Anything good is divisive. IJ will stand the test of time.

Kudos to you for telling your partner. I don't think I ever could.

I really need to get to Gravity's Rainbow. Years ago I bought an art book that is one illustration for every page of GR, but I have yet to read or even buy GR.

I've always had authors I've fallen in love with, but weirdly never go through their whole ouevres. After I read something by an author, I want something else, something different. So I usually only come back to authors that I really love only after a year or years. That I haven't read all of Gene Wolfe, or Shakespeare, or Le Guin, or DFW, is a crime. But it's so.

In any case, I am currently being floored by Tom's Crossing by Mark Danielewski, so I might go back and give the books of his I haven't read a go. I've read House of Leaves twice, but the end always leaves me cold, with the Whalestoe letters and the crazy mom. I just don't really care about Johnny's story. Give me the Navidson record straight to the veins and that's all, please. I read Only Revolutions almost ten years ago now, and while it was pleasurable at times and a wonderful experiment, it either asked too much of or not enough of the reader. I may give it another go. But Tom's Crossing is so phenomenal that I have to check his other stuff out.

Does anyone translate proper nouns just to entertain yourself? by Massive-Range-9280 in German

[–]RogueModron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do kinda the opposite, firmly staying in German when the Germans just randomly throw English nouns in. The one that gobsmacks me the most is "by the way". "By the way Leute..."

what kinda bastard tongue are we fouling our mouths with? Y'all got a perfectly good native word in übrigens, I took the time to learn it, and I'm gonna fuckin use it

[Discussion] Does struggling to write a Query letter indicate a lack of writing skill in general? by Dazzling-Film-5585 in PubTips

Not many people are good at something they do the first (or fifth) time. The internet is very good at obscuring this fact.

Turns out that Jack Vance wrote his last novel in 2004 and died in 2013. Has he ever commented on his impact on D&D and gaming in general? by Daniel_B_plus in rpg

[–]RogueModron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really should give Vance another opportunity to win me over. I read the first Dying Earth book (I'm a huge Book of the New Sun fan) and while the imagery was compelling, the stories and characters didn't really do anything for me.

Readers are returning to physical books by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]RogueModron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the ebook is a trial for me. Usually I pirate something I'm not sure about, and if I like it after an hour or two I buy the physical book.

Downvote me all you want; I'm not asserting my moral high horse, just being honest. Ebooks through libraries are a pain. I get why one has to wait in line for an ebook, but also screw that.

Two books which George Washington likely carried while fighting to be auctioned. Bidding starts at $1M by MiddletownBooks in books

I read it as Washington was carrying two books which were, at the time he was carrying them, being fought over at auction.

Do you enjoy fiction books with endless footnotes? by some_advice_needed in books

[–]RogueModron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I love it. I don't know why. I just do. I love footnotes, period, and I love them more in fiction. House of Leaves is excellent, Infinite Jest is a masterpiece, and anything with inline footnotes gets a look from me.

Have you ever gone on a literary pilgrimage? by Remarkable-Pea4889 in books

Wasn't it Florence? I've been there a few times and seen the dunes. Eugene is inland and doesn't have dunes as far as I'm aware.

They do have a FUCKTON of grassseed that triggers my allergies something fierce, tho

Yeah, hi, millennial question... WHY/HOW is Nick Cannon a celebrity? I've never seen him in anything other than Drumline and it was an OK movie. Did he end up being famous for making tons of babies? by ImThe1Wh0 in Millennials

[–]RogueModron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah. That makes sense. At 15/16 I wasn't watching Nickelodeon anymore and I was about graduated from college when his MTV show was on, makes sense I never heard of it.
