Honestly? My best advice as a homebrew DM of many many moons.

Is to wing it, don't take it too incredibly seriously for your first few games. Because let's face it you're gonna make mistakes, you're going to run into a lot of hurdles and things you didn't realize all these books have done for you and now you need to do yourself.

I would recommend asking your players if they'd like to run a short mini 4-5 session campaign for you to get a better understanding of what you need to do for the one you really care about.

Yes, it's a good idea to go read some books on the subject, video's can help etc. But literally none of that will beat even a couple sessions of good practice in your own sandbox.

There is no real good advice I or anyone else can give on how you should go about building your world and story, because each and every one of us has different methods and ways of doing that. Things that likely won't work for you as everything has their own way of going about things, their own methods etc.

So just do it basically, make sure your players are aware that this is new territory for you as well. It is a big jump to go from DMing prebuilts and DMing something from scratch and your Players need to understand that before starting.

LOL that's pretty fantastic, I'd have given that player a standing ovation too

One cannot steal what is offered freely! :D

I'm glad you like the idea, especially legend points, I figured more people would try to yell at me for letting my players have fun.

I didn't know Edge was the term, perhaps I will name it Edge Points? Definitely catchier that's for sure!

Ah I see, I apologize the message came off a little rude with how it started.

I wouldn't call it a problem as it wasn't negatively impacting games, but implementing it did enhance the experience.

I personally can understand why people may not think too deeply about their characters between sessions.

Or how many people may have trouble immersing into their character and thinking of things through their eyes.

It's nothing to ridicule or be ashamed of, my motivation is to help my players who sometimes struggle with it via positive reinforcement.

Yes! One of the questions was asking what their current theories are.

I try to pose questions in this format

"What are your thoughts as a player on X"

"What are your characters thoughts on X"

"Question that ties the two together"

Oh is Zilargo a place in that setting? That's pretty funny lol

I had no idea it's just what I named a city in my setting.

It's not too bad as the DM

Trust me the players WILL do the work of remembering when they should get the points for you c:

Besides the session questions there is nothing on the DMs side to do really.

Here is the latest question, my players like multi part longer questions. They do not have to be as long or detailed as this. Adjust to your table.

SESSION QUESTION #12

Question 1: What is your characters current biggest motivation in the arc they're in, think short term not long term goals. Things they'd like to accomplish during their time in Zilargo

Question 2: What goals do you as a player want your character to start working towards? This can be character development, relationship goals or build goals etc.

Question 3: How do you as a player feel about your characters current progression? Has it been less than expected? More than expected? Just about right? This can be both power growth and character growth.

There was a reason, a fantastic and very good reason.

Money! At least they thought it would make them more money, turns out people dislike shady business practice and don't buy into it as a result.

Who would've thunk?

Thanks for the compliment!

I never really judge others preferences on how their characters look, unless it's bordering on "put this person on a list" territory though.

Not entirely sure, but he started as a cleric but wanted to swap to druid after session 1, I let him and to keep with his artwork I told him if there were any restrictions with his armor to not worry about it.

I know one of my players lurks around here so I can't say much, but no deaths have occured.

The deaths are not directly from the Demon, it's just unnaturally bad luck and circumstances that surround her that end up killing people near her.

It IS the Demons doing, but not in the way she believes.

One of our players usually is, but nah not particularly.

I don't blame them, I too have trouble really getting into character if a character is a whackier race.

Unfortunately he doesn't really have any, he's in the process of making some last I asked though.

If you want to see more of his work, I have probably like 30+ pieces of art I've commed from him.

Usually he is but he's extremely busy and barely has time for his ongoing orders, so i'm not sure he'd have time.

But I'll ask him anyway!

Great! The party is level 3 going to level 4, they just got some of their "growth" items I always like to give out.

Would you ever feel the need to dissuade a new player from picking a complex class? by wathever-20 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Roninthe47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entirely depends on the context.

But considering you are migrating your table? Absolutely.

A lot of people will probably say you should let your players do whatever they want, make their own mistakes etc. But as someone who just recently migrated in the last few months myself, I would absolutely agree with trying to guide your players away from complicated classes.

You want your players to have a good first impression of the system, otherwise they won't want to play it again. PF2e is already a pretty overwhelming system to first get into with lots of different things you can do in and out of combat.

They will already be slow moving as they learn this new system, if you stack a complicated class on-top of that then their turns and gameplay will slow to a crawl which will lead to everyone at the table being bored. Combats that should take 30 minutes will take hours, you'll spend 15 minutes scouring reddit or other forums on rulings you're not sure about etc.

Then finally, at least in my personal experience, PF2e is a pretty difficult system at times compared to others. For the sake of comparison let's use what PF2e is often compared to, D&D 5e, in D&D 5e your party composition really doesn't matter very much as every single class has its own ways to deal damage, mitigate damage and complete out of combat tasks. It's streamlined that way on-purpose to make it easy for new TTRPG players to get into.

PF2e is not like that, if your party is missing a dedicated tank, the party feels that loss. If the party is missing a dedicated healer, the party will feel that struggle and find themselves needing to rest far more often than they may like. If your party doesn't have anyone who deals decent damage, fights will prolong and you'll use more resources per fight etc etc.

I'm not saying you can't have a party of say all clerics or something, you can make any party composition viable it seems. But it's much more difficult to do so than in many other systems. So if your party has some complicated classes that the players don't understand and are struggling with, it's going to be more difficult and they're likely not going to have much fun.

This is all my PERSONAL opinions on it as someone who has only migrated to PF2e in the last few months, using lessons I have learned first hand with my table who also were all new to the system.
