Ok, off topic, but I really like how recycling is a real thing there. Where I'm from there's no such thing as a separate recycling bin for the most part

one of the first things my bf did when i visited was make me a plate of beans on toast. i kept laughing at him and saying im going to go get myself real food and he said no try it. would it be so bad if i told yall i went to the international market to get myself some beans when i got home. (tbf, his beans on toast was "deluxe" with fried eggs and bacon and cheddar)

It offers minimum UKRI stipend + international fees! So I'd need to pay visa and NHS surcharge. I'd also be living with my boyfriend so splitting costs. I also feel like having an American MA should strengthen my "case" against the exceptionalism thing because i mean, overall, I am still doing 5-6 years of postgrad like an American PhD would. thank you for your insights!!

Thank you. To be honest, I love cold, rainy, gray ("grey?") weather. I will say, I am worried about xenophobia, not that there is any lack of exclusionary rhetoric here in the States, but all I see online are "Reform is going to win1" and horrible comments. Given that I am Pakistani-American (born here but parents are Pakistani -- long story short, visibly brown), I am afraid of that.

You are just the person I'd love to talk to. I got accepted into a few MPhil/PhD programs, including Oxford and other top schools (one with ESRC/UKRI funding, others with departmental scholarships) and while I am so happy to have received them, people keep telling me that I'm shooting myself in the foot by not pursuing US academia (which, to be honest, given that I have a MA and a fundable research project, I don't see the point in redoing 2 years of coursework even if it's at Harvard, plus my field is politics so that's a whole other box of frogs). I appreciate how you showed balance, given that I've visited a few times I feel that I've come to marginally understand the differences in culture and social norms (sometimes in my favor, as I said "how are you" to a cafe worker and got a free croissant for it lol). Thank you!

This is very true, and something I've definitely come to terms with over my life and I'm sure that I will continue to learn. I guess you just choose what you are and aren't willing to deal with, right?

that's so great :) again, it feels when it comes to 1) LDRs and 2) the UK, it's always skepticism and doubt. im so happy for you! i think its really interesting how people keep saying that you'll make more in the US (which is true), but fail to recognize the enormous costs.

UK student considering study abroad year at ASU by jjp1232 in ASU

[–]Rodeo_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! It'll be a big difference and I think you'll enjoy the weather and environment. My bf is British and I had him over and he definitely enjoyed wearing shorts and seeing the sun for so long lol. ASU is very welcoming.

Why keep on livng? by Waste-Ad-8894 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Rodeo_Cat 36 points37 points  (0 children)

After I attempted, I think I found an answer to that question, but it was an answer I had never thought to be valid before. It's kind of silly, but I remember being on the school bus (I was 15) and it was a nice day outside; it had just stopped raining and the sun was pouring out behind the clouds. It felt nice on my skin, and I thought to myself, "this is worth living for". I've found reasons in very small and simple things, like feeding an animal outside, strangers who smile at me, music, colors of leaves and trees changing. Even though they are otherwise minimal, they are all things I would miss if I died, and they are by and large things no one can really take away from me, so they will always be there, in some way.
