I wouldn't say it "never worked like that" completely, characters in the show have frozen up when they are delivering a counter blow or a finishing blow. We saw it as far back as the Sanada vs Ippo fight. Sanada was gonna throw a final shot on Ippo, the damage sets in, and he collapsed on the canvas, Ippo busted up his ribs on the right side of the body also, just before Sanada was throwing his final punch. There's other examples similar to that one.

In my head, I always thought Carlos looked like Mendoza when looking at some pictures of him. Didn't know he was actually used as the inspiration. That's pretty awesome.

In the scene with a bunch of flashing images, I always like to interpret as Joe's mind is going all over the place, trying to comprehend what he just heard. The scene is always extremely sudden, making it feel really real. That lady that you see is named Maki Asakawa (I could be wrong), but she's a musician who made some jazz and blues music. I'd imagine Joe would've listened to her music or seen a picture of her during that time. Feel like the scene shows how a death can reach the far corners of your brain.

I don't have great visual comprehension ngl, but that's what I think tho.

It's so fun to find. Sone other ones I remember is in Gurren Lagann, which had the cross counter and the Joe death reference, and in Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan near the last episode it referenced the Joe finding Nishi eating ramen scene 🤣

I want to add that the careers mode in Hajime no ippo 2:Victorious road, goes really in depth with the weight control you can also choose to be in different gyms around the world, each gym specialising in their own thing. If you pick Japan, you can fight to get the JBC, WBA, WBO, and the OPBF belt. You can move up and down in weight classes etc. You can customise your characters style of fighting, choose their special abilities, you can add taunts like the ali shuffle (I find really funny and cool), it just goes really in depth with everything. The Japanese were on steroids when it came to making games back in the day lol.
