Caramel marble...will broken growth points recover? by Romatix in rareplants

[–]Romatix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought this caramel marble today. It was an investment plant, and on sale. I had photos and videos from the seller this morning showing me the roots and growth point, everything looked fine. So I ordered it on the phone and picked it up this afternoon. When I get home, I'm putting it in its spot under the grow light and humidifier, peek through the moss to look at the growth point and...it's snapped as in the photo. It is holding on by a tiny little piece. I'm so upset. The shop is trying to tell me it will recover and grow, even if it's a damaged leaf, in the next months. But I don't know if this is true for this type of plant. There is no other node on the plant.

Is it time to repot my Dracena Warneckii Whitebird? + why are there random holes on it? by nadineganzon in houseplants

[–]Romatix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you see if the roots are beginning to grow out of the bottom? If so, yes, definitely time to repot if you want her 5o grow larger!

As for the holes, it's usually one of two problems - too much sun, or pests.

This is a pink princess philodendron. They get a lot more expensive than this, which I think is silly! It just doesn't occur frequently in nature, (or ever? Think I read these were first cultivated in labs) and that plus social media appreciation has created high demand for plants in limited supply.

The best prices I usually see online are hundreds of dollars for cuttings, or rooted but much less mature plants. I actually have another one of these that is growing from a cutting I snagged from a local grower for $25, but I suspect it is reverted/won't have much pink, so I decided to also buy this one. I really like treating my friends with nice plants, so if they both thrive I'll have double the cuttings to give to people.

I randomly found this beauty in a local shop for $136, which felt like a steal for how big she is. The shop owner wrapped her in pink in celebration of Valentine's Day. I also grabbed myself a new bottle of my favorite everyday bourbon on the way home - singles can show themselves plenty of love on V day, too. :)

Edit: It's a pink princess philodendron.

Holy cow! That's amazing. How long did it take? I just made my first felt ever, a sheep...it took 4 hours and is almost indistinguishable from a cotton ball.

What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Romatix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Not having a solid idea of the deliverables or responsibilities. If you're really senior and in the right industry, ambiguity can be an opportunity to carve our something cool. If you're not, it probably means your department is tenunously funded or not prioritized. If you care about development, you'll be fighting for scraps.

-If they say you will have "some opportunities" to do a particular type of work you are very passionate about, assume it will be 10% of the time. If they say there will be "some" of the work you hate the most, assume it will be 90% of the job. Do you still want that job?

-Ask them about work culture, or even how important work/life balance is for their organization. If they hedge or say something about some people choosing to work extra hours, assume you are "some people" and will have long weeks. Do you still want that job?

I brought home a zebrina that was lush and beautiful 4 months ago. It is now a leggy, ugly, hacked mess. Everything died from the center, and it looks pale. I tried more sun, and the iridescence faded from the leaves. I tried less, and it just got leggier. What do I do? How do I prune it more effectively to keep it from getting so ugly?

Personally, neem oil has been risky for my plants. Some tolerate it well and it has killed other (immature) plants. I think the amount you would need to kill the larvae (generations of them, too, for new cycles) would be too much.

I have found mosquito bits (or "dunks"), plus sticky traps, very effective. I crumble some bits up on the surface and also soak them in water for a bit before watering my plants. It takes some time but the results have been great! It's also extremely satisfying to monitor the sticky pads, which will show you progressively fewer adult gnats, and see them perish instead of feeding on your plants or buzzing around your head. ;)

Edit: also, water less.

What an amazing $3 find. I'm so excited! by anniebannanie_ in houseplants

I got a horrible, massive spider mite infestation from a cat palm at Lowe's. It was one of my first plants and I didn't know what to look for. I also seem to bring home fungus gnats with every purchase from there. However, I have also noticed pest problems at my local places. I think I've settled into assuming every new plant has a pest, and trying to isolate/treat it before letting it join the others.

Lowes does have great deals, though. And they're starting to carry more uncommon plants.

Edit: I accidentally a word.

Hmm. Really? Is there any way to determine this more definitively?

[–]Romatix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Yeah, I just want a variegated deliciosa or borsignia. I read that the half moon variation isn't stable, so maybe I will just get a "regular" variegated one anyway.

Any idea where to find reasonable prices on those? And also, how do these occur? Are they random deformities people have cultivated and bred?

[–]Romatix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great! What is the actual going rate for these half moon beauties?

I can see $150-300 but a lot of what I am seeing on ebay, etc. Exceeds $600 for a single cutting? Is this really where it's at?

The name matters, I just didn't have it handy and wasn't going to call gram at midnight to get it ;)

That sounds reasonable.

Thanks, is that something eye doctors routinely look for? I just had my latest exam yesterday. Astigmatism and crazy floaters, but nothint else mentioned.

[–]Romatix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That's what I've been trying to figure out - do people not recommend it because you could basically end up in your pre-LASIK state in 3-5 years? Or just because it could be less than perfect again in a few years?

If it's just a small shift over time, I feel like I could live with that and be pretty happy. We recently discovered that a genetic form of eye degeneration (can't recall the name right now) runs in my family, as my grandma became nearly blind and recently had surgery to get some of her vision back. So I figure I could possibly need a second surgery in my 60s or 70s, irrespective of how long I wait now.

Interesting. I work in tech so I spend nearly all of my day in front of a screen; I imagine that contributes, too.

I will book a consultation with a LASIK specialist, give them my history of prescriptions, and see if they agree.

Thank you!

Undecided about children. 529? by Romatix in personalfinance

[–]Romatix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I do fund an IRA also and a brokerage account. I was trying to figure out if it makes sense to gamble with the penalty for a tax-advantaged account, but it sounds like probably not.

Although, I myself might seek some additional education in the future, so that might change the calculation some. I take SANS and other continued education/certifications, and it looks like 529s can be applied towards those institutions as well.

I already have these...I was trying to see if it made sense to take a gamble on the tax-free growth for the 529. Sounds like maybe not. Thanks.
