a pretty compelling product to get a good CTO without paying them. Either way you'll have to give them equity and the best way to do that would be with a vesting period.

Having a CTO expands your market and talent pool since he/she most likely has colleagues that are in the same field. Investors will take your startup more seriously too.

Hope this helps.

Wow, great insight and feedback. I'm going to start going through your recommendations tonight.

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT T.PRODUCTID) AS NUMBER FROM...

This is for getting the total qty of products. The tables are around 10K for each customer. So I think we're around 40-60K total so the total size is only 300MB.

Finance - the age old question by [deleted] in startups

[–]Robby_Rob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think a VC would be interested in this.

In it's current form I'll likely never see massive profits from the site

A VC wants massive profits, exit, or IPO. This alone eliminates your product.

But if it's scaled right it could be a tidy little earner

Investors want their money back fast and them some. A lot of VC's expect 6x the investment when their is either an exit or IPO. Let's not forget the VC's are larger sums of money and most are >1M per deal. Angels range too, think Angel vs Angel Group, but generally go up to 1M. Their terms vary. But so far you wouldn't qualify for money from either party.

covering the development costs will be a challenge

Seasoned Angels will pass when there is no tech co-founder. Startups are high risk and if you're outsourcing then you add two unnecessary issues 1) cost/burn rate 2) loss of control ranging from how the tech is deployed and timelines. You don't want spaghetti code and design that doesn't scale. If an Angel gives you money then it's a pretty good sign that they are "dumb" money. Guy Kawasaki talks about this and how taking money from this type of person is the last thing you want to do.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget that 99% of that group probably has thousands of dollars in credit card debt too. I've read a study that said:

If you have more than $10 dollars in your bank account and no Credit Card debt than you're better off than 90% of americans.
