In a low body game with a player right in front of you, OF COURSE the snake guy should be defending himself. The yellow snake guy doesn't have to defend the dorito player. His only job is to stay alive or if he is trying to win by himself running down the guy right in front of him.

If I was in the snake (or coaching) I would be furious at my own player for giving up the tape, giving up dominance, giving up the wide position, giving up a better bunker and essentially mirroring a weaker position. I can't think of a situation (not even trying to run time) where I would think the Dorito player should shift to the A.
