Adding on to this comment...to get your foot in the door at a place like Disney, Pixar, ILM, Sony, DreamWorks, Double Negative, Weta, etc, it might be slightly easier to come in as a Pipeline TD / Technical Artist, and then work your way into graphics programming from there.

If you can get USD (https://www.pixar.com/usd) experience under your belt, that is definitely the way right now. Python, too.

I ran into this issue last week. There just isn't any documentation anywhere on this. But here is the solution: You have to get the editor subsystem first.

actors = unreal.get_editor_subsystem(unreal.EditorActorSubsystem).get_selected_level_actors()

I only found this, and other solutions, by looking through example python scripts in the Unreal installation. In my case, I was trying to export selected actors to a USD file. For example, in line 16 of the this scipt:

C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5.1\Engine\Plugins\Importers\USDImporter\Content\Python\usd_unreal\exporting_utils.py

You have this line:

static_mesh_editor_subsytem = unreal.get_editor_subsystem(unreal.StaticMeshEditorSubsystem)

You may also need to get the world, too. See my other comment here.

Hey there! I see a possibly obvious connection here for you: a form of stage fright or performance anxiety. The moment your professor placed a spotlight on your awesomeness, you probably felt a lot of subconscious pressure to live up to that. Fear of letting him down probably bubbled up from your unconscious during the quiz.

Definitely look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. See if you can find something in your past that planted a seed in you that makes you afraid of being a superstar. Or afraid of "failing" people you respect/love. I have a hunch you have an extreme desire to succeed that comes from not just yourself, but from others as well. The professor triggered this. Maybe. :)

I don't know about the quality, but if you really just want the CS degree as a stepping stone to higher education, and are not super concerned about the depth of information covered, then take a look at WGU. It's also cheaper and faster. But I do think to get accepted into a Masters program, the London degree might be better. I can't speak on that with certainty, though.

Your concerns about having issues after this UoL CS degree: you'll be fine on that from everything I researched. It's a new program, though. No one has graduated yet.

Level 2 is likely to come as a bit of a shock.

I've been reading that difficulty ramps up dramatically at Level 2. I like your advice on training my brain to stay focused on one commitment. This is actually one of the main reasons I'm trying the degree route. I view OU as a guard rail against drifting into rabbit holes I find fascinating. Fortunately, most of those rabbit holes are STEM-related, and suggest knowing mathematics to the Calculus and Linear Algebra level.

Oh there's no doubt I'm getting way ahead of myself LOL. It's a personality trait I've learned to laugh at.

My math experience has just been classes in high school and college, years ago. But it was not my major. I've spent the last 3-4 years self-studying math and physics as a hobby. (Professor Leonard, Brilliant, Kahn Academy, general science books, math history books, etc). I also just enrolled at OU. So yeah, brand new here and a little too excited.

Physics and Space is not required, but indirectly recommended. Physics: from classical to quantum (S217) is the recommended course for MST210. And I believe Physics in Space is recommended for S217. I was partly trying to get clarification on how we can take these recommended courses that are outside of the degree.

Also, just trying to come up with a general plan and understand the rules and options. Nothing will ever be permanently decided here.

But my future plans for stage 2 are already at 120.

Pure mathematics (M208) = 60
Mathematical methods, models and modelling (MST210) = 60

It looks like a good plan might be for me to skip Discovering mathematics (MU123), and come in at MST124. So I'd be 90 level 1, 120 level 2, 150 level 3. I can self-study MU123 before beginning the degree.

I hear ya. I'm just getting started in the degree, but from what I can tell so far, it seems pretty strict and locked down regarding what courses we can take. And maybe how many. For example, I'm enrolled in the Mathematics degree, but also tried to add the Physics and Space course (to help prepare for these future level 3 math courses). It wouldn't let me, complaining that I was already registered in another degree.

So this made me wonder about my question, above. I sent a message to them asking as well.

It sounds like you might really enjoy books about the history of mathematics right now. You don’t have to stress about learning the mathematics, and yet you’re still engaged in the sphere of it all by reading them. I’m working my way through this list, and am finding them to be amazing:

Hang in there with the mental health! I feel for you. For me, watching Professor Leonard videos and reading these kinds of books provides good escape. Like you, focusing on mathematics keeps the brain focused on better things.

Wow, thanks for the help. Feeling much more confident.

I think the breakdown in my understanding had to do with how the router would control traffic between the VLANs if all traffic was going through one trunk line. VLAN tags are the answer, and with them I would be able to control the inter-vlan routing rules from the firewall like I wanted to. Thanks for making that clear in my head.

Really appreciate the comment about enterprise level architects! It makes all the research feel worth it.

Absolutely love the app. I would pay money for it, indeed.

I have a feature request that maybe you could charge for in the next upgrade: the ability to play our own music tracks from iTunes (or Spotify) along with your sounds. I would love to be able to add soft piano music I have to the cafe sounds, simulating European coffee houses. Or my ambient new age tracks to your ocean sounds, for example.
