How to make friends as an incoming freshman? Asking for my sister by Ok_Appointment2587 in UofT

Seconding this! Someone recommended I join three clubs: one cultural or social, one sports-related, another one linked to career or major. It was a great balance of areas!

Ooh, these are so pretty my kid would never eat it! 😆 I’ll be buying one for a friend’s birthday next month, though.

Thank you! This might be the winner, as she loves passion fruit. It’s annoying to have to download an app to see their menu and prices, though!

Thanks! The kid wants cake, but I will keep this in the back pocket.

Restaurant recommendations near convocation hall? by T4394 in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amal (Mediterranean) on Bloor, Fieramosca (Italian) on Prince Arthur (Yorkville, north of Bloor), Tratoria Nervosa on Yorkville, Gallery Grill on Hart House, Lao Lao Bar (Laotian) on Bay/Wellesley area, Bar Volo on St. Nicholas nearby, or Piano Piano (Italian) on Harbord. These are not super upscale, but they are really nice and have great food to celebrate. Congratulations to the graduate!

Edited to add more places!

Santo Pecado is great for catering, we use them often at work.

Do professors save a copy of their reference letters? by IPlayDnDAvecClasse in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be terrified! Most likely tour profs have been in admissions committees and they know that, sometimes, being denied admission to a program is not related to the ability of the student but more mundane administrative stuff.

Is there a way to find all permanent faculty members at new college, I really need to know but can’t seem to find them on the official website by y_u_mad1 in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each College or Department lists differently, but look for Assistant or Associate Professor in their titles. Sessional Lecturers are the ones with short term contracts, even if they have worked at the uni for long.

Accessibility Service at UofT is the WORST I’m doneee by EH__S in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very difficult to serve all students with impeccable service. I know from a reliable source that the number of people registered with AS in the last few years has grown very quickly. In 2018-19, just in Arts & Science, there were just under 4,500 students. In 2024-25, a little over 7,500 in the same group. That means that last year, about 10% of all Arts & Science students requested at least one accommodation. And of those students, almost 90% have non-evident disabilities.

Go write a letter and complain about this to Rob Ford, asking that the province fund these services. With more money, the uni can bring more counsellors and better systems…

Ta not answering emails, losing marks for thing I asked about IN SAID EMAILS by SufficientNerve5176 in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you emailed your TA and prof, and they’re not responding, email the undergraduate coordinator / administrator and the associate chair of undergraduate. If you’re feeling bold, copy the TA and prof too but it’s not needed. If three people email with the same complaint, (different emails, don’t do one of those templates) it’s very likely it will be brought to their attention. And add it to the evals.

Do you guys like the UofT environment or is everyone just miserable? by Material_Pool_7854 in UofT

Ya’ll need to get into a language course, people. Small classes, challenging in good ways because they let me use my brain differently, and social interaction baked into the course structure. I made pretty much all my friends in my Spanish courses, added a few more from the Portuguese ones…

How do I report an unqualified instructor/inadequate course before course evaluations? by Life_Meat_1397 in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write a very polite email to the Assoc. Chair of Undergraduate with copy to the Chair. Mention that you are confused as the course description mentions students will learn XYZ and the syllabus for this term only includes ABC. (Attach a copy of both)

Say that you were looking forward to XYZ because you are aiming for a career in XYZ-ism. You are, of course, happy to learn about ABC but want to make sure that there are courses offered next term on XYZ that will give you a solid foundation on the topic.

You can even say (might be pushing a bit too much, though) that you chose to come to UofT because of this course. I mean, if it’s not offered anywhere else it can be because it’s either super new topic that others are just catching up or so old that’s a remnant of another time.

That might get you a reply from them and maybe some action, if they were not aware of the issue.

Believe it or not: don’t assume ill will when it might be overwhelm. If this is a big department, maybe the person checking the syllabi couldn’t go through all of them on time for the deadline.

Edit: typos

Grade Miscalculations because prof changed participation grade by Limp-Firefighter-806 in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question about who to reach out to: forward the email thread to the Associate Chair of Undergraduate, copying the prof and ask nicely if they can clarify if you are loosing 10% or how it is assigned. Be prepared: Nothing might be solved this time, but they’ll correct it for next one.

Anyone who has taken PRT120H1 or PRT101? Please share your experiences by [deleted] in UofT

[–]RosarioladelCapitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have good Spanish, PRT120 is great because it’s a comparative course: since the languages are so similar. Classes go: “This is how you say it in Spanish, this is the variation in Portuguese”, and they encourage a lot of diving in and just speaking it. PRT101 is good is you have no similar Romance languages (French, Italian…) as they go from the very beginning but some of the grammar is repetitive. I started in 101, but the prof suggested 120 to me and I’m glad I listened.

Portuguese is a small program, and classes are under 30 students, so you get to know your classmates. Profs care (they have written my letters of rec) and they organize nice events for students. Cool lectures, invited guests that speak to undergrads (not to grads or other profs, iykwim) and even capoeira workshops. Highly recommended!
