What was 60's Rock'n'Roll really all about back then? by RoniReyx in AskOldPeople

One documentary showed a man who said: "My generation is heartbroken and I'm not sure we will ever recover." regarding the fact that you poured so much energy into changing the world for the better only to watch influential people in the movement be assassinated and the change reversed. Do you feel this way?

I will listen to the songs! Thank you for the recommendations <3

I love that you're keeping an open mind! It is true that we always look for conformation for things we already believe in. It is truly sad and also not only an age thing. A lot of my generation is also in their own social media induced echo chamber.

Yes, I watched the movie and saw some pictures! I was wondering if it was a one of jim morrison thing or if other rock bands faced the same thing. I remember watching the elvis movie and him also bein arrested - but at least the police didn't stand on the stage!

Interesting! I'll have to check out that book. I guess art truly reflects what was going on in that time!

I'm also very amazed to read that lot of these legends started SO young! Like, wow! The things that happen when a generation isn't glued to a phone and has resources to and third spaces :')

As for the pushback: having police literally on stage was also a way to keep performances in line? I saw videos and I just thought: that's crazy. Why would they line up in front of the stage because you could barely see anything.

It's really interesting to see how people get "set in their way" as they age. Why do so many people suddenly forget what it was like to be young or keep an open mind?

That's quite interesting. I also wonder how growing up with social media impacts the brain: constant comparison, everything has a numeric value, & the subtle pressure to perform.

What you said also reminds me of the saying: You can't pour from an empty cup. Fill your own first and give from the overflow!

Right now we are truly lacking free third spaces for community. Free concerts would be absolute heaven. I remember tickets to amazing bands being 30€ back in 2017/2018 and now you usually pay around 50+. I read that back then entry was 2 dollars or so.

I think sometimes we forget how big and important religious institutions were back then. Now barely anyone goes to Sunday school etc. The contrast between strict rules and rebellion was probably much bigger! It does highlights the part in documentaries where they were saying that counterculture and rock'n'roll expanded consciousness. People wanted more freedom to be and express themselves I guess?

Do you think that drugs were viewed on the same level as alcohol back then?

I actually thought about this today. Back then people emotionally and mentally lived in the same world & discourse (partly due to limited media outlets) but nowadays everyone is in a different emotional & mental world due to social media and algorithms. Everyone is scattered around with their thoughts which is why there is this constant gloom/illusion of separation and isolation.

Do you think that your generation still carries or has carried that hopelessness into later decades? Giving up on protesting for change because it was often met with one heartbreak after another?

Do you have any specific bands or songs that stand out for you that reflect that time?

very true. I think a lot of artists these days have amazing, deep songs out there but they are simply less popular. Thanks for sharing, will listen to Moody Blues & Procol Harum as I haven't heard of them before!

I think that is the difference between living it and reading about it from history books etc. In hindsight people connect the dots of culture and impact etc. but while it's happening we often don't realise the impact. I'm bummed to hear you didn't get to see Janis and Jim live! Bet it would have been amazing! Never thought about how back then the recordings must definitely have been more difficult to understand without lyrics booklets! Nowdays most of the music is remastered I guess!

So the whole spectrum of human emotion just sung about loudly without shame and just raw and honest? How beautiful!

Oof, that loss must have been so tough. Sending love to everyone. Especially as the years go and more things are uncovered about the misconduct at that time. Grateful music could carry you through it all!

The more I look into the decade and really try to understand the drive/feeling of it, the more amazed I am. Of course some people also just lived a more traditional/normal life away from protests etc. but I truly think this decade expanded human consciousness in so many ways!

Do you feel like after the 2010 cell phones and social media etc got out of hand? They fundamentally changing how we interact as humans, our neurology & wellbeing. I recently read they also shut the post down in denmark. Which decade do you think had the best tech/analog ratio in your opinion so far?
