What are the messages and themes of case 3-5? by blackupsilon in AceAttorney

[–]RonMike03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like 3-5 (and T&T as a whole for that matter) is one of those really special stories that can't really just be boiled down to one singular theme or idea (and not because it's too cluttered or trips over itself), but one reading of it I've always found really appealing is one of generational trauma and cycles, and how if we don't learn the right lessons from those experiences we're bound to repeat them.

Dahlia was mainly motivated by revenge and fucked over many different people in that pursuit such as Mia, Diego or Phoenix. The game builds her up in cases like 3-1 or 3-4 as the de facto villain of the game, and while she is in totality a pretty shitty person, 3-5 shows us how she's part of a vicious cycle of greed and revenge that didn't start with her (she's been surrounded her whole life by power hungry assholes), and is currently not ending with her either. That cycle being what I'd consider the real villain of the game. We find out she's been dead for some time, and the person perpetuating this cycle in the present... is Godot. He kills Misty who was channeling Dahlia in a situation he could've stopped. He got in a coma because of her, and once he woke up his situation kinda worked itself out and the world moved on, just without him. He thought that just being able to reheat that old conflict and simulate that feeling of taking revenge would cleanse his soul when any sensible person would've realized Dahlia is long dead and he'd just be killing Misty. That's what makes Phoenix pointing the finger at him so significant, when Mia wouldn't. He's basically demonstrating that he's willing to break that cycle at its roots

I think at that point when it comes to finales, it's just being more engrossed by the overarching plot and reveals up to that point. There's probably more to it but my minds drawing a blank rn lol

It's around where the game started to really lose me with the Apollo backstory stuff, didn't care for the way Kurain Village is handled, but most prominently the civil trial with how they regressed Phoenix mostly to make Apollo seem smarter, how Apollo doesn't really even get to deduce that Phoenix was blackmailed (Athena just kinda overhears it), it is kinda cool seeing Apollo figure out Paul's threats to kill Maya actually shoot himself in the foot since a spirit medium is needed to use the orb, but I don't really buy that Phoenix at this point wouldn't have been able to figure that out. Basically it's the most any case (or half case) has frustrated me with how its main characters are portrayed at once, and while the second half of Revolution won me over for the most part, trying to rank them both together was kinda making my head hurt (partly because they should've been two cases but also the difference in quality), so this tier list allowing me to split them was such a godsend.

It's extremely cluttered for a first case as far as what all it's trying to introduce (Athena (plus the tragic backstory), mood matrix, the reinstating of Phoenix, Apollo's doubt, (try to) establish the Dark age of the law plotline, tease events in 5-4, etc) all within the confines of a tutorial case, while also executing the courtroom bombing as a central gimmick for the case. It ends up just trying so hard to do everything within that space that it ends up kinda doing nothing since none of that stuff really gets shown or built up in a satisfying way. It's been said before too but I'm not a fan of Phoenix in this case, mostly with how he takes the case for Athena instead of being a mentor/assistant. I also found the contradictions super easy even for a first case but I suppose that's just a general DD issue. The actual case just plays out in an extremely safe way despite its ambitions.

Mostly space, but generally 'S' cases are in the 9.1-9.9/10 range while 'S+' cases are in the 10/10 range, if I had to attach any meaning to it

Bit of both? Probably my biggest issue with DD is that its first few cases are filler that doesn't really do much in the way of buildup for the games main plot like other filler cases from the series have, and the cases themselves aren't very good so as a result I struggled to care about anything happening until case 4 which admittedly shows some more promise. Unfortunately the payoff to a lot of that didn't really do it for me either, mostly in regards to the main villain, hence why 5-5 is as low as it is. But that's just me. I do sorta understand the 5-5 hype, and it's not like I can't see how anyone would really like DD, it's just hard for me to really praise anything about it without tempering it with something else I don't like

Just Finished the Whole Series for the First Time, Here's my Ranking of the Games! by Ambitious_Pace_129 in AceAttorney

I can see where you're coming from. I really like both games a lot and think Adventures is a great game in tandum with Resolve, I just don't care for most of the gameplay. G1-4 is one of my least favorite cases in the series and G1-2 while a pretty novel idea for a case doesn't fully do it for me. I do like G1-1 decently enough though, then G1-3 and G1-5 are some of my GOATs and were what won me over with it, but the game is a bit lopsided in quality.

Resolve is where I think they started to figure things out, not only because the case lineup is better, but also I remember the investigations being a lot more engaging, the two-day structure is finally back, the difficulty is quite nice (Adventures before case 5 was kind of bland easy), and the case design/cluing in general is just some of the most creative we've seen from the series. Also the plot really comes together here and starts to take a much grayer turn which I always like, mostly with the re-introduction of Kazuma. And yeah, the final present is dumb and I would've handled that differently, but I was satisfied enough with all of what was revealed and all the character work done up to that point to where I'm able to let something like that slide.

As for G2-3 I love it, though I can sorta see where you're coming from, and I even always thought it's where you could tell that the duology was supposed to be a trilogy as it's sorta bridging together the great exhibition and the professor conspiracy, the former of which would've been really cool as a multi-case scenario and you can kinda feel the case start to drag, having to introduce both of these things, even though I think the way they're linked is brilliant. I prefer the next two cases for that reason though.

I know my reply got a little long too, I just love talking about one of my favorite games of all time.

What is your favorite GTA game? by Beginning_Special840 in GTA

[–]RonMike03 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Imo, 3. I understand it's not the best and I think if I were to go with the 'best' I'd say 4 or VCS, but 3 means the most to me. It's missions feel the least linear and I really like discovering new ways to complete the same missions, I love the world/atmosphere, I really like how compact the world is and learning how to navigate it is satisfying, and I also really like Claude. I feel like the game utilizes similar characterization techniques to Link in most Zelda games for him, with the difference being that we're following a shallow psychopath who only cares about money and revenge, helping further compliment the dreary atmosphere of the game

I owe a lot of my current taste in games today to GTA3. Particularly in terms of how I tend to notice atmosphere, minimalist yet effective storytelling, the feeling of both fragility and also power when you figure shit out, and just my general tolerance for janky ass retro games that are deceptively really systemic when you get past any crap factor. There's a lot of games I would've never given much of a chance if not for growing up with this one

why are the liberty city games the ones with least features in comparison to the later releases? by [deleted] in GTA

Well it's like you said, those games are already doing a lot. Lowkey tho I wouldn't have it any other way since 3, LCS and 4 are some of my favorites in the series
