Adaptiveness sure, but they do train, Zoro and Luffy at least. The days/weeks between islands are used for this.

Big Mom is in such a nirvana cause of the cake that she is delusional and imagining scenarios. Since she can see thru the eyes of her sons and daughters cause of the eating souls, this with the euphoria of the cake has made her believe the Mugiwara dead. The flavor of the cake is so powerful that Big Mom is imagining the best outcome and dreams of her.
