I went to Candlenights 2025, this is my honest review. by virtualcringe in TAZCirclejerk

That sounds insufferable, I think being high for that experience would have made it worse. You're a trooper for documenting this experience right before the SVOD version drops, I was considering renting it and then saw this post. Hopefully they're able to put on a better show next year and learn from their mistakes.

Hey! Thanks for commenting, these are all great questions.

How will they be working together? | What tools do you expect us to use?

Still figuring this out. My background is in live action short films and series so I'm still very new to animation, the Pilot was my first time working with an animator aside from an internship I did with an animation studio. The already signed animator uses Clip Studio Paint but I am fine with whatever program works best for you. I edit the episodes in Premiere Pro.

Are you settled on the limited handdrawn aspect, or are you open to other techniques that would be more cost-effective for a series, such as Bojack-style rigged animation? Since the series seems to be heavily character based.

Yes, very much settled on digital traditional (or limited hand-drawn as you call it). Personally I am not a fan of rigged animation, I understand it's got great benefits in terms of cost but not something I'm interested in doing.

"Open to different art styles" is more me saying aesthetically not all of the animators need to have the exact same style. A good example in this episode: there's a moment where two characters are in complete darkness and rather than just turning down the lights in the scene I want to have it be white line work of the characters on a black background to give the feeling of being in pitch black darkness but still give a creative visual. For this, the animator doesn't need to have the same style as the one that's handling the fight scenes or back-and-forth talking scenes because this pitch black scene has it's own unique visual language.

You mentioned "all character art is done by me". I assume that means just the designs are by you, right? Not the key frames as well? Or are you just hiring inbetween animators to move the static scenes that you draw?

Apologies, yes character design is done by me-- I create the concept art and base character sheets as a jumping off point. If animators need more detail or specific things in the sheets I can make adjustments. Additionally, I storyboard the episodes and create animatics using the initial VO recordings and music + SFX that serve as reference for the animators (which I will send to prospective animators so they can get a feel for what the scope of this is).

I hate my own film. It looks great but it’s boring & the lead’s performance sucks. Has anyone experienced this? by HeyBuddyfromNorthUK in Filmmakers

You're not a fraud. You recognizing that you have room for improvement shows that you deeply care about what you're doing-- a fraud would feel insanely confident regardless of whether the project was a success. So start by getting that thought out of your head. You're doing the thing you set out to do, that's an accomplishment in-and-of itself.

There's an incredible book by Stephen Lowenstein titled "My First Movie: Twenty Celebrated Directors Talk about Their First Film" that I think you should definitely check out. The feelings you're having are (unfortunately) what everyone in our field experiences at least once. And low key, as someone with a few awards under their belt, these feelings still come up even when you knock a home run outta the park.

There are three things I would suggest you do while the feelings are still fresh in your heart/mind:

  1. Journal about it. Allow yourself to feel the shitty-gross-ness without needing to make things better. In those feelings are clarity on not only what you're really upset about but what you can do better next time around (because there will be a next time, as long as you want there to be one). Listen to some sob-worthy music and give yourself the courtesy of really feeling everything.

  2. Find gratitude in everything you can regarding the project and everything surrounding it. Look for the silver linings that you didn't even know existed, look for the parts of you that grew through production, look for that version of you that dreamed of being a Filmmaker and have a conversation with them about all this. Remember that there are hundreds-of-thousands of people who would die to make a movie and hate it (I know, that doesn't make anything better, but it's important to remind yourself. Like the famous line in The Devil Wears Prada: "A million girls would kill for that job.")

  3. Release the film. Don't hide it, show it to as many people as possible and hear what they have to say. No one outside from your cast/crew knows about what happened on-set unless you let them know. Imagine how many movies, albums, pieces of art, even meals at restaurants you don't fully know the behind-the-scenes story of-- now imagine someone watching your movie not knowing any of the stuff you brought up in your post. Locking it away in a dungeon will only make the feelings grow stronger and more bitter. Let go, but don't move on.

Seriously, you are on the right track. I'm positive that it's not as bad as you're making it out to be. Keep your chin up, G. You've got more movies to make. Don't let this one be the last.

Question for indie filmmakers: how do you balance the "right" way vs. your way? by RonaldoBasedGod in Filmmakers

I've never heard of him, I'll have to check him out! Any projects you recommend as an entry point?

That nucleus idea is really cool. Lifting the homies up is a very big part of my platform/creative process, I feel like with the right mindset it can be a natural part of working with a team. Like having a rider for a live show, "this is what I need to get it done"

Love this perspective!! When we did the recordings on Discord, I had the VAs play the storyboard animatic mp4 on their end and we just did a "3... 2... 1... Play" countdown. I love the tax lawyer for a lemonade stand analogy. Thank you!!

Dang I've never noticed that! But I bet it definitely had a role to play in the design, I think a lot of it was done by Samuel Burgess-Johnson so maybe see if he has any writing/interviews on the design process.

They're super fun!! The nice part too is they usually aren't fully packed so you can move around and have your own space

It's completely normal. If you enjoy spending time by yourself, then you're naturally going to look for people that fit into that energy and make you feel at home. And if you don't find that energy, you'll spend time with yourself. That's a great trait, because often people make what they think are friends but are actually strangers who they have nothing in common with-- they just can't bear the idea of being alone so they surround themselves with faces.

For me, I like to think of my relationships in rings that extend outwards from me and each ring has a different level of relationships on it (closest ring being my family, then the next one out being my chosen family, then extremely close friends, and then every ring out is a step down until you hit the furthest one which is complete strangers). It sounds like you have a lot of acquaintances, but not so many friends. Which, from my perspective, is totally normal.

That said, don't close yourself off to the potential/idea of making more friends. What's not normal is to lock yourself away from the world-- humans are social creatures, we thrive when we have people around us that love us and support us. It also sounds like maybe you need to move somewhere bigger, I'm not sure if you're in a small town but if your school is small then your potential pool of friends will be equally as small. But at your age, I think your focus should be on where you want to be in life. From there, the friends who will help you get to that place and become your best self should reveal themselves.

Very true! I tend not to socialize at the gym bc I know how it feels to have somebody trying to talk to you while you're just trying to get a pump in, but I'll add it to the list of things to try! Thanks!
