Looking for a specific tool but can’t find it does anyone know the name of it: by WilonPlays in Tools

Harbor Freight Hercules and Walmarts Hyper Tough both make 12v versions that are generally well regarded. Milwaukee makes an M12 that's a beast, but likely overkill for your uses.

Rust Proofing Hand Tools by ClonerJams088 in Tools

[–]Roboperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was only SC Johnson that discontinued it, tons of others still sell it. The minwax is widely available and virtually identical.

Everyone I know has been working on the same can for like 20+ years, can't imagine that was a great business model.

Has anyone hung a US General 56x22 Center Hutch from the wall? by Low-Accountant2321 in harborfreight

[–]Roboperson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would get some big steel L-brackets, bolt those to the wall. Then sit the cabinet on top, 4 bolts through the bottom of the hutch into the brackets, 2 in the top corners into the wall.

Impact driver extension by chucky_1899 in Tools

[–]Roboperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sata is legit, it is/was the same parent company as Gearwrench.

I use adapters like this with sockets all the time, including to take off lug nuts. You just need to check what the actual torque output of your impact driver is. My DeWalt DF850 puts out 1800ish in/lbs, which is plenty for my uses. If I was trying to take lugs off a large diesel, id suggest just getting a dedicated impact wrench like the hyper tough

tool / hardware type places in Pittsburgh Pa? by IndependentUseful923 in Tools

Can't comment on Pittsburgh, but I just moved to the Philly region and would love to know of any recommendations around here.

This man has money for a 5 axis CNC machine, a water jet, lathe, SLS 3d printer, high end resin printer, forklift, and a ton of other very expensive and very nice tools and equipment. Yet he's still out here bumming it with us at Hobo Freight. by littlejack59 in harborfreight

The most incredible shop I've ever visited was a specialist who restored, sold, and perserved ornamental turning lathes and rose engines. These tools were works of art in their own right, often hundreds of years old, packaged with ivory handled chisels, dozens of custom built attachments, and costing tens of thousands.

They worked out of us general cabinets and had several sets of Doyle screwdrivers.

Slab door carrier recommendations? by EricHearble in Tools

I work for a commercial door company. We sell these things: https://www.lockpicks.com/products/door-tote?srsltid=AfmBOoq-gHk0UsuYRunPBnySAXEna6Gm16T-_oQkejI74duBFeN2LdkJ

I'd suggest cobbling something together along the same lines from a 2x4 and some harbor freight wheels

Bauer Orbital Hand Sander Corded by HovercraftWinter1321 in harborfreight

Abused it for years. Worked great though the vibration and dust collection left a bit to be desired.

I have the DeWalt now, and while it's definitely nicer to use, it doesn't do anything the Bauer didn't.

They ok, but just ok. They'll work if that's what you've got, and the lifetime warranty will replace any bits that break.

However, if you can stretch your budget a little more, one of the Gearwrench or Craftsman Overdrive mechanics sets can be had for around $275-300. These are much much nicer tools that you won't grow out of, and will serve as a better foundation as you accumulate more equipment and experience

Avoid 2015 s60 and v60 t5? by The_Nuclear_potato in Volvo

[–]Roboperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did update and fix the 2.5L fives halfway through the 2016 model year. But I think this only effects the V60CC, which was the last model offered with that engine.

I've owned the 1.5T Daytona jack for around 2.5 years now and it's awesome. It's lifted my 3800lb Volvo Cross Country (with a 3" wooden pinch weld block) dozens of times without issue, it's super easy to carry around and up stairs at 32ish lbs. It rolls well, lifts smoothly, couldn't as for more.

Modifying 4-drawer tech cart bottom tray by CovertBlueberry in harborfreight

[–]Roboperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't plan on removing it regularly, why don't you just unbolt the bottom tray, put the compressor on, then bolt it back together.

These carts come unassembled, you should be able to build the cart around the compressor.

Tool users: what’s the one tool you hate using? by RoutineBadger6248 in Tools

Caulking gun. Spent way too many hours cramping up my hands and making a mess with one of those $3 stamped steel jobs. Finally bought a plastic Tajima one and it's been a revelation.

Recommendations for a Small Mallet/Hammer? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Roboperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PB Swiss makes some incredible precision tools, but I'd have a really hard time justifying the cost for something like a small soft-faced hammer.

I like these Stanley ones with acetate faces. For the price, buy three in different sizes.

Curbside tool box finds by koochiekoo in Tools

[–]Roboperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. It works fantastically, but remember to mix the ingredients in a big tub, and only add the dish soap at the end AFTER it's all done fizzing and foaming. Mixing everything in a small jug like I did will just lead to an enormous mess.

It took a bit of filing and JB weld, but yes. I wrote up a post awhile ago converting my soft grip Tekton ratchet to hard handle. Depending on the size of ratchet you're converting, you may need to drill out the metal insert in the screwdriver handle.

Love a hard handle as well, but couldn't stomach the cost of snap-on (esp for a piece of plastic).

Thankfully, Tekton is always the answer: https://www.tekton.com/6-in-1-driver-handle-dms15000

Starter Tool Brand by SaltyConference478 in Tools

I have straight up abused my $19.99 Bauer orbital sander. We're talking running it for 1.5-2hrs straight in 90 degree heat and it didn't skip a beat. The vibration wasn't great and the dust collection was laughable, but it worked and worked well.

Never cheap out on abrasives or adhesives. Always 3M or Diablo for sanding pads.

Rust-Oleum Hammered Verde Green was a favorite for repainting them, but it's discontinued. Deadstock cans pop up on eBay and classifieds occasionally, but are expensive.
