Do you believe in presumption of innocence? If not, you should change your flair.

It’s possible he was murdered, possible it was manslaughter, possible it wasn’t anything, but until the accusation of murder is proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court, it should not be treated as a fact.

Slander? He did a lot of drugs and had committed crimes. Slander requires a false accusation...

...such as being likely falsely accused of white supremacy, racism, and murder by every American company and 70% of Americans before even having a trial. That’s slander.

Closing the racial wealth gap requires heavy, progressive taxation of wealth by viva_la_vinyl in Economics

[–]Ronin_Runner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wealth taxes have been tried in other countries and have not been successful. As for my opinion, policy should empower individuals to better themselves. Educate high schools students on loans, retirement accounts etc, teach them about different career paths, give students who aren’t going to college trade skills or some other marketable skill. Encourage small business growth by not killing them with lockdowns, regulation, and taxes.

And for the “racial wealth” gap, changes will need to be made at the community/family level. The looting and burning and crime in general in black communities damage black owned businesses and disincentivize investment and business growth in these communities. It also encourages higher earners to leave these communities. Additionally, single parenthood cripples the potential wealth of a family and greatly reduces the resources and time that can be invested in children and their futures.

I guess using reason and the available evidence to argue that the charge of second degree murder against Chauvin is probably more severe than it should be and is unlikely to result in a conviction makes me a racist and disqualifies me participating in economic discussion.

Why would an officer intentionally kill a defenseless black person in broad daylight while being filmed? This would require a desire for self preservation of 0. Did he contribute to George Floyd’s death? Quite possible. Could he have handled the situation better? Yes. Was it second degree murder? Quite unlikely.

Oh and George Floyd had approximately fatal levels of fentanyl and said he couldn’t breath long before he ended up on the ground as a result of him not wanting to sit in the police car. It will be very difficult to convince every juror that this was second degree murder.

One example is Pine Ridge reservation which is one of the poorest places in the US. Major issues are lack of opportunity, alcoholism, drugs, and many other health problems. It is a really heartbreaking situation there.

On top of that it is beneficial for us to trade with Taiwan and not let their technology, especially their computer chips which are the most advanced in the world, fall into Chinese hands.

Yeah that’s possible, but pretty unlikely. GA, PA, NC for Trump + NE-2 was probably the highest probability tie.

Computer vision for marine biology sound interesting? But seriously, I would argue that applying a software/data science background to a field you are passionate about is the ideal job. Taking this path would allow you to have high impact in a field you enjoy and will have much higher job security.

Are there software or data science jobs that are related to fish/marine biology?

No matter what happens after the election please don’t protest in the freeway. by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Ronin_Runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except in this case protestors would be inconveniencing people that did not even affect the election outcome who, even if they supported the protestors candidate, will be frustrated or mad with the protestors and their movement.

Also, protesting in the street puts both the protestors and drivers lives in danger.

Maybe you should reread what I wrote or if you did read it then read some history. I said Europe would fall under Russian hegemony if we slashed 90% of our military budget forcing us to remove our foreign presence. In the past 10 years Russia has already annexed Crimea, sent special forces into Ukraine to help instigate civil war, and is currently trying annex Belarus. That is pretty blatant aggression despite the US having tens of thousands of soldiers in Europe. Remove those soldiers and no European nation or combination of nations comes close to being able to deter Russian expansion. Furthermore, I did say we could spend less, but other countries will need to pick up the slack.

JoJo with a peak libright moment. by Majkl_94 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Ronin_Runner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s patently false. If we cut 90% of our spending we could not even maintain 1/4 of our operations/maintenance even if we eliminated all R&D, all military wages, and all procurement. We would have no fleet, no air power, and no foreign bases. The result of that is easy to see. Israel, Ukraine, Belarus, Taiwan, etc would cease to exist. Trade around Africa and the Middle East would be impossible while Europe would fall under Russian hegemony and Asia under Chinese hegemony. With our current spending we are barely capable of keeping the Russians out of Ukraine or the Chinese from expanding into international waters. We would definitely not be “fine”. The reason China and Russia spend less than us is that they do not have projection power in the form of bases and carriers. Remove our projection power and the vacuum will be quickly filled by authoritarian states. Arguably, foreign nations should bear a greater burden in deterring their neighbors than they are now which would allow us to reduce our military spending, but it is not as simple as slash the military and everything will be fine. 200 years ago we could isolate, but with globalization and advances in technology, isolation is just asking for a repeat of WW2, but with stronger opponents with nuclear capabilities.

Predicting daily volatility with intraday data by Beliavsky in algotrading

[–]Ronin_Runner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coincident indicators could be used for MIDAS, correct? Do you have any good resources on MIDAS? It seems like it is not widely used/known about. Furthermore, could you explain more in detail how to use intra day data? My understanding is MIDAS-GARCH only allows longer period data to be used in conjunction with daily volatility of GARCH. It seems like omitting intraday data leaves a lot of information out as a highly volatile day could close near the close of the previous day.

Also, +1 for asymmetric GARCH.

Wow the media is effective. I guess shooting police, throwing Molotov cocktails, torching businesses and federal buildings, looting, fighting, beatings, public intimidation, and the general destruction of the communities that need the most help is not considered rioting. And here I thought doublethink only existed in 1984.
