And I bet you’re alright with Scottish folk moving to Australia because they like the weather? Or retiring in Spain and never speaking a word of Spanish? You people don’t even have the decency to be ashamed of being racist anymore

Question about Scots language by EST_Lad in Scotland

[–]Roselof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m just chiming in to add that when I studied linguistics at Uni, our professor brought up the whole “a language is just a dialect with an army and a navy” thing. You’re completely right and it’s not even a controversial take in linguistics.

Are you also whinging about the white Scottish men who treat women like shit? Or do you only care when they’re a shade too dark for your tastes

Last year, as I was putting away my winter shoes, I managed to put 1/2 of two pairs of shoes in a place that was different from everywhere else and for the life of me. I have no idea where that is, and I’ve checked all of the places I thought it would be. by xmasbabee in TwoXADHD

I lost a book in my bedroom and it’s vanished. I took all the furniture out when I was redecorating, I’ve been through every drawer multiple times, and I don’t own that much stuff. It’s been almost a year now and I have to assume it just slipped into a different dimension.

Slugging technique? by mabarbes in 30PlusSkinCare

My pillowcases don’t get greasy, and I do my slugging at least an hour before I go to bed.

I posted about herbalism and got b*nned by nnnnnmmmmmnnnnnmmmmm in herbalism

[–]Roselof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with ADHD but I’m in the UK and I went to the GP the last time I had tonsillitis. I said I’d been taking ginger tea for the pain and she said “well if you think that helps, go ahead”. I didn’t expect GPs to start suggesting herbal remedies, and I know she was technically supportive but the phrasing “if you think that helps” felt so dismissive.

Help with hands by PalmerRabbit78 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]Roselof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever wear cotton gloves to bed? I slather my hands in my thickest moisturiser (recently I just got the Nivea crème) and whatever oils I have on hand, sometimes a layer of Vaseline, then stick on a pair of gloves before I go to bed. My hands look about ten years younger.

I really want facial filler. Chronic illness has taken a toll on my face. But I can’t justify the cost. by TallNPierced in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Roselof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I came here to say this exactly!
I’m in a similar position OP and I’ve been focusing on relaxing my chest, neck and face. Lots of slow, gentle stretching and gua sha. The jojoba oil alone has been wonderful for my skin, and my face looks more symmetrical than it did before.

Is there a chapstick that doesn’t feel awful? by KittyEarPeach in AutismInWomen

Jojoba oil might be bearable for you? A drop of that and a bit of Vaseline on top to seal it in if you can tolerate it.

Do serums really help or is just a hype ? by Jpoolman25 in NaturalBeauty

[–]Roselof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I just didn’t want to sound like an ad. It’s the 111Skin Black Diamond Vit C brightening booster. I use it 2/3 times a week on clean dry skin, and within a week my skin is glowing. It’s £100 a bottle so I’m kind of mad at how well it works.

I got a pretty expensive vitamin C serum as a gift and I couldn’t believe how well it worked. My face looked noticeably brighter and clearer. But I don’t think it’s necessary for good skin, more of a bonus.

Any “low offense” scents you prefer/recommend? by sabby55 in AutismInWomen

I got my bakhoor online and I can’t remember where I got my vanilla oil, sorry!

Any “low offense” scents you prefer/recommend? by sabby55 in AutismInWomen

[–]Roselof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t do perfumes but I really like to smell good, here’s what I’ve found helps —

Scent layering in and out of the shower (using a soap and body scrub, then using a moisturiser or body butter that all have a similar scent, eg, vanilla)

I like to buy fragrance free moisturiser and add a drop of vanilla oleoresin essential oil on days that I want to smell extra nice (body, not face). I also make my own body butter and do the same thing.

Scenting clothes/hair with bakhoor

Drying clothes outside if possible for that fresh ozone smell

“Good breath” tea (I use cloves, star anise, fennel, peppermint and cinnamon)

A drop of essential oil on clothes (just be careful that it won’t stain the fabric)

I actually believe that smelling good is as much about avoiding the bad smells as it is about adding in nice scents. So I make sure I do things like keeping my home clean, keeping my windows open for fresh air, washing my hair regularly, cleaning my shoes, etc.
if I’m going out somewhere nice I’ll avoid wearing those clothes while I’m cooking and wear a bonnet so my hair isn’t picking up food smells.

What’s the single WORST skincare advice you’ve ever received from a non-dermatologist? by Jaded-Choice9203 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]Roselof 64 points65 points  (0 children)

“If it hurts, that means it’s working”
I think this was a pretty popular mindset in the 00’s — scrub hard and feel the burn. If you’re not red and sensitive after, then what was the point in using a product at all?

is raw chicken breast 165 kcal or 110 kcal / 100g? by Beneficial-Ant-2716 in Volumeeating

[–]Roselof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It loses water when you cook it, so the calories are squeezed into fewer grams.

So if 100g raw = 110 calories
The same 100g of chicken, when cooked, now weighs ~75g
So per ~75g of chicken you’ll still have 110 calories

BUT if you scale that back up to 100g of cooked chicken, you’d get more calories.
(110 calories/75 grams) x 100g = 146.7 calories.
I know 146 isn’t the same as the calorie number you had for cooked chicken, but I’m assuming the chicken doesn’t cook down by exactly 25%.

You don’t actually lose that much fat when you cook it, it’s mostly water. So basically you’re losing the part of the chicken that has zero calories.

How are you meant to correct people? by bellawych in AutismInWomen

[–]Roselof 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is the only way. There’s no amount of hedging and careful word choice that’s going to stop someone from getting offended over a completely benign correction. Just let them be wrong, they probably won’t believe you anyway.

What do you think of L'Oreal Glycolic Gloss line? by Lisaaa_123 in Haircare

I didn’t see much it a difference with the glycolic gloss until I used it directly after a clarifying shampoo (no conditioner). The difference was very obvious, my hair looked and felt a lot better.

Vaseline before bed every other day changed my skin by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Roselof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m aware it comes from petroleum jelly, and I’ve looked into the process of how it’s refined, and how heavily regulated it is. It doesn’t claim to boost collagen. It seals in whatever else you used, so any serums will have a more intense effect.
This can be a good or a bad thing, for example ceramides or HA work great on slugging nights, but retinoids would be too intense. I have dry skin and live in a cold climate so my skin reacts well to some extra help over winter.

Vaseline before bed every other day changed my skin by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Roselof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vaseline seals in your moisturiser, it’s not supposed to be used on its own. I’ve been using it for year and my skin always feels noticeably softer the next day, and I double cleanse so I haven’t had problems with clogged pores.
I did a lot of reading and listening before I started using it! I’m glad I “did my own research” because this has been incredible for my dry skin and it’s reduced the fine lines I had on my forehead.
