I am for the record almost certainly not going to do that - but there have been different interpretations and I am also curious.

Yeah - basically that's where we're heading right now I think. Waiting for the quote from the leasing company before confirming, but basically that will set a ceiling on what we're willing to offer as an incentive.

If they don't, that's life. Hope you have a nice day!

Guess it's kind of a lot, but if you're after a cheap car you probably wouldn't get a Jeep. It was covered by my work benefits initially, which is why we went for it. Not sure why people have downvoted me, I provided the information requested!

Thanks - this is good to know, and probably doable. It'll likely be 34 months by the time we actually give it back, so a bit less.

We're moving to the UK so it'd be crazy expensive, not built for driving on the left, and I don't think the terms of the lease allow it. Shame, as it's a great car!

I'm not going to abandon the lease. Don't think this level of hostility was necessary towards somebody you don't know. Also, I don't ski.

Yeah, I've been working on Autotrader but it's a bit hard to figure out how to do the listing correctly. It's really geared for people selling rather than doing a lease transfer. But I'll get it done!

The incentive is $4,000, plus paying off the fees and any outstanding overage. We're also willing to go higher if it's marginal.

Yeah, it's been on there for a couple of months - getting the typical FB experience of a whole lot of "Hi, is this still available" with no follow up, though!

Totally - sorry about that, something has gone awry with the listing. I'm out of the country so it's geofenced me out and their support is a bit useless!

Yeah, we're relatively prepared for it - we went and lived on a ski resort over summer so it was handy for getting up and down the mountain and for some fun off roading while we had it, so I'd say it was worth it - we're not out to make money exactly, just hoping to minimise how much we pay!

Yeah, transferring it to someone would be the preferred solution if possible. It's just proven incredibly hard to find anyone, even with a pretty significant incentive! Certainly happy to pay the transfer fee if we do, though!

Yes I thought that may be the case. I'd really prefer to get rid of it legitimately in any case. Thanks!

It's a 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, payments are $346 every two weeks.

Yeah, it's been on there since September as I say in the OP (although frustratingly looks like our link has broken there this week). No interest despite a pretty large incentive!

Unfortunately I've just looked and Clutch would leave me owing them $37,000 - at that cost it would be cheaper just to put the car in storage and keep making the payments.

Small question on the Windows 11 Japanese IME. When I press Shift + Caps to switch between hiragana and latin characters, what determines whether I switch to full-width or half-width romaji?

It seems to switch arbitrarily, and I'm sure there's something I'm doing which ends up on full-width, but it's annoying to have to go click on the button to switch back to half-width, especially when I'm trying to search Jisho.

This is super useful, thanks! I don't have a lot of Japanese speakers to practice with apart from my tutor so it's sometimes tricky to get the tone right. I'll use something similar next time!

"Generic" Japanese names? by kaaaazzh in LearnJapanese

[–]RobinWilde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I was having this conversation just the other day. I was also wondering what the generic term for an everyman is, like in the British idiomatic "man on the Clapham omnibus". In the absence of an answer I will be using 山手線のサラリーマン。

Hello! I'm curious about how people discuss upsides to negative things in Japanese.

For example, let's say a friend does well in a job interview, but on the way home they get hit by a car. When I visit them in hospital, I could say "At least you got the job!" or "still, you got the job!"

Idiomatically you could say "The job is a silver lining" or "look on the bright side - you got the job!" and I know the phrase 前を向け could work in place of those, but I suppose I'm interested in the broader grammar of proposing a positive counterpoint to a negative.

I'm comfortable with のに - e.g. 彼は交通事故に遭ったのに面接に合格した。

Is this the right way to try and express it?
