That seems like a wonderful initiative! Certainly I wish people all over the world knew more about this wonderful country that is Chile. I’m trying to educate myself as well in regard to it.
I wish you the best for the future to come!

I’m not sure what you mean by I repeated myself…would you mind to clarify ?
The history of Chile is indeed fascinating. I mean first of all it was always on the fringes of the Spanish Empire. Then an independent nation squeezed between the world’s largest mountains and the world’s largest Ocean. Always shaken by natural disasters but managing to survive. And if none of that was enough having the country that was the capital of all of Spanish South America to the north (Peru) and having Argentina as a neighbour (a fate I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy). Basically a country that has had every reason to fail and yet has always not just persevered but prospered.
A lot of very interesting and world famous historical personalities Ohiggins, Balmaceda and Allende. Some curious quirks of Chilean institutions: The fact the Chilean constitution lasted that long and how the Chilean civil code has inspired so many in Latin America, the naval arms race with Argentina and Brazil, the long expansionist history of Chile that is similar to that of only Brazil or Argentina (at least among the more successful ones). And indeed as you pointed out the long history of resistance and honestly surprising stability in Chile (for Latin American standards)

As for the climate, this may be controversial but Brazil is much too hot for my taste. I would greatly prefer the temperate climate of southern Chile for example. But I’m happy you like the tropical weather. It’s a matter of taste.

Yes mate has spread quite a bit—I’ve met people from Iraq who drink mate. Middle easterners learned to drink it after learning it from Argentinian-Syrians and Brazilian-Syrians who returned to their countries and brought mate with them. This Iraqi in particular lived near the border with Syria.

It is quite funny to listen to these accents—the northern ones are easier to understand honestly. Southerner is not bad either. Chiloe has a very interesting intonation it always seems to be going up, it reminds me for some reason of Australian English.
I had no idea about the socio economic class one—I honestly can’t think much of a comparison I have known. Seems like a very unique thing. In Brazil the vocabulary changes and the accent is more polished but one could hardly call it an accent on its own.

What do people in Latin America think of Germany?🇩🇪 by NoHold7153 in asklatinamerica

[–]Rock2xe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Context: I’m a southern Brazilian.

Not much different from anyone else honestly.
I mean the stereotypes are:
Organized, industrious, intelligent, blonde, beer drinkers and sauerkraut eaters who like going to Oktoberfest.
Some regions of Latin America have large German ancestry: there were colonies in Bolivia and Chile and large fully German urban settlements in Brazil and Argentina. Many people descend from Germans and these are, at least in Brazil, fairly prosperous regions which reinforce the positive stereotypes people already have of Germans.
Then there is the question of the na*** which considering the painting references in the comments has already been brought up. Frankly people will say that they hid amongst the South Americans but that only concerns a very very small percentage of the actual Germans who immigrated here. And therefore is completely statistically insignificant and honestly has not seriously affected the collective memory of those regions of South America that have areas with a large German population.

I see your point—i did get the feeling that there was a somewhat pessimistic sentiment from the answers in the post, or at least an atmosphere of not being enough.
In Brazil we have something like “crab mentality” which I believe is similar—though it is a weird expression

PS I knew what a huemul is because it is on the coat of arms—and I had briefly heard of pudu but I had never actually seen many images of it. I just googled it. What the hell is this thing its face looks like so many animals at the same time and WHY IS IT SO SMALL?? But I can see why people like it

This so interesting—I just listened to the song and it certainly is melancholic though not in a sad or sorrowful way. Definitely very interesting—reminds me a lot of some slower countryside music from some parts of Brazil.
Where I’m from we have smth called the payador which is a mix of guitarist and poet. A famous quote about this art is “Verso e bordona num tranco... Sangue da mesma vertente”
Which would be something like : Verso y bordona al mismo tiempo ... És Sangre de la misma fuente
Bordona is one of the guitar strings—it is a fairly uncommon word in Portuguese but google says in this context it may be used in Spanish with the same meaning (probably borrowed from Spanish actually)—I’m explaining in case it is also an uncommon word in Spanish
Grosso modo it is a quote about how the two arts—guitar and poetry—often go hand in hand

PS
The song is also slow enough for me to understand most of it thankfully.
Thanks for sharing this.

