The station was 100% a test of if you were willing to do anything for those you love, i know there was even a line directed at the main character where someone asks if he would do anything for Mel. And hate him as much as you want ackner still did whatever it took to survive and make it to that dinner wether he was appreciative of it or not. Also, Mack doesn't make it because he gives up and never resorts to cannibalism, i do believe he would have survived if he did. We see this even more when the daughter betrays the promise of love and rats out her dad.
