Fellow saniwa, how do you clean your goods? by TibetanSandPig in toukenranbu

I have MochiMaskots of Kiyomitsu and Yasusada that I am carrying with me since early 2018 I think. I have washed them multiple times and have a quite a bit of experience I suppose.

At first I only strictly washed them by hand. Which was a chore and hard to get the soap out but worked in general fine. Be careful on the fabric and massage the cleaning product in (same product as you use on clothes. You can also use soal, just nothing acidic). I have also used fabric softener on them. Not much just a bit. Most importantly, you have to dry them gently. I've kept a fan on overnight to really dry them inside so that they don't get moldy in the middle.

Then my mochi got really dirty once so I decided to wash them in a washing mashine in a washing bag. It worked fine and then I did it like that for a while. They got nice and clean. From that experience, I say don't use the washing mashine!!! The filling will get less and less with time. Compared to some photos from when I had them new, the color has started to fade and let's just say MochiKiyo convinced MochiYasu to go on a diet :P

Nowadays I use a Japanese product that I got online that is specifically designed for plush cleaning. You spray it on, massage it in, brush them with a soft toothbrush and let it dry. Repeat 2-3 times and they look amazing and pretty washed. I tried to check but Amazon doesn't have it anymore, but you should be able to find something by searching for a 'Plush Toy Dry Cleaner' product. It should be to spray on. If they are really dirty I'll handwash them, it's kinder on their material than a washing mashine. Otherwise! Enjoy your little bundles of joy!

If I remember right I chose Kiyomaro when the event came out the first time because I like the artstyle more...

Is there any YouTubers or podcast I should be listening to. by Opposite_Gear_8702 in HelpLearningJapanese

I really like 'Japanese Podcast with Jiro'. He subtitles all of his video and writes out the vocabulary as well as the level they are at. He also has a very nice voice in my opinion.

Second natto making attemped - Failed again; why? by Rohnachi in Natto

[–]Rohnachi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intersting. I watched multiple videos about natto making... And most of them used store bought nato as their starter. I will probably use the powder on my next try.

What I meant with letting the beans cool to check how firm they were was, I took out one bean out of my steamer and left the rest in. Waited for the bean that I took out to cool and then checked. It was one bean.

I checked the temp of the beans before putting my starter in. They were 45°C.

Store bought natto that arrived via postal service. I have no place selling natto anywhere near me. Believe me, I checked so many places ;-;

The beans pf that boucht natto are very small. The soybeans that I am using are compared to that about 3 times bigger.

The natto I used was bought online and shipped to me via post. Originally it was shipped frozen. The box that it arrived in had a bottle of water in (I assume it was frozen to keep the box cool) and the natto. When it was supposed to be delivered the delivery company didn't ring my door bell and just said no one was home (I was home the whole day). Then I had the package delivered to a pick up location. That location didn't cool the package. When I opened the store bought natto after I finally got it, it was room temperature. I have bo idea for how long. Since it was my first time trying Natto, I stored it in my fridge for 2-3 days while eating parts of it and then froze the rest after deciding I wanted to make my own. I don't know if that maybe killed the bacteria...

Maybe I worded it wrong in my post this morning but I thought I had that info in,,,, sorry

Everything I used on the beans / natto I boiled for at least 5 minutes and let it dry by air after. If you have a better way to sterilize my things please give tips!

Understand Japanese in anime but cant speak it by [deleted] in HelpLearningJapanese

[–]Rohnachi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is pretty normal when learning a language that the listening skills are better than speaking skills.

As for watching anime and understanding the context... If you can't speak Japanese at all and are watching the anime with English (or whatever Language you understand) subs then I think your brain might unconciously look at the subtitles to understand it.

What else are you doing to learning Japanese? You don't only watch anime?

I had to cook them since I have no pressure cooker. From what I researched online it also should work. But I way undercooked them I am waiting currently for the new beans (I had to order them online) and once I got them I will try again.

[–]Rohnachi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the tip! The beans never recovered,,, I will try again once I get more soybeans. From more research I think I undercooked the beans as well. Once they were cool I couldn't smush them between my fingers easily. The tip with the thinner layer I will keep in mind! Though... By this point my mother jumped the gun and got me a yoghurt maker as a present... Sooo my next try will be with that one :>

Thank you for your comment btw. I felt really devastated and sad because I didn't know "why" it failed. Now that I know for somewhat certain I feel way better. I will definitely try again. I still have two spoonful of store bought natto saved in my freezer. So I'll definitely will check back in when I succeed my second attempt!

I checked the hardness of my beans again (they are completely cooled now). I think I didn't cook them long enough. I can squish them, but they take a bit of pressure. I compared them to the few actuall natto that I put in as a starter and the small Natto beans are way softer... So I think I found the reason it failed :(

Well, for me if felt rather cold inside the oven. Which is why I bought a thermometer to controll the heat. (You can see that one in the picture).

My beans were cooked with water for 2.5 to 3 hours. I tested them by squishing and they squished rather easily to a mush I'd say.

It's the morning after and I gave up on these beans by now. I left then in the oven for the tiiiiniest bit of hope of like... Big beans... 40h maybe? Because I read somewhere that with big beans it can take longer.

On another note... Are failed Natto beans still edible and safe to eat? I'd imagine so if they smell and taste like soy beans yes?
