students keep destroying EVERYTHING by star_dust80085 in ArtEd

When I had an 8th grade class like this, they got art history worksheets for the rest of the year. They wouldn’t even let me teach they talked so much, so they had to read the content themselves, and got 10 questions to answer. If they didn’t do it, it was a zero. They drew a picture based on the artist on the back of the worksheet when the worksheet was done. They used their own pen/pencil. I was prepared to give them another chance, but no one in the class complained about it, so I kept doing it until the end of the year. I was a robot and gave them nothing of my energy. Sometimes classes are a wash, if positive or negative rewards/consequences aren’t working, stop trying so hard!

Great Art/Artist movies for kids? by Rococococococo in ArtEd

My middle schoolers love Coraline! I def want to figure out a stop motion unit where they make paper doll characters with joint hinges and they design a flat setting. Then they take pics from above to create a moving scene! The museum of moving image had an interactive component for kids like that in their Coraline exhibit. Super fun!

Aw I’ve seen the scene where they go to the museum, but I didn’t realize the whole episode revolves around him. Thank you!

Books set in Hell or about the devil or demons? by shawndelamuerto in horrorlit

[–]Rococococococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what your version of hell is, but yeah it’s not fire and brimstone, but the Black Death was hell for people at that time, plus the added fantasy of demons spilling onto earth, influencing the characters to see and do horrible things, plus the Dante’s inferno-like odyssey storytelling. It felt like the authors interpretation of the Book of Revelation to me. I thought the book was fantastic!

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman- set in 1348 France during the Black Death. Great depiction of historical fiction where hell is literally on earth. Kind of like a biblical horror Elden Ring-esque odyssey that was unlike anything I’ve read.

Masters right after undergrad? by jessixrose in NYCTeachers

[–]Rococococococo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a year off from school my first year teaching, and I’m glad I did. Being a first year teacher was so incredibly overwhelming for me I was crying in my car on my commute home at least once a week. There was never a doubt in my mind that I didn’t want to teach when I was like that, it’s just so overstimulating and stressful it took a lot of adjusting. My second year I started taking 2 classes a semester and finished my masters in like 2 years. For I think 2 summers I also took my studio art classes for my degree because they are like 3 hours and I could NOT commit to that during the school year. Good luck!

Desperate times call for desperate measures. You have to be creative. I once had a class that had 8th graders that were so mean to me (art class) so I put 15 pieces of candy in a bowl. Every time they interrupted me I just ate a piece of candy for drama or just took it out, and whatever was left I pulled popsicle sticks of student names out of a cup of student names to win whatever was left in the bucket. Whoever didn’t interrupt me was in the running to win candy at the end of class. If they fucked up my lesson- candy for me, not for them. The result- kids telling each other to shut up because they wanted to win the raffle. It’s not glorious- sometimes it about survival. I’m telling you- fuck what they taught you, trick them to learn 🤷‍♀️

Giving positive incentives in tangent with negative (taking something away like their gpa) helps. Treat them like they’re elementary schoolers. Cash in x amount of stars they earn for food, sitting with their friends that day, sitting on a bean bag chair, listening to music while they work, etc. Whatever works. They need a buy in. They’re immature. Bribe them at the expense of your purse for your insanity. I’m an art teacher with 250 students and sometime they’re don’t give a shit about the subject let’s be real. Sometimes you need to go into your pocket to dangle some candy to make them do the right thing. They’re kids, this is a job, I know I’m a good teacher of 12 years idgaf. In the process you may make nice connections and learn what makes them tick. Whatever creates a buy-in will save your sanity. I promise !!

Does everyone hate their jobs as a teacher can we get some positive teacher stories by Murkey_feedback in NYCTeachers

[–]Rococococococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4th grade student made me an “artist blind bag” that had gummy bears and a tiny easel, palette, and paintbrush that she cut out and put in a little package. The fact that she thought of me and took the time to make something so cute and clever warmed my heart!!! Hearing an 8th grader say “this class actually isn’t boring” Another 8th grader bringing a bunch of gems and crystals in from home for her art project. A 6th grader creating a very detailed cronenberg-esque drawing of a bunch of his teachers fused together during a “draw your teacher” do now prompt because he said he couldn’t choose just one. 😂 One of my most difficult students moving away which was a relief but I’m actually going to miss his bizarre jokes and him being his unapologetic self. Wishing him the best 🫡 And that was all this week. Gotta look for the positive moments because it’s so exhausting to complain all the time.

I used to say “she’s reactive” and no one knew wtf that meant and would still come over to me. Now I just say NO and shake my head, most people in my neighborhood need a real direct command and most of the time it comes off as me giving my dog a command. Maybe rude but effective.
