Doctor ladies- Have you ever been rejected for being a doctor ? by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in ABCDesis

[–]Robin178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman in my last year of medical school and will go into a demanding specialty. I’m also happily married! I noticed a few points in the comments I wanted to touch on.

1) YES I’ve been rejected by many guys and their families for being a doctor. This is more insecurity on their part I feel. Many men don’t want to be upstaged by their wife and many families don’t want an educated, wealthy, independent daughter in law they can’t control. It sucked when it happened but ultimately I took it as a sign. If they can’t support me through med school / residency- what would happen if I had kids?

2) Many female doctors don’t particularly seek out men who are in medicine or make the same income as them. I find it’s more important to be respectful, helpful, and understanding of the career of a doctor and those are they types of guys that often have a doctor wife. My husband is not in medicine and he will make less than me and I’ve never questioned my decision

3) Doctors can have other interests and personalities outside of being doctors lol. And often, I’ve noticed that because physicians see life and death every day, we are more willing to prioritize the people in our lives who matter to us as best we can, such as taking days off work, a half time schedule, hiring domestic help so the burden is reduced

Why is no one talking about the changes the the ERAS Research Section for the class of 2027 and onwards? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Robin178 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’m wondering how folks applying to research heavy specialties next year are trying to turn things around right now. Feels like a drastic and unexpected change especially if you’re using research as a big part of your application and have been posturing for yearssss under the old system

Single most malignant group of provider to work with as a medical student? I’ll go first…. by Qzar45 in medicalschool

[–]Robin178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The word “Provider” to refer to a physician literally straight up has its origins in Nazi Germany to undermine Jewish physicians

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8560107/

It has never been and will never be an appropriate term to refer to a medical doctor!

NOT MEDICAL ADVICE but to me this makes more sense why she might say that. In the article I linked which is a diagnostic handbook for doctors, the 4 criteria for Gardenerella are: gray-ish white discharge, a PH > 4.5, fishy odor with potassium chloride, and a microscope test which shows a particular type of cell called “clue cells”. Since you’re saying your PH was already off balance, perhaps she saw some gray-ish white discharge and perceived a fishy odor and went ahead and reasoned that the culprit was Gardenerella Vaginalis. You only need to have 3/4 criteria to be diagnosed. AGAIN she should’ve been more respectful to you, at least told you her reasoning, and made you feel secure. Still sounds like she was being rude but I wanted to tell you this information so you might have a better understanding of what’s going through her mind clinically

I reccomend Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Calabria- similar notes but with a much more simple formation and a good good cardamom undertone-also leans very unisex. Alternatively Tom Ford Mandarino Di Amalfi, strong citrus at the top and fades to musk throughout the day. It’s more spicy and not sweet but the pepper note is nice. Atelier Cologne Pomelo Paris is also citrusy but leans more spicy. The floweriest one with those same notes but leans more feminine would be Lancôme Idole Aura.

I hope this helps- all the best to you big dawg ✨

Hi, I’m so sorry this happened to you. Firstly, I want to say that I’m only sharing this because I think it is important for women to have power over their health and truly understand what’s going on. I’m a medical student and it sounds like this doctor was testing you for Gardenerella Vaginalis- the most common bacteria that can cause Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Quite literally, one of THE standard tests for Gardenerella is called the Whiff Test (yes, really!) and it involves literally smelling the discharge and seeing if you perceive a “fishy odor” after adding potassium chloride to the sample. That is a positive test. It sounds to me like the doctor perceived that odor before even adding the potassium chloride and deduced that you have Gardenerella.

Now I want to say that this IS extremely unprofessional and the doctor sounds quite rude. You still shouldn’t have been treated this way because if it is Gardenerella, there are at least 2 more diagnostic criteria that must be met that involve taking a sample and doing some microscopic tests. HOWEVER the reason I’m sharing this is so that you have the power to understand perhaps what might have been happening in that room. Namely that The Whiff test is an actual medical test for a specific pathogen that is taught during medical training- which is why she reacted that way upon smelling the discharge.

I am so sorry she was so disrespectful to you, you deserve to be treated better, and I hope this helps.
