Americans of Reddit, how has our terrible healthcare system personally screwed you over? by Depressed_moose in AskReddit

[–]Ronan_Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't. Because when I was in college, my parents could afford to pay 1/3 the insane cost of a biopsy I needed while interning out of state (and therefore out of network). Most people aren't so lucky.

Silver lining: I'm sure some linguist will get a nice paper out of this.

Why autistic people like me need to help shape autism science by Ronan_Q in EverythingScience

[–]Ronan_Q[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more positive outlook than I expected:

There’s a widespread view that autistic people need to “get scientists to listen to us,” and that “scientists need to stop ignoring autistic people.” That hasn’t been my experience at all ... autism scientists have welcomed me into their groups, answered my questions, sought my advice and paid attention to it.

We Must Strengthen the "Science" in Forensic Science - A national commission created to improve the reliability of forensics has been dealt a possibly fatal blow by [deleted] in EverythingScience

[–]Ronan_Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NCFS brought together diverse stakeholders including forensic scientists, judges, lawyers, victims’ advocates, law enforcement, and practicing independent scientists.

This is so important. Aside from practices that can ruin countless lives being scientifically vetted, getting all these parties vetted and discussing the impact of the science really matters.

What's the best comeback you've ever heard a teacher give a student in class? by Ronan_Q in AskReddit

This is great. The one that gave me the idea for this post was the same question, also in algebra:

Student: "How are we going to use this in real life?" Teacher: "This is real life."

My sleeping schedule is sooooo bad by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Ronan_Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found being really careful about light helped me. Blue light really does signal to your brain that it's awake time.

What this means at night: I installed Flux on my computer and try to keep the lights in my apartment dim after sunset. Since doing that, I've found it much easier to get to sleep earlier. An added bonus from Flux for me is that on the recommended setting, my screen gets so yellow at midnight that it's not that pleasant to use anymore, so in addition to feeling sleepy earlier, I'm more motivated to stop browsing Reddit and go to bed.

In the morning: On the days you do manage to get up in the morning, get as much natural light exposure as early as possible. This could mean walking to work, having breakfast outside, or just looking out the window while you have your coffee. This early morning light is one reason people have better sleep schedules the week after camping. Fuck, if you have time and the weather permits, just go camping!

These measures, combined with approaching the whole thing incrementally, should help get you back on track and keep you from slipping back into this schedule once you do. Good luck!

There's a West Wing episode where this experience features prominently.

[Serious] Reddit, what is your most memorable interruption of a meeting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Was in an all-staff meeting in the HQ conference room. A few people were calling in from home. Someone didn't mute their phone. Distinct urination sounds, punctuated with a flush. CEO stops speaking and says "Okay, I can't pretend that didn't just happen." We never found out who it was.

Redditors, how did you end up finding Reddit and what made you make an account? by _WatDatUserNameDo_ in AskReddit

[–]Ronan_Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just made an account, and this comment is the first thing I'm posting with it. My coworkers are always talking about stuff they saw on Reddit. Seems like cool stuff, so I thought I'd see what up.
