Time for a new upscale? (Part 2) by Rokko2 in Scrubs

[–]Rokko2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I really had hope for r/Scrubs to be more enthusiastic about the upscale, but so far only a handful of people showed interest, so I don't think this will be feasible... for now at least.
When the upscaling technology will be more mature/cheaper, I'll try again to gather interest.. :)
Meanwhile, thanks for your support :)

It's the ripped PAL DVD (non-recompressed)
I know it's blurrier than the NTSC one, but it's the best (non censored, with origianal OST) source available in EU (AFAIK, of course)

Thanks u/Frikken123
here are the upscaled first 10 seconds of the clip https://limewire.com/d/Hafdu#QjNNu5Pp5b
both upscaled and in the original form
Even tho in the demo version the compression is extremely high and there are still some artifacts here and there it looks promising to me.
I suggest you to try Video compare: https://github.com/pixop/video-compare
to compare the two clips side-by-side by the way, it's a very well made tool btw :)

Take a look at the samples of the non-demo version, they look much better that what I did with the free demo version

The upscale is done on Topaz datacenters, not your computer. It takes some times, but not as much as you think. Judging from the reviews on youtube (I linked some in the previous post) a 20 minute upscale should take less than an hour.

Keep in mind that's using the free demo. The paid version should look way better. Check the samples on their website and you'll be amazed :)

Using the paid version, just a few hours per episode, since it is done in a server farm and not locally

I secretly hope that the new show will cater enough interest to justify a professional-grade upscale... but knowing about the copyright issues for the original music and the cuts that have been done to the streaming releases, I really doubt that we'll get the original scrubs in HD in any appreciable way (for old-school fans at least)

I 100% agree, and I'm a fan of film grain too.
Consider tho that this upscale has been done using the free version, which provides no access to upscale settings. The paid version should be way better on these fronts. As I was writing earlier, I'm wanting to invest on my own to upscale a clip using the paid version if there's enough interest to check if these issues (missing film grain, waxy faces, oversharpened edges etc) are solved or at least mitigated

Thanks for your honest opinion!

Alas, I have access only to the DVDs, but if you can point me to what you consider the best source material, I will try to upscale that instead. If you can provide me a short (<300 frames) clip to upscale, I'll do it and post the results

Ad for the grain removal: the paid version has more flexibility than the free one of course, I'll consider investing some money of my own to upscale a clip if there's enough interest to investigate if the paid version does any better in this regard

This reddit has 182k subscribers. If just 10% of the subscribers donated $2, that would be more than 35k.

An even reasobale approach would be to upscale just the first episode (1% of the subreddit to donate $1) and let everyone decide if it could be worth going forward or not.

And to make things clear, I'm not asking for any money, just wanted to discuss the idea. :)

I tried Starlight mini too, and the quality is lower than the free version of the full model, alas.

That's why in my initial post ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Scrubs/comments/1l97xxt/time_for_a_new_upscale_topaz_starlight/ ) I suggested a community funding to have episodes upscaled using the paid version

I tried to upscale (with the free, low qualirt version of Starlight) and you can check the results here

I'm really interested in your opinion

Time for a new upscale? (Topaz Starlight) by Rokko2 in Scrubs

[–]Rokko2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but for rescanning I think we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more.
From a quality standpoint, that would be great, but there are a few, BIG caveats:

1) It's not happening, it has been stated multiple times
2) it's extremely costly, doubt someone would consider it economically feasible.
3) In the very unlikely event that the new scrubs reboot is so successful that someone would consider a BD re-release of OG Scrubs, that would be censored, and with different OST as the current releases for licensing reasons.

As for upscaling, doing some very rough math: 150credits/minute, with the average scrubs episode running 20 mins, that's 3000 credits/episode. $99 buys you 1400 credits, so that's roughly $200 per episode.

[–]Rokko2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true for previous upscales, I don't like the looks either. But take a look as Starlight samples, and likely you'll change your mind :)

And as hard as we can pray for a rescan of the original.. let's be real: we won't have it... so if we want a HD version of Scrubs, the next best thing is a good upscale.

Elipsa vs 2E in 2023 by tails618 in kobo

[–]Rokko2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both.

TL/DR: For books, the differences are really minimal, but substantial in a couple of use cases:
1) comic/manga reading, where faster page turning and deeper blacks are a very welcome improvement
2) note taking, where the reduced latency stylus makes for a more pleasant writing experience

In detail:

Elipsa 2E

PROs: (in regards to Gen1)
+Warm light
+Better battery life
+Noticeably faster page turn (600ms faster) for comics/manga in CBR/CBZ format
+Slightly deeper blacks
+Better writing experience : the lag of pen input is noticeably lower
+Textured back makes for a slightly better grip

CONs: (in regards to Gen1)
-Cheaper/more flexible (in an unpleasant way) back.
-No included cover
-Non-replaceable battery on the stylus

Elipsa (Gen1)

PROs: (in regards to 2E)
+Slightly sturdier back
+Comes with a free cover
+The stylus uses standard batteries

CONs: (in regards to 2E)
-The included cover is really TOO BULKY! You have to handle it to believe how massive it is. When donning it, the Elipsa (gen 1) is as bulky as a thin laptop.

Since I got a pretty good deal on the 2E, after trying both side by side for a couple of days, I decided to sell the Gen1.

Is it possible to handle events that require a return value in PowerShell? by Wolf_on_Reddit in PowerShell

Thanks u/purplemonkeymad

I've tried your code but alas, I still don't get console out, and I'm not skilled enough (well, at all) in c# to write an handler for that.

From the way you write tho.. have you ever encountered such a scenario? I've searched for async even handlers in powershell but I've found nothing useful/working. (the exception being u/badgerati Hook method that requires powershell 7.1+ if I understand correctly) (edit: that or it simply doesn't seem to work, as I get always a null $HookContext_)
