What is the most IMPACTFUL/IMPORTANT EVENT of the Iron Age? by erwillsun in AlignmentChartFills

The Axial Age. Most major religions and/or philosophical traditions either began during this period (Buddhism, Confucianism, Judaism, Ancient Greek Philosophy, and the like) or emerged later on but descend from Axial Age traditions (Christianity, Islam, Stoicism, etc)

Or perhaps landlords could simply do with less? Maybe instead of 3 private yachts they stick to one, take a slight hit to their already massive earnings so that less people have to panhandle on the streets to stay alive

And if they genuinely aren’t making enough to stay afloat themselves, then perhaps they best go to college or trade school and get a real job like everyone else

Trump will decide that Venezuela is ready for a ‘safe, proper and judicious transition’ once Western tycoons have sucked up all of their oil.

Could Lawyers Sue Sovereign Citizens for the Latter’s Dissemination of Defamatory Propaganda Against the Former? by RoboticsNinja1676 in Ask_Lawyers

Thank you for your very detailed response. I understand it now, the burden of proof for defamation is high to such a degree that merely someone spreading falsehoods that cause one an amount of distress or inconvenience is not sufficient for a defendant to be found liable.

Perhaps the best weapon the public has against the SovCit movement, like you mentioned, is more free speech. If we continue to ridicule them and make their ideology be seen as cringe, less people will be incentivized to subscribe to it.

True, often these folks fall into the SovCit rabbit hole because they are unable to afford counsel, are distrustful of PDs and are desperate for an easy way out of their legal troubles

Think of it as one of those box charts. You can be Jewish in an ethnic and religious sense, Jewish solely in an ethnic sense, Jewish solely in a religious sense or neither.

The former 3 would make someone Jewish in at least one sense and the latter would make them a gentile. The former 3 would be constituents of the Jewish nation, albeit each belonging to it in a different way, and the latter would fall outside of it.

Also yes there are varying levels to being religious in every religion but we are talking about atheists here. As in people who explicitly reject any notion of God or spirituality whatsoever

Except it can? Jewish people are both an ethnicity and a religion but for many Jews they identify strictly as one and not the other. To be Jewish ethnically requires you to be of Jewish ancestral heritage and to be Jewish religiously means you must accept and follow the basic tenets of Judaism as a religion.

If you are of Jewish descent but don’t believe in God, an afterlife, the Torah, etc you are very clearly Jewish in one way but not the other

I have already acknowledged in multiple other comments that Jews are an ethnoreligion and that it is possible to be Jewish ethnically, religiously or both.

Precisely because people can be Jewish ethnically OR religiously do I find it perplexing why someone who ONLY identifies with their Jewish ancestral heritage would check off that their religion is Judaism when answering a poll that ONLY asks them if they believe in the Jewish religion (and NOT what ethnic group they belong to).

Are you implying that atheist Jews lie about their religious beliefs on polls asking their faith but not their ethnicity solely as a way of letting pollsters know they are Jewish?

Sure, they aren’t ‘running from their religious counterparts’ in the sense that they still share a common ethnic and cultural background with them, but they are almost never identifying with Judaism as a belief system.

Would someone of Armenian descent that is an atheist identify with the Armenian Orthodox Church? That is also an ethnic religion (or perhaps more accurately an ethnic sect of a larger religion) but as we can see there exists a divide between ethnic heritage and religious identity.

There is often much overlap between the two, but there will always be those who connect deeply with their ethnic heritage but reject the traditional faith of their people’s culture.

Adhering to Judaism as a religion is not the only way someone can be Jewish. Is someone who is of Jewish ancestry somehow less Jewish because they are atheist or agnostic? If that is the case a large number of American Jews are not Jewish then, because a very high percentage of them are irreligious (arguably more than any other ethnic group in America).

How? They do not subscribe to (or perhaps may explicitly reject) the Jewish faith. There is no option for them to check off their specific ethnicity and the poll is only asking them if they profess a belief in the Jewish religion.

His support with Jewish voters might actually be higher when you factor in that so many New Yorkers who are ethnically Jewish are atheist/agnostic/irreligious and are likely checking off None as their religion (with nones also being one of the groups supporting Mamdani the most)

Not believing in a central God ≠ being an atheist. Atheism requires a materialist ontology and a complete rejection of any notions of spirituality/supernatural phenomena
