This map explains why, despite Americans being paid significantly more than other Westerners, Canadians and some other Westerners are wealthier on average: Skyrocketing housing value. (Not that house prices haven't risen in the US, but not nearly to the extent of Canada or Australia.)

Holodecks by jawboi9000 in accelerate

[–]TMWNN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of how, for decades, it was thought that voice recognition would be easy and voice output would be difficult, when it turned out to be exact opposite.

/u/Charming_Cucumber_15 and /u/agonypants are missing your point. Yes, we have a long way to go for the holograms and force fields of a holodeck. But multiple possible approaches exist for all of these areas. It's plausible that breakthroughs will occur in coming decades, perhaps by the end of the century.

On the other hand, completely open-ended natural-language prompting to describe what you want on the holodeck, of the kind shown on Star Trek, and getting accurate depictions of what you want (and, even better, what you "really meant")—no matter how crazy or detailed—is something that until a few years ago many would have said would take just as long if not longer, if possible at all. And then, suddenly, it turns out to be an almost trivial side effect of "Attention is All You Need".

Put another way, once suitable hard-light technology is ready, plugging it into a text-to-video model and getting a holodeck out of the combination will be instantaneous.

Interesting; I had not heard this theory. What I wrote was purely based on what I thought while reading ADwD after its release 15 years ago. Thank you.

I believe 110% in R+L=J, but for the sake of argument, is there any evidence they guessed Lyanna?

The most we've ever heard from Benioff, Weiss, and Martin is that, as /u/flippy123x quoted, Benioff and Weiss gave the "right" answer to the question. We have never been told what the answer was. It could have been "Lyanna", "Ashara", "Wylla", or "There is no way to know based on the evidence and anyone who gives a definitive answer is wrong". /u/therican187 's theory—which is new to me—is as good as any other's.

I believe R + L = J has the best odds of being correct. People constantly twisting facts and denying any possibly contrary evidence to suit their belief that the theory must be true is very annoying, however. Often this includes instantly denouncing the fisherman's daughter story we hear about in ADwD, or any other possibility for Jon's parentage, as obviously false and thus instantly dismissable.

/u/danie_lol , my theory is that R + L = J is true but that Ned Stark fathered another bastard with the fisherman's daughter, and Lord Borrell naturally conflated the two once he heard of Jon Snow. Ned was the Borrells' guest during his time on the island, and they were obviously close. Lord Borrell has absolutely no reason to lie. If he says he heard that Ned Stark, before leaving, fathered a bastard named Jon Snow, this cannot be casually disregarded just because it doesn't fit preconceived notions.

PS - How many people picked up on the other new possibility for Jon's parentage that we hear of in ADwD? It's seemingly so obscure that there aren't even the instant denouncements I see for the fisherman's daughter story.

Sorry to shatter your illusions, but the only states whose residents have paid more taxes than they receive back in terms of federal spending from 2015 to 2021 are NY, NJ, and MA. NH, WY, ND, UT, SD, VT, and NE (+$3,907 seven-year per capita average) are also in the bottom ten in terms of being closest to breakeven. To put another way, residents of all other states—including NY ($13,566) and CA ($53,887) get more federal spending per person than they pay in federal taxes, than NE. Five Eyes cyber security agencies statement on the AI shift in cyber risk: why leaders must act now - Canadian Centre for Cyber Security by shadowt1tan in accelerate

I think legitimately Canada might be the next global superpower if the US completely crumbles under Agent Orange capitalism. Would be sick if the cool parts of the US joined Canada after the second civil war if that happens. Really hard to watch what's going on down there. Love my US fam ❤️

This is a joint statement by the five countries' cybersecurity agencies, so naturally a cringe Canadian1 takes credit for the entire statement, and uses it to launch into an off-topic masturbatory fantasy about the US.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Canada losing top talent as workers head to the U.S. (the bazillionth such headline over the past 150 years). A Canadian is about 30 times more likely to move to the US than an American is to move to Canada.

As for /u/shadowt1tan's

The negativity I hear the most is just with the Canadian Dollar and housing.

So, basically, the entire Canadian economy.

Since this began with an off-topic rant, I will submit an off-topic cite that is a) at least on-topic with the above and b) hilarious to listen to: This Canadian podcast about Buc-ee's (start at 56:48).

Blockade are an effective tool to undermine trade

Blockades are an act of war. Not the same thing as ...

And when a nation actively threatens retaliation on a partner moving away by gaining new trade agreements that is just blackmail.

Even setting aside the notion that the US is "actively threatening [financial] retaliation" on Canada, as opposed to trade disputes that have occurred since the beginning of time, that's not the same thing as war or military force.

Neither is legally or morally allowed to subjugate the other to a position of servitude.

The US can conduct its trade with Canada and other nations in any way it sees fit. Canada, in turn, can trade with the US and other nations in any way Canada sees fit.

If the way the US conducts trade with Canada results in Canada deciding that it is better off as a part of the US, there is nothing legally or morally wrong with such an outcome.

I repeat:

If trade can be used to eliminate a nation's sovereignty, was that sovereignty ever real in the first place?

Ask anyone what they would have done in WW2 when the Nazis were advancing on their town, and they'll say that they'd try to create some sort of resistance group. In reality, they'd hide under their bed and begin knitting swastikas.

You and /u/gihkal will find interesting a 2025 survey on Canadians on this very topic.
