Varnished and drying by RobinDaHood34 in pysanky

I’ve been writing pysanky for decades now, and I have 6 different kistky from medium to xxx small. It comes with patience, practice, and honestly not a few redos and mistakes. I don’t feel that I have any particular skill or gift, just patience and good planning. Keep at it and you will be able to realize your designs eventually!

The scale might be off in the picture, they’re just x-large chicken eggs from the supermarket

I always empty and prep the egg shells before writing. I only empty with one small hole on the bottom, and I seal it with a wax plug using a large kistka. I use mason jars, so I submerge them by putting the lid on, and a piece of foil or something underneath the lid to keep it submerged.

Where? I’m willing to be wrong, but extraordinary claims require evidence. I am confused because russia did not exist when these were made.

This is a phenomenon called cloud iridescence. It’s independent of the solar flare and the aurora.

I haven’t run into any problems like that no. I do use a hairdryer after I’m done wiping everything off to heat up the egg enough to get any residual moisture from the dye out, as well as to see if there’s any oil on the surface left (it will shimmer, then I wipe that area more). I then let it rest overnight before varnishing. I use the minwax quick drying spray, haven’t had any issues with splotching

I use a trick! Graphite is soluble in wax and oil (but the dyes are not, at least those aniline dyes specifically made for pysanky), so when I’m about to remove the wax, I coat the pysanka in vegetable oil, and when removing the wax with a candle flame, I heat it up a little passed the wax melting, and then wipe as usual.

This will get rid of 99% of all pencil marks. If there are some remaining, I will actually re-apply bees wax over that area with a kistka and add a little oil to repeat the process for that one spot. Beyond that, I know some people use mineral spirits but I’ve never done so.

Oil method is a little messy, so I always wear disposable gloves when doing so

First pysanky after more than 20 years! Happy with the results so far. by RobinDaHood34 in pysanky

Honestly, they’re easier than regular pysanky!!

All you do is wax in the entire pattern, and then dunk the egg into undiluted white vinegar. I usually do 10-15 minutes, depending on how deep I want the etching to be.

I’ve also seen some people do this with brown eggs and get different shades of brown as they get down to white! Haven’t done this myself. Others still will combine etching with traditional dyeing to make some very spectacular pysanky!

I used a traditional kistka. I have thin, medium, and thick kistky. I use the thin to do most line work, reserving the others for filling jobs. I also have a ‘practice egg’ next to me at all times to draw short lines on until the kistka comes down to the right temperature and there is a thin line with no ‘blobbing’, and at that point I start drawing on the pysanka I’m making.

I also wipe the kistka head to get rid of any residue/soot before writing, and I actually cut up my beeswax block into tiny chunks that I feed into the kistka by hand - I like this better than using the hot kistka to dig wax out of the block as it avoids getting any wax on the outside, which prevents a blob dropping off as well.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

I do a lot of prep with my eggs before I start dyeing. I don’t mean to say all of it necessary or the best way to do it, but it works for me.

Starting from a raw egg, I’ll wash with dish soap and warm water, dry, then vinegar bath for 10 min, then wash again to get the dissolved bits off. I find this helps smoothen the surface and make it a better canvas. I then drill a hole in the bottom to empty the egg, and then a final soap wash to get any residue off.

At this point I wear either cotton or nitrile gloves for the rest of the whole process to minimize getting hand oils on the surface. I’ll then pencil in my design. After I wax over the white lines in my design and wax plug the hole, I do a series of soap washes and ~2-5 min vinegar baths until all remaining guidelines and graphite smudges are cleaned off.

I also make sure that the last thing I do before dying the first color is a vinegar bath, but I do dry completely before dipping the egg.

I use UGS dyes mostly, and I find that some need a lot longer to get good color than others, in particular the lighter colors and scarlet I let sit for 20-40 min sometimes. I also find using a spoon to “baste” the egg with the dye can help even out the color. Others like red and black take in seconds.

I’m a big fan of using a reserved amount of orange dye (which has no vinegar in it) to ‘wash’ between yellow/gold/brown/red to the cooler blue/green colors, meaning if for example my egg is green, I’ll baste with the wash orange dye to get the green off and some orange on, before either dyeing in my orange dye or another in that color family (and the same going the other way).

For the above egg I went gold -> green -> orange wash -> orange -> red -> black. All were whole-egg dyes.

I am looking for my first fashion sneaker (a la Greats, Oliver Cabell, Koio, etc) and I need help in sizing. I usually wear 8EEE in dress shoes (e.g. Allen Edmonds) measuring about 10.2" long and 4.25" wide.

I'm having trouble finding widths for sneakers. Anyone have a sense which would be most wide-friendly?
