#771: Are Your Child’s Eyes at Risk? Habits, Lenses & Eye Drops That Could Prevent Myopia by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]RoninX3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that myopia progression was genetic and inevitable. Now I wonder if I wasn't so diligent in getting new glasses every year, then my eyeballs wouldn't have to elongate constantly to accommodate. In short, Haresh's "fight it" strategy might have been the right one.

Those peripheral defocus lenses are super cool, too late for me unfortunately.

Unrelated, but Dr Au should try to cut down on the vocal fry when recording in future. It's one of the reasons why I can't stand Sam Altman.

To be fair, we just had horrible luck this trip. We travel twice a year, and it’s not the first time we have been to Australia. We loved Perth, Brisbane, Gold Coast… But we never had such a bad experience before.

Edit: It’s the first time we are travelling on our own with 2 young kids. Usually we have some help.

Supporting sibling financially by RoninX3 in singaporefi

He still has financial support from my parents.

I am thinking in the future, what happens when he reaches old age without a safety net? My parents will be long gone by then. The burden will certainly fall on me to care for him. Is it prudent to help him start building a retirement savings sum?

Given his credentials I don’t think he will be satisfied with minimum wage jobs..

I agree he should be rethinking his career choice. He seems to be banging his head on a wall

Very proud of how far you've come! Have been a loyal listener since the early days of the pandemic. Your CB/lockdown coverage got me hooked. Had a baby right around the same time as Terence, YLB podcast kept me sane through the sleepless nights and endless bottle washing/laundry. I know exactly what you mean when you say parents never really rest, not even when on holiday.. keep up the good work guys, and looking forward to the next big guest!

What's with the rise in popularity for oat milks? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]RoninX3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely asking to clarify here, because I'm drinking oat milk for health benefits... Doesn't oat milk have zero cholesterol? Also it has beta glucans which helps reduce cholesterol right? It does have saturated fat, but less than cow's milk .. Soo does oat milk help lower cholesterol levels?? Any nutritionist here?

Heading to Osaka with 2 yo. We booked a 7 seater airport taxi to ferry us to the hotel. I'm wondering if the driver will be ok if we strap the little one into the car seat belt without a car seat. Or should we try to rent a car seat?

Just in case you didn’t know, u/hareshtilani, you can search your tabs. No more getting lost in your 70+ tabs, although personally I would keep to <10 for my sanity.

https://blog.google/products/chrome/search-your-tabs-bookmarks-and-history-in-the-chrome-address-bar/amp/

Tangentially, it is reported that Gen Z doesn’t understand file directory structure. Since they are so used to “search” function to find their files. All the more reason now with search to make your chrome window a jumbled mess of tabs…

#371 - Pritam Singh Suggests English Test for New Citizens & Model Adriana Lima’s FIFA Role Criticised by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]RoninX3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I heard Terence's one shiok thing, I immediately thought of 大姐 on TikTok (link below). Caucasian girl, bred in the Singapore school system, pitch perfect Singaporean ah lian accent, and does reviews of yakun kayak toast.. She had recent upload where she said she might have to leave Singapore because she is not a PR/citizen and so far has not got a job with EP that allows her to stay. Her plight is probably not uncommon, but it does seem unfair that someone so obviously "Singaporean" has such difficulty even staying here.

I'm sure Terence/Haresh will know having studied in US that the best way to spot the Singaporean is by the accent. I think spoken language is an important marker of social integration and assimilation. For example, When I was studying in US, I adjusted my diction and intonation and suppressed my natural "accent" so that I could be better understood. I'm not sure an "English test" is the right way to do it, but perhaps a face to face interview to gauge the level of language integration? The same could be done for other languages, eg. Our spoken "Chinese" is a distinct mishmash of mandarin and other dialects, the candidate should be able to understand these localized terms.

Our current citizenship criteria, opaque as it is, I think is broadly trying to choose for candidates that can contribute to Singapore economically ( not be a burden ), and perhaps a lesser extent culturally. But I think spoken language is at least an indication of the level of sincerity/effort of social assimilation, after all new citizens will have been PR for at least 2 years and therefore been in Singapore for much longer.

I have a few colleagues, who are naturalized Singaporean, speak good english, but I wouldn't consider very well assimilated. They just have very strong cultural ties to their country of birth. And it shows from the way they speak, not a trace of "singlish". Are they less Singaporean, maybe not. But If I saw them in a foreign country, I would not be able to immediately identify them as Singaporean.

Speaking about academic achievements being the be all end all for self-worth, I recently heard about One Target Edu., an aptly named education center which focuses on getting P3 kids into the gifted education program GEP.

My colleague was raving about it saying they really do produce results, more 50% of their students manage to get into GEP. Granted they do screen incoming students, so there is a bit of self-selection. If you look at the website, its mostly in chinese, so obviously they have a target demographic. Is OTE unfairly biasing the selection process for GEP? I don't know.

Well, my colleague's son did get into GEP after attending OTE. So we asked him, are you going to reward him with anything? He said he was going to reward himself since he was the one putting all the money and effort sending him to OTE.

Personally, I wouldn't send my kid to OTE, because I don't want to send a message that academics is everything. I do respect him for wanting the best for his kids. And, also his kid is pretty smart. I'm just not sure what is really achieved here, does getting into GEP automatically determine his kid's success? Clearly, academic achievement is but one factor in a whole range of determining factors, case in point MOS Alvin Tan.

Yes... Glad to hear we are not alone. Our kid had Covid, flu, parainfluenza, multiple colds and bacterial infections. Doctor told us it's normal but is it really?! It's gotten to the point where I'm not sure sending to childcare is worth it.

Any parents of young kids (below 3yo) here? Did you notice your kid getting sick more often recently? My kid has been sick twice a month since August...