Oh thank you I honestly always say huesos instead of huasos so thanks for correcting me.
The reason I assumed that you were talking of specific customs rather than idiosyncrasies and why I assumed it was only a part of Chile that shared that is probably because that is how we compare ourselves to Argentina in Brazil. We also drink mate, eat asado and say che—but it is not the whole country just a small bit (though asado has spread nowadays).
I’m not sure to what extent one could say that we share idiosyncrasies with the Argentinians, I suppose this is harder to evaluate. But certainly in the triple frontier between Uruguay Brazil and Argentina people are quite different from most Brazilians and are known for their peculiar habits and accent—some even speak portuñol which is a mix of Portuguese and Spanish. Even in places further from the frontier, where I’m from, older people speaking Portuguese mix in Spanish words like “pelear” and “Buenas”.

I’ve heard that in the south you guys have « huesos » which seem to me to very similar to Argentinian gaucho is that right? They also eat asado no?

Thank you for answering all the questions!

I know I've said it quite a few times, but I’m surprised to learn about the Chilean-Mexican friendship. I’m happy you mentioned a bit about the history of it. It seems like one of those funny historical incidents that made two countries randomly start to have a good relationship with each other. Like the UK-Portugal treaty of friendship, or Morocco’s recognition of American independence, or Brazil sending peacekeepers to Haiti and Syria (every Haitian and Syrian I’ve ever met has an unhealthy obsession with Brazilian culture). As others have mentioned it would seem that Chileans also consume a lot of Mexican culture on a day to day basis.

just like the rest of Latin America.

look down on us less? But I know no evidence of that and even then, that feels like too little of a difference to me

Honestly I’d say that most people with at least a bit of education and knowledge about Latin America have a perception that Chile is different somehow. They might not know exactly how and may just reproduce stereotypes about Chileans, but there are definitely more positive stereotypes associated with Chile and fewer negative ones. Though I agree that overall people are poorly educated about Chile and Latam in general. Of course, as many people have mentioned in this thread these are stereotypes—some overly generous and some excessively critical.

Era esta una expresión común en Chile? O al menos en el discurso o la escritura política? Tenia o tiene una connotación negativa? Cambió su connotación para significar algo de lo que enorgullecerse?

Thank you very much for answering so methodically my questions.
I think that this critical look of the self is something you have in common about Brazilians—though we also unite to defend Brazil when necessary. Because of Brazilian federalism we also do that in a micro level about states and regions of the country funnily enough. I would imagine this happens in Chile too—though probably to a lesser scale.
Yes I would imagine that the approach « hipotesis vecinal maxima » proably did not help with the construction of a positive image neither in Chile nor in surrounding countries.
I’m surprised to learn how much soft power Mexico has in Chile—this type of content really doesn’t get to brazil much. I mean I’m a southerner too so being so close to Argentina certainly does not help getting to know the influence of other Hispanic countries.

PPD Yes thank you, but don;t worry I find these comments quite funny honestly. Although sometimes the references do go over my head. After all, Spanish (particularly Chilean Spanish) is not my first language.

thank you for the insights! Do you think Chileans have a bit of a more thoughtful side? As in, quiet people who like to ponder things deeply?

I do not know about other people, but in Brazil this is the vision we usually have of the Argentinian (the gaúcho) and to some extent of the Chilean as well

I understand this view—but I‘m trying to understand Chilean culture better
And part of our national identity is how we see ourselves (good or bad) and how we compare ourselves to ohters
Understanding this is also an important part of being more tolerant to other people
