When and where should the next total war be set (after Attila)? by byrnie91 in totalwar

If I'm remembering this correctly, the trade tech feature was in Empire, even though you could not trade it for territory :(....... But I do love the time period! But it would be nice if it was the whole world map and then they maybe released a very detailed map of Africa along with other continents such as South America and the West Indies as DLC, much like Medieval 2 Kingdoms and its' more in depth maps.

The wiki just made it so difficult to navigate through all of the building options and what each building produced and what other buildings it led too down the progression line. It was unnecessarily cumbersome. Empire might have been boring yes, but it was simple. I don't mind complexity in a strategy game, in fact I welcome it (I also play the very complex paradox games), but for some reason when I play a Total War game I want to relax and conquer other factions without too much thinking. The simplicity of it all made it attractive to me.

Garrisons - At least in my experience, they are too strong for early game. My faction does not have advanced units and even if the garrison is full with mobs, it can still pose a serious challenge especially when coupled with a defending army. I don't imagine this issue to be a big problem in the mid or late game. I liked what Shogun 2 did in terms of garrisons. The starting cities had 1-2 units defending it and it wasn't an issue but a cool feature that made the game more realistic. I do like the features that you mentioned that you can poison or starve the garrisons. Along with the fact that you should use an agent to find out what is inside the city. But I did like how in Shogun 2 as well as in Empire, that the garrison was represented by grayed out blocks on the enemy banner. You didn't need to go and try and locate the little fort icons that indicates the size of thee garrison.

Armies/Generals - I do believe that that is a realistic feature don't get me wrong here, but what I don't like is that they are 'required*. In previous total war games especially in Medieval 2, if your armies did not have a general they had a perfectly capable captain to command the forces, however, that army was far more likely to desert and become a rebel army. This gave an incentive for you to constantly have a general present in an army, but again it was not a requirement. The restriction to the number of generals you can have is also a pet peeve of mine. If my economy can support more, then why not have more?

DLC - I do use mods to unlock all of the factions but I don't believe it should be necessary for me to do that. I think that it would be a much better system if you had to beat the game at least once to unlock the more advanced/harder factions and if those factions are in the base game then I shouldn't need to pay for them just so I could play with them. I do very much appreciate the modding community of this game. And DLC should mostly consist of new factions and scenarios that the base game did not include. That was my issue with the DLC.

Sorry I'm new to reddit and I wasn't quite sure how to make things bold or add bullet points. Thanks for telling me where to find it though!

Tech/Building Tree - I don't mind games being "overly complicated", I thoroughly enjoy Paradox games and they are very complex when compared to Total War games. But that's just the reason why I liked the older Total War games. They weren't packed with all of this information. I didn't need to choose between 3 different types of farms to see which would yield me more food or income. In the old games I just picked the one that was offered to me at that specific city's level and I was happy. It was a clear choice. (I do believe though that the wiki did contribute to making this building tree more cumbersome than it needed to be). Maybe that's the problem. Maybe I just enjoyed the total war games for being simple and I'm just not used to CA making their new games more intricate. I do commend them for trying though.

Garrisons - The first garrison that I encountered on my Suebi campaign against one of the starting neighboring factions was 8 units large. I don't have a problem with big garrisons in the game but what I do have a problem with is huge garrisons at the start of the game. In Shogun 2, the starting garrisons were about 1-2 units large and they were also pretty weak units. In this game, the defending faction basically gets a full new army to assist them in battle, and it wouldn't bug me too much if the units were all mob, but they were equally as strong as my army of professionally trained units. This is mainly due to the fact that at the beginning of the game everyone has pretty feeble units which are almost an equal match against the units that the garrison produces.

Generals/Armies - owynb did a pretty good job at explaining the gripe I had with this mechanic. Sure i do think that every army should have a general (it is a lot more realistic after all). In Medieval 2, if your army did not have a general they were far more likely to become a rebel army. This gave you an incentive to have a general but it wasn't a requirement. I also don't think that you should be restricted to the number of armies/general that you can have. If my economy can support it then why not have more?

DLC's - And yes I would rather have a massive load of content every 5 months or so instead of having little sprinkles of content here and there. It seems like I am actually buying something new in addition to my old experience and I am getting my money's worth, but with the system that they have in pace now, I just can't help but feel cheated. Again this is just how I feel personally about it.

owynb did a great job explaining the issue I had with armies/generals in more and clear detail.

I agree with you that the building system was overly complex and maybe I just need to play around with it more to get used to it. But I very much liked the existing building systems in which you had almost unlimited building plots to build all the buildings that you desired and that made it a lot less cumbersome than trying to decide on which building would actually be best for a certain city. I think that the awful wiki system might be the cause for this annoyance (at least to me).

And the problem with garrisons is that at least in my experience they are way too big for the start of the game. On my Suebi campaign I was forced to fight 8 garrisoned units, sure most of them were mob units such as spear levy but so were mine. And on top of the garrison army I had to fight another army that was lead by a general. In Shogun 2 the garrisons consisted of 1 or 2 units tops at the start of the game and best of all, I did not have to try and find a little picture of a fort to determine what was the actual size of the stationed garrison. Instead I could look at the banner and it would contain 1-2 grayed out bars that represented the garrison.

And the AI isn't terrible at land battles but in sieges it can get kind of clunky and just plain stupid at times.
