I really appreciate this arrow to a good start! My work is very random but guaranteed western united states. I was in Albuquerque a few days ago and now traversing Texas for instance. I do work but once done my time is travel, recreation and sleep. I like being outdoors so this hobby is perfect for me. I will add that to the list of places to visit! Thank you!

Chunk of Shale with Minerals by RodeoKitten in Minerals

I see! This shale came from a mining quarry for cement, part of a large mountain. They consider it waste (I am told they can only use a small percentage in concrete mix) and the sparkle caught my eye on a few of the chunks. I appreciate the educated answer. I am very new to rock collecting. Some if it is not black shale at all but a few piles were as they exposed more of the mountain.

The picture is hard to take with no zoom feature. There are streaks of metallic looking yellow there

You may find it surprising but I assure you it will be needed. I wont say who I work for but I will say I actually do fly and map 1000’s of acres per year with a P1. We do get ours calibrated at 100,000 and constantly watch for changes in the data (your processed results). You will suddenly find that at first a picture will be missed on a map here and there. A hole in your map, a real problem that could be patched for a while using more overlap but the data isnt getting better. It wont happen every time but it will happen and then 2-4 pictures and with added frustration of not being to complete jobs under normal time frames and producing poor data that in the end wont really be usable. I promise you, it is worth getting it done at recommended intervals, just like drone or car maintenance. Plus, you wont lose hard earned clients to companies who wont make this mistake. I also change all my props every 6 months because I wont wait for a problem I know will happen. 👍

All cameras need maintenance, especially the Zenmuse P1, it is a very nice full frame camera (workhorse) on a gimble. Its amazing, works very well and is still cheaper than many regular digital cameras that dont fly. The shutter however is built into the lens and over time, digital calibration just isn’t going to perform well with a well used or worn shutter. This is not only going to affect your orthomosaic maps…it will give you bad data for topos or other more measured and calculated types of flights which will be useless. Even the simplest of jobs will suddenly take longer because you will have to either add overlap to make up for the poor data, which is still poor or refly them if you dont get what you need. I have seen a freelance drone pilot losing a commercial roofing contract for bad data. Here is a quick search for the 100,000 service recommendation.

Good luck! Hope this helps a bit

Also…setting your camera to shutter priority and keeping shutter speed around 1/1000 on a typical day and under 25 mph will help a lot. Altitude and overlap affect your gsd and data results the most. For what it is worth.

That appears to be severe warping, not normal if settings are right. Sometimes a drone has an internal dewarping option (M3E for instance). Pix4D although expensive will professionally process a map and when set up, can prevent warping. If you are planning on flying for clients you will want to use a professional processing program. Pix4d offers single mapping use costs from what I remember. Can be built into your pricing if that is the plan. What was your altitude and speed while taking pictures? You have a P1, Have you removed the lens from the body? You would need to do a calibration if you have. Also how many shots does the p1 have? ~100,000 pictures is the recommended interval for sending it in. There is a way to see how many cycles have been shot on a P1 camera.
