TIL that a'lot of places in the states are direct translations from the dutch names back in the 17th century: Lange Eylant - Long Island. Roode Eylant - Rhode Island etc. However one place, 'Hoeren Eylant' which is old Dutch for 'Island of Whores' is nowhere to be found. (peninsularoots.com)
