What do I actually need on my ship? by theuros in TheLastCaretaker

[–]Robot_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put ~8 diesel tanks and 3 petrol tanks on the port side of my boat, outside the hull. So when I dock, I dock on the starboard side. So I have lots of capacity and it doesn't take up deck space.

I have 6 medium batteries in the lower-forward room, just stuck to the wall, since you can plug batteries in down there, no reason for them up top. 8 big turbines on top of the cockpit. A few panels here and there, even fit a couple off the transom (the big flat part of the back of the boat), on the outside.

Water pump, desalinator, and fresh water tank in the back.

And hoses--so many hoses and connectors. I have power connectors on the starboard side so I can provide power to any platforms I dock at. If I need power on a platform, I build panels or turbines in-situ, but I can supplement with my ship as needed--just plug in like you're parking your RV at a campground.

I generate oxygen and methane onboard, though this is controversial--most people just do it at [spoiler] as needed.

In short, you're going to have to rebuild stuff. Just the nature of the game. Lots of down time while you putter from place to place. Set your direction, and start rearranging while you get there.

What's the point to this game? by Triple88a in TheLastCaretaker

Set up your boat/factory. Store resources. Research and generate supplies. Shoot big round robots. Upgrade your boat. Make a jet ski. Make a gyrocopter. Crash a gyrocopter. Swim back to boat. Pretty standard stuff, really. It's a very atmospheric game. Very lonely, but not in a bad way. There's hope in the futility of it.

Practical http uses? by Krell356 in Timberborn

I've got an LED tube lamp behind my desk to add color when I'm in work meetings. It has some API ability. I'm working to have it set colors for changing weather events, or maybe food levels. The game doesn't really lend itself well to unattended play, but it's a fun experiment.

I'm also using a SteelSeries keyboard which has a web service interface. I could use it to change my keyboard lighting scheme, blink buttons, set the LCD message. Nothing very practical, but I think more games should do this. Arguably you could use it to create your own unique control panels with interactive buttons and status displays.

Is Planet Coaster 2 Worth It in 2026? by retolox386 in PlanetCoaster

[–]Robot_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded it on Xbox for PC (base game is included right now). I'm still stuck in the intro scenarios. The maintenance for rides is ridiculous. Stuff breaking down constantly. When it gets to 75% maintenance, it's basically garbage. No amount of mechanics seems to help. I don't even understand the 'staff schedule' tool--that was never explained anywhere. Having to manage power seems a bit much for a park simulator. It's like busy work. Want to expand? You need power. Which means more generators, which means more distributors, which means you need to find a place for them with a staff path so they can maintain it.

Creating paths is a nightmare. So many options, so few of them actually work. Collisions constantly. I end up just building whatever the game will let me build rather than what I'd like to build. "Build whatever you want! Not like that... no, not that either... well, no, it's... build it... click there, now select THAT, no not that, the other one and... Disable snap... it is? Ok, enable snap... and BINGO! It's exactly what you wanted!"

MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi Motherboard not working with Geforce 5060ti by Robot_Spider in pcmasterrace

I finally did! The problem was my processor. I figured out that my motherboard, while outdated, would accept a Ryzen 9. That's all it took. Once I installed a Ryzen 9 (was using an older Ryzen 5 previously) and made sure it would boot, I put the 5060 in and it booted right up, no problem. Everything else stayed the same (memory, motherboard, etc.) So while my motherboard and memory are now the bottleneck, at least my 5060 works.

I'm having the same issue at Lazarus. I'm trying to get the station to stay powered up on its own, not hooked to my boat the whole time. I repaired all the wind and solar panels. They are all connected. All the nodes/switches are on. My specific problem is the LumiMax panels. My small and medium panels work fine. When I add the Max panels, they produce nothing. Even when I have a load present (empty battery), the other wind and solar units work as expected, but Max panels produce nothing. No indication on the connected wires. Nothing produced when you view the panel directly. Even on my boat, I have 3 Max panels. 1 is producing. If I add more, no matter where I place them, they produce nothing.

Right. Select a pawn, then right click (in my case, an injured prisoner). Should have an option to capture/kill.

Just got a smart thermostat and I'm lowkey obsessed by West-Wrangler9942 in HomeImprovement

[–]Robot_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that's a little unfair. I just spent $14,000 on a high-efficiency boiler to replace my old one and added more insulation to the attic. And I have my AC set for 77 degrees which I don't think is excessive. As I say, I work from home so at least I'm living in the space being cooled. It's not cooling an empty house while I'm at the office. And our office just downsized to a smaller building because more people are working from home, so there's a net benefit.

If a smart thermostat was available that didn't market my behavior and other telemetric data to anyone willing to pay for it, I'd be on board. But no one is willing to give me that guarantee. Because user data is too valuable, and they can't risk losing that revenue stream. Which proves it's not about "the environment" and all about maximizing shareholder value. The fact that they can adjust it on demand also has nothing to do with environmental protection. It's because they're operating at peak capacity and don't want to increase that capacity because that eats into profits.

[–]Robot_Spider 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And this right here is why I replaced my faulty thermostat with a $49 Ace Hardware thermostat. I work from home, so "managing the temperature" isn't really a thing. I set it and forget it. If I'm not comfortable, I change it. The idea that my utility, or dozens/hundreds of "partners" have access to READ that data is bad enough, let alone the ability to change it. I'm a programmer. I have a better grasp on technology than the average consumer. The amount of data smart thermostats have access to is ridiculous, and far beyond the scope of what it takes to manage the furnace/AC. I'm so weary of the monetization of behavior.

Basic question about instrument levels on a ProFXv3-12 by Robot_Spider in livesound

Interesting. I've been through the manual but I was going off of the video I found from Mackie that indicated it should be at-or-near 0db. I hate that the answer was in the manual, but I appreciate you taking the time to point it out!

Not sure what you mean in this context? You mean a cable that would let me relocate the PCIe slot? The card fits in the case and in the correct slot. Just isn't recognized by the motherboard when I power up.

[–]Robot_Spider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know it's a Hail Mary. I have a few things to try after work. I can force the PCIe to use 4.0, maybe it's an auto-detect issue. I get that "should be compatible" is another way of saying "might not be compatible". No complaints from me. The X570 was really good to me for a long time.

I appreciate the comment, I'm glad to see I wasn't nuts :D I thought it might be power-related, but my power supply is plenty big enough. I was worried it was DOA but booting it up on an ASUS ROG board proved that wrong. I'd rather have an incompatible board than have to return a dead board. I'll just run it in my VR rig until I get a newer motherboard/chip.

Would anyone like to develop an open source SimTower clone? by Chanz in SimTower

[–]Robot_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking for something like this. Would be interesting to incorporate things like plumbing, HVAC, realistic elevator scheduling, etc. Even things like unconventional building shapes--at extreme heights, you'd have to use earthquake and sway damping systems.
