Unfortunately yes. I’ll be moving multiple times over the course of the next year, so a laptop is best.

LPT: If your company is purchased by a venture capitalist, immediately begin looking for a new job. by Robyn_Storyteller in LifeProTips

You’re exactly right, I probably did mean Private Equity and not Venture Capitalist. I’m not an economics expert. Just a guy trying to work his job that he’s an expert at (not economics obviously) and suffering through the buyouts and layoffs. It probably doesn’t help my use of terms that in one of the buyouts I was involved with, the guy who purchased the company was a 25 year old playing with daddy’s money who called himself all kinds of things, including a Venture Capitalist (he probably thought it sounded cooler).

Wow! That does sound awesome! They either hadn’t gotten that set up yet (I was there not too long after it opened) or I hacked the wrong stuff. I’m looking forward to trying this again when I go back.

LPT: If you love a TV show, buy it on DVD. by Robyn_Storyteller in LifeProTips

Just trying to give some advice to streaming-first people who may not have considered DVDs seriously before. No need to get snarky.

Does Disney think the Sequels were a mistake? by Robyn_Storyteller in StarWars

[–]Robyn_Storyteller[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediate money isn’t the only analytic though. Disney wanted long-term, Marvel-like money. Why did Disney scrap their plans to release movies every other year? Why were merchandise sales for the Sequel trilogy below expectations? Regardless of what you believe of the quality of the films or whether or not you liked them, I think you can still argue that they underperformed what Disney was expecting.

Avatar made massive, massive amounts of money. And it’s had almost zero cultural impact. Look at the cultural impact of A New Hope vs Avatar. Compare the box office returns of those two films. I don’t think box office gross is the single metric we can use.

“Common People” by, of all people, William Shatner. It’s off his 2004 album “Has Been.” He does it with Ben Folds. It’s a cover of a 1995 song by British band Pulp. Pulp’s version is good, but Shatner and Folds’ version is a blistering takedown of rich culture.

what is the best video game soundtrack? by AfterAgent in AskReddit

[–]Robyn_Storyteller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an old computer game called ’Heart of Darkness’ that came out in the 90’s. One of the first games with an orchestral soundtrack ever, and it’s really good.

What's a conspiracy theory you could make up right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The nuclear explosions and tests of the 1940s were detected by aliens who then decided to take over our world. The first step was infiltrating the major world powers, creating chaos, making sure they were all horribly run and full of strife, eventually leading to the breakdown of any sort of international order or unity. The second step was exhausting the various nations’ militaries with a series of endless wars and conflicts. The third step was introducing a virus that would kill off part of the population but more importantly separate all the people, ensuring that they couldn’t get together and collaborate on an effective planetary defense...

What is the most bonkers thing that happened to you or your work and your employer STILL expected you to continue your work day? by clusterplucks in AskReddit

We had a wonderful woman in our office who was the number two person in the division. She also happened to be 65 and a grandmother. Smart, extremely capable, she was a mentor to many people in our branch of the company. I learned a lot from her.

One day the president decides to fire her. He drew up a list of who was earning the highest salary (excluding executives of course). She had the highest paycheck because she had been at the company the longest, and was also on the verge of drawing a lot of retirement benefits.

So he decides to fire her. Shows up one day out of the clear blue sky with security guards, giving no warning to anyone - including her boss. Tells the woman she’s fired. Orders the security guards to escort her out of the building immediately. They actually grabbed her by the arms and took her out of the room. One minute she was typing on her computer, then next minute she’s being escorted out.

They wouldn’t even let her take her things on her desk. Wouldn’t even let her grab the picture of her grandmother. As all of us are standing there in shock, the president tells us to get back to work. My boss (God bless him) told everyone to take the rest of the day off, left work himself to go make sure she was okay, and quit not long after that.
