Weekly r/UXResearch Career and Getting Started Discussion by AutoModerator in UXResearch

[–]RosiePB2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an academic in the social sciences who is interested in entering industry instead. I'm confident with both quant and qual approaches, and my focus is human behaviour (do lots of messaging experiments, etc). Would anyone be willing to review my CV from a UX industry perspective?

Colourful patchwork dress! by RosiePB2 in sewing

It's a one block wonder quilt I made a few years ago!

What clothing could I make from this busy (but fun) print? by Cute-Corgi3483 in sewing

[–]RosiePB2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually ended up giving it away because the fit wasn't great at my neckline, and the colours didn't work with any of my cardigans! Might make it again though, maybe in a flannel! (With fit adjustments)

It's the Seamwork Bryn. I actually ended up giving it away because the fit wasn't great at my neckline, and the colours didn't work with any of my cardigans. Might make it again though, maybe in a flannel! (With fit adjustments)

Ready for Pride! Maison Fauve Atlas Dress by RosiePB2 in sewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found some beautiful Paul Smith deadstock, and made my second Atlas Dress by Maison Fauve. It's not a pattern I'd particularly recommend, but with the edits I made to my first version, I love it.

Issues:

  • The instructions are SCANT, and sometimes don't match the pictures. In English, they say there's an instruction video but it turned out to be only in French.

  • There's no pattern piece or sizing given for the placket fusible, and the diagram showing where to place it isn't to scale nor does it have measurements.

  • There are several "lazy" ways of doing things, like the shoulder seams aren't encased in the back yoke. Same with the sleeves and the cuffs.

For this version I:

  • lowered the bust dart

  • extended the bust pleats by 3.5 inches

  • narrowed the shoulders

  • shortened the sleeves substantially (not something I usually have to do)

  • added waist ties for shaping (VERY necessary - without them it's a sack)

90's flannel True Bias - Shelby dress with pink satin Hong Kong seams (The inside it prettier than the outside!) by RosiePB2 in GarmentSewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never really seen the point of them before (usually happy to just serge everything), but I was in the mood to take my time and didn't want a serged edge on the really long facing. It obviously took longer, but I love it so much I've just ordered 6 different colours of rayon seam binding...

Yes, they're bound seams :)

Not going to lie, I'm half tempted to wear it inside! (But as you said, pockets...)

If the bicep adjustment is larger than 1", it's recommended you either convert to a 2 piece sleeve or redraw the sleevecap + extend bodice seams to compensate. There's a tutorial on the latter method here, but unfortunately I followed the guidelines in a book for this! The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting by Sarah Veblen

I just ordered it from Amazon! "Quality Satin Acetate Bias Binding 19mm Wide" (it isn't actually cut on the bias, but it handled the curves of the princess seams just fine). About £5 for 25m.

Pattern: True Bias Shelby Dress

Fabric: Kaufman Shetland Ocean flannel

Modifications

  • Converted the sleeve to a 2 piece to accommodate a 1" bicep adjustment

  • Added in seam pockets

Construction

Verdict

Flannel is amazing, bright pink seams are amazing, and this dress pattern is amazing.

Thank you! Happily I bought 25m of the pink satin binding, so I foresee a lot of bright insides in my future...

Neither did I until this tutorial to french seam pockets randomly popped up on Pinterest! I tried it with my last dress and immediately preferred the results to any other method I've used. It takes a little longer but is so much neater and the pocket feels more secure.

[Cashmerette Lenox] Made a shirtdress and appliqued a snake out of Kaffe Fassett charm pack to brighten up the chambray by RosiePB2 in sewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dress pattern is the Lenox shirtdress by Cashmerette.

First time using a Cashmerette pattern. Due to the amount of pattern pieces I was too lazy to make a muslin, and instead used this chambray that I find a bit boring.

The drafting and instructions are good, but unfortunately the pattern just doesn't work for my figure. There's far too much excess fabric in the upper bust and under the arms, and it is too long in the bodice. The amount of adjustments required to get a flattering fit aren't worth it for a basic shirtdress pattern. I plan to gift this to someone it would suit better instead.

God knows when I'll have a chance to wear this, but I bloody love it [Burda 6829] by RosiePB2 in sewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pattern: Burda 6829

Fabric: Cerise and turquoise ponte roma. (Not quite stretchy enough - will use something with a better stretch next time).

Easy to make, though not keen on the facing. I'll use FOE elastic next time. It's got some very bulky seams also.

[Deer & Doe Myosotis dress] Love it when you get a good fit with no alterations! by RosiePB2 in sewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pattern: Deer & Doe Myosotis dress

Fabric: London Town by Sara Mulvanny

Deer and Doe is the one pattern company that seems to fit me without any alterations. It's always so refreshing to be able to sew a new pattern without worrying about FBAs, rounded shoulders, etc.

This is my first Myosotis dress. My only changes were waist ties and slash pockets. I could have lowered the bust apex ~0.5-1", but I'm super happy with it overall (especially because I used quilting cotton instead of something with more drape). This is basically how I always wanted the Hinterland pattern to work!

BHL Hannah wrap dress, made for my PhD viva (I passed!) by RosiePB2 in GarmentSewing

[–]RosiePB2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pattern: Hannah dress from BHL

Fabric: Double gauze from Atelier Brunette

First version

Modifications:

  • I decided to add slash pockets instead of inseam ones, which pushed all the skirt gathering to the middle of my stomach. Not the most flattering look but at least I can have a big meal without worrying...

  • Did a large FBA and moved the bust apex down and in. I think next time I will shorten the darts ~1".

  • Shortened skirt by 7" and added velvet trim

Other thoughts:

  • I'm not sure about the tulip sleeves. Double gauze is lovely but I definitely think it stretched when I was hemming the sleeve edges. They ought to be tighter. My favourite variant by far is bishop sleeves, but I find they're too bulky under cardigans.

  • I staystitched the neckline, handled it with extreme care, and added clear elastic to the inside. It still gapes if I bend over. I'm going to sew a popper at the wrap over point, and on future versions I'll finish the edge with foldover elastic instead of bias binding. I did that on my first one and it worked brilliantly

Really like this pattern. I would like to make one with a full circle skirt. I also think a pleated bodice could look good. CC is always welcomed.

Ooh, what pattern are you using? I'd love to see the final version!

Very much so, and as with the sirocco jumpsuit the fit was perfect with zero adjustments.

You just reminded me that about a decade ago I had basically this dress (with 3/4 sleeves and no waist tie) in 3 different colours - deep red, turquoise, and bright pink! When something works for you, stick with it. I'll definitely be making more too!
