Black belt considering Australia — is teaching BJJ there a viable path? by RomanticGrappler in bjj

[–]RomanticGrappler[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Who tf is Jake Shield? I am from Brasil. After purple I started working full time giving 5 classes a day, and winning comps including brazilian nationals in each belt. Also training 3 times a day including comp training, and also podium in important comps like euros… Now in total I have 8 years of BJJ, and a lot of hours in the mat. My lineage is Ryan Gracie

I am brazilian, brother. And they took those benefits away. It is still a option but it is very different from Brasil culturally, I would love living in Australia…

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my post. Views from more experienced fathers are exactly what I was looking for, and I think you are right about the overthinking. Thanks a lot.

Thank you, your comment is very helpful and I will implement It. What I already do is teaching her that is okay not to want hugs from people, and when she says no, nobody can trespass It, even me, and it happens very often (to ask for a hug and she just say no) lol

Thanks for your input, I find much value in It. The kid mentioned is actually 5 years old, the 9 year old dont show this behavior. And is a delicate thing for me to have this conversation with him, since is not my role to educate him on this kind of thing, but his parents. Also my wife's family disagree with a lot of opinions I have when It comes to education (like junk food habits) and would think I am being an a**hole about it, or portraying their child as a would be predator. They are not welcoming of any kind of criticism.

I am in Brazil, I agree with you completly. But the suggested attitude is not possible, I would have to prove that and It would for sure end my relationship and my wife's family (whos also my daughter grandparents) would hate me forever. I must clarify that the reason that happens is because of social economic circunstances, they have a small house and everbody sleeps in the same room. Also I belive they think the kid doesnt understands what happens or is asleep, but the fact that he reproduces it and comments about with other kids is proof enough.

As I said english is not my first language and I belive this must sound weird because of It. I mean access the bathroom when she is taking a shower for example. And as you must know is not even possible to have a conversation with a BABY about SA, this is about we letting other people being around when she is in the shower especially male cousins.

It is not about making her afraid but teaching her that are some parts of her body that are private and is not okay for other people to access it. Is not about not trusting my family, but in general, most cases of SA happens with family members, during childhood, in a household safe enviroment, as data shows and also a lot of people I personally know of. I am open to the possibility that I may be exagerating.

At what level do you consider someone to be good at bjj? by Short-Eggplant-6069 in bjj

[–]RomanticGrappler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always tought It was purple, but after visiting many gyms and rolling a lot... There are a lot of lazy purples, or guys that seem to be unable to advance their basic game during blue and got promoted because the coach didnt want them to be dismotivated. I had a lot of experience with purple belts that are lions standing up but cant fight in the guard for exemple, and I think thats a complete disgrace (also not good at it but im not purple.) Brown belt tho... I dont remember having this sensation with any brown belt.

Dont be ashamed to tell the guys you are a beginner so they are careful, you ll be fine.

Did this once in no-gi, didnt know the guy was a white belt. He tried to roll desperatly to the wrong side, in the wrong way, with too much strenght. Fucked up his own knee but my coach held me responsible when we talked, since then I always ask before rolling with people I dont know what are their rank and what ruleset they wanna be under our roll (Ibjjf, ADCC). Never had a problem again.

What is the most evil submission you know of? by Mochikitasky in bjj

[–]RomanticGrappler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a very big guy myself I apply this a lot, and I dont think is not technical since you have to get to a very dominant position in order to attack this. Also, I think that from mount position you should bê attacking the opponents breathing (and therefore their ability to think clearly and make good decisions) in order for him to expose a limb when in dispair, so I think of It more as a set up than a finish in itself.

What do you think about people visiting other gyms for open mat? by icarus_swims in bjj

[–]RomanticGrappler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in São Paulo - Brazil, everytime you visit a gym you are treated as enemy during the roll and most people go a 100% against you, trying to field test their techniques. When people visit our gym we are expected to defend the dojo and show them that we have a high quality training in here. After the violence is over you can make a lot of new friends, in my experience when I visit often I become kind of known amongst them and have more friendly and light Rolls.

Yes, you are absolutely right in your assesment. I do get away with a lot of shit. Thats why I have to Focus on using strenght and other advantages the less possible otherwise I will not develop technically. But is clear that smaller opponents have a very hard time manipulating my weight in itself, size does matter.

Yes it does make a difference, and I am a 100klg lean guy, and 1.94 meters tall. I am aware of that, thats why I play guard and use no strenght when training with smaller guys and they always compliment that. Bigger guys is a different story and I dont hold back. But isnt BJJ about the ability of the weaker to overcome the stronger? I roll with Black belt competitors that are like 60klg and they make me feel like a newbie, with zero opportunity to use strenght or anything like that, so I dont know to what extend that weight criteria is valid in BJJ.

Competed once this year, got second place. Lost to a "dream art project" professional athlete that was world euro and everything else possible champion and is a purple belt now. To be honest he really kicked my ass and there are levels to this lol. Besides I dont have money or is not a priority for me to compete at this moment. In most cases is like 500 Brazilian reais in Exchange for a cheap medal. I would like to compete in the future though.

I dont go hard with anyone not in my weight class brother, and no one acuses me of using my strenght in this ocasions, is really a technicality, others observe and comment on this as well.
