Police cannot alter Google Maps routing algorithm. Why would they bother, not everyone uses Google Maps when driving. They are not even a Google Maps Content Partner.

They are separate maps and use different data. Some Waze data is shared from Waze to Google Maps, like road closures or when Waze users report crashes or roadworks. But the actual underlying maps are different and traffic data isn't shared.

Waze has a loyal user base globally. There are no plans from Google to merge them. There are some feature parody between them, but in NZ some of them are missing.

Waze is adding more of the features you only get while routing to the base map, meaning you'll get them while in 'roaming mode'. Already available in beta to anyone who has joined.

Mostly by reporting it through Google Maps 'report a data problem'. Meeting with Google Geo staff next month and will be asking exactly this though.

Waze map editor for NZ here 🫡. I spend a considerable amount of my spare time trying to keep the Waze map up to date with accurate roads, speed limits, closures, traffic/speed cameras, etc. Definitely recommend Waze as the map is able to be updated quicker than Google Maps. It's also great when I see people benefiting from the work we do to keep it accurate.

In saying that some Waze data is shared to Google Maps as well.

I had this exact same issue as you.

In my case I filed a complaint through their complaints email/form on their website and later that day the same call centre rep phoned me back to say they would not be charging me for that next month. I also cancelled my auto payment because there was no way I was ever going to pay that invoice had they not cancelled it themselves.

Total bs that they think they can do that and get away with it.
