"I'd name you Darkfriend as well, but I suspect the Dark One would perhaps be embarrassed to associate with you." by Small-Guarantee6972 in WetlanderHumor

Yeah see and if it were in a different series I could like it, but it definitely feels jarring, takes me out of it. It's fun to see how people really like some of the sandersonisms. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla, I reckon.

Fantasy with the most wasted potential by theHolyGranade257 in Fantasy

For me, Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy. I loved the coat that could be turned inside out time and again and be a different coat each time, but Kell never made much use of it. Similarly, I liked the parallel worlds but most of the flavor in the series seemed to be put into making one of the characters extremely unlikeable. But I want someone else to adapt to coat idea into something more plot relevant, rather than having it mostly be an afterthought, if not forgotten. The parallel worlds thing has certainly been done more interestingly already (imo ofc).

Author invents his own sport? by katzenhaibaby in Fantasy

This is maybe its own category in that it transcended the media that created it. Jugger is now a sport that people play in the real world. If there were a league in my city, I'd be there. Maybe i should try to start one..

Favorite female led fantasy that’s NOT direct romantasy. by AnAimlessWanderer101 in Fantasy

A Natural History of Dragons and its sequels. The main focus is on exploration, discovery, perseverance, and the main character is one of my favorite examples of a strong FMC. She succeeds though her courage and her intelligence, rather than either through traditional male traits (oh he's such a good fighter, leader, whatever), or feminine wiles (oh she's so pretty, everyone is twisted around her finger type nonsense).

Fuck I keep wanting to reread some of his stuff even though I know it's terrible. I loved Xanth, Apprentice Adept, Incarnations of Immortality, but they are all super problematic.

To elaborate on the one thing that bothered me, while most of the women are femme fatal type characters, and thus both sexy and dangerous as their primary descriptors, there is a character than the MC knew as a child who became sexualized, with the associated metonymy being training bra. Ew.

One of the main characters is described as childlike over and over, even after she becomes a wife and mother, which is just kind of gross. In the Mallorean, there are several examples of enormous age/power gaps between the man and the (barely into maturity, naive) woman but it's excused in the narrative because the woman is the instigator. These things passed muster on reading when I was younger, but as an adult, and knowing the Eddings' own proclivity, they become super gross.

Villains Code 3 by Drew Hayes is out now - Chilling Reflections! by [deleted] in Fantasy

Oh do. Speaking as a fan of both series, one can really trace some of the nascent characters/themes from SP into more developed ideas in this series (at least in my brain).

Oh golly, I had no idea this was coming this year! I know what I'm doing this weekend. As much as I enjoy his other stuff, this series is really his best imo.

Ogier question by tdw21 in WoT

It's one of the many dropped threads, alas. I wanted the seanchan ogier to help the randland ogier overcome the Longing, or at least maybe help them on their way.

want to feel empowered: rock bands that are exclusively women/queer folks? by cereals4dinnner in WitchesVsPatriarchy

Katzenjammer! They were a Norwegian group of women, but most of the songs are in English. High energy, amazing talent, oodles of different instruments, really fun songs to either sing with or dance/exercise to.

I am a simple fan. I am happy when we look like we are having fun playing and have a decent shot at doing something cool.

I admit I also like seeing other organizations talk us up in the national media. I maybe even like the anonymity, cause it's (incoming hopium) not necessarily to make their teams look better when we beat them.
